With the Western Derby result in, it seems to me that Freo are a better side than most thought. Their losses so far, to the Hawks and Adelaide are no discrace given that these 2 sides could be on top of the ladder with big wins this weekend.

Rnd 1 We beat the Demons- thats all you can ask.

Rnd 2 An honorable loss to Freo (see above) by less than 3 goals. Playing Freo at home this was a "good" result.

Rnd 3 A seven point loss to last years Premiers. Again an acceptable result.

Rnd 4 A loss to the hawks by 32 points. A big victory against the Roos this week could see them on top of the ladder. The 32 point loss flattered the Hawks who were aided by our inacuracy especially in the last quarter.

Rnd 5 We lost a scrappy match to the Tigers by only 8 points.

So what have we done after 5 rounds?:
Only won 1 match and lost 4 I hear many of you say. But we need to keep a perspective on things-
No blow out results
We could have won each match.
3 out of our 4 losses were IMO to last years premiers and 2 form sides of the competition (hwaks and Freo). The Tigers loss was our worste but was only by 8 points.

The Pies this week and they like the Hawks and Adelaide are only one win from being on top of the Ladder. Cant let that happen can We?

We are 1-4, but we're only 5-6 kicks away from being 4-1.

I'm feeling good about how our future is looking, even if it's only later this year, and next year.

As long as we beat Collingwood and Essendon*....

I think our close losses are easily misinterpreted.

We're like a midget being held at arm's length by a giant.

We can swing away, we'll get close, but we won't win. The giant is always able to control us with very little effort. Did Sydney have to work hard for their win? Hawtorn? Richmond? All of these sides played rubbish football safe in the knowledge that we would play worse football.

And we did.

I didn't leave any of those games feeling that we should have won. It was always just a case of if this and if that. Not "gee we threw that one away".

If the narrow losses are giving some of the more fragile younger guys confidence, then great. But I don't think the way we're playing at the moment is pointing to any brighter days on the horizon.

Fact is if we do get close in these games we have one absolute gamebreaker who can get us over the line. He did it in 3 consecutive games in 2004 and disguised a pretty average season as an OK one.

Fev is the only guy we have, the only one that can rip a game apart and take us from losers to winners. I still can't understand why anyone even considered trading him.

Until we develop more guys that can do this, we'll struggle to do more than snatch a few games every season.

Still, I reckon we'll have a better year than the bombers. My early tip for the spoon are going to push us for it all the way

Shuddup, Hammer, stop being so damned sensible.

And right.

Let us optimists have a little hope.....

How far away are we?

3 good midfielders, 1 ruckman and 1 reliable tall defender.

So we are 5 players away.

Is the midget actually wearing a Carlton jumper? I don't think I can cope with that.

The results since my first post are
1. loss to Pies- bad result
2. a win against Essendon*

Given the shellacking that the Pies gave the Cats our loss seems half reasonable.

If we had lost to Essendon* things would be different- but we won.

IMO we are not performing as badly as some would think.

Beggars cant be choosers............we have had one absolutely shithouse half of football for the year......that aint too bad.
But i gotta agree we are still short of talent.Get a couple of players and it can all change very quickly.Form is a fickle thing guys.

Geelong aren't short of talent, yet lost by 102 points.

Freo's colour scheme is terrible.
