Yeah, DB but everyone was over back then. I heard an interview of a Fitzroy official recently who said even THEY paid players in paper bags so work that out.

In fact, paying 120% of the cap wouldn't have been unusual up til 2002. Ahhhhhhhh those were the days, my friend :) .

I've never been on the side of censorship because I believed that people were able to convene their own disputes... guys like Synbad and verbs are capable of playing nice and adding interesting (yet heated) debate that is often (though admittedly not always) interesting to read.

But these days.... these guys are just not.

I'm sorry... I don't know what it is, but there are just a lot of tools who post on TC these days... they're not interesting, have nominal intelligence and are incapable of lifting their game to the heights of our more intelligent thinkers on the game like BV and, to a lesser extent, Dannyboy ( )

Mods, should step in and start being mercenary. if people don't like it they can F@%&#! off.

The site is worse now than its ever been... and its not because of the content... its because of the wave after wave of bad posters. Synbad might be a bit demonstrative but he can also lift his game and has real insight into teh game... which makes his compelling reading.

these guys know nothing, provide nothing, and alienate people.

I don't want to name names, but I suspect the mods know who they are..... just start pulling the trigger... and warning people and pulling posts. If they don't like it they can rack off and leave people of intellect to get to the bottom of the issues and find solutions..

thats what these sites are about.... feeling disempowered about something we love, and trying to position ourselves in the mind of the club... to consider elements and agree on good outcomes. Its about learning from people in the know (Synbad), people who are scholars of the game (BV), and people with good ideas who can articulate them in a way that doesn't insult your intelligence.

I see this site as a kind of socratic utopia...... Socrates wouldn't tolerate idiots and neither should we.

I'm not saying ban all idiots...... I'm saying the slightest infraction of decency toward our fellow man should be deleted and warnings issued.

I know where you're coming from Tyrant... thing is, this is a discussion board for everyone, not a site for selected editorials. More people posting means you're going to get more opinions... and on the law of averages we're going to get more well constructed, thought out debate... and more rubbish. There's not much we can do if people post drivel that doesn't break the rules.

As expected, there have been a lot of people sitting with knives poised for the first real blow out of the season... and that's why we've seen a lot of :garthp: over the last couple of days. We've pulled up a couple of people that have gone over the line, but short of that there's not much we can do... I don't think a moderator's job is like a school teacher, where we need to pull people up for making poorly formed arguments and rambling on etc... we're just here to stop people from calling each other names and hitting each other!

Woof get it through your head the cost of living is far greater in Sydney than it is in Melbourne- Wether sydney chooses to pay all its players that same allowance or wether they spread it over a few and others miss out does not matter because in the wash up if they paid all the extra to the better players and not to the lesser likes their quality of lesser likes would not be as good.

Sydney won the flag because they have a commited group of players all prepared to put in and a coach who is forward thinking .

Not because they paid more money to their players . You can pay then what they want but they still have to perform. According to the AFL we were paying our players over a million over the cap . Did we win any flags because of it.

We agree to disagree. I say the AFL should enforce Sydney to pay each player the same amount for the "living away allowance" otherwise the waters are muddied. Barry Hall should get the same allowance as Andrew Ericksen. I expect Barry Hall to get paid a hell of a lot more than Andrew Ericksen for playing.

That sort of response is exactly what Tyrant is talking about. It's a hell of a lot easier to post a simple one-line response in an attempt to discredit someone's argument, than it is to take a step back, realise that won't get you anywhere... take a minute to THINK, then give a detailed (preferably insightful) response adressing each issue, and posing your own. *

Remember that you're not arguing with a computer, but a person... so please give them the same amount of courtesy you would to someone you're having a drink with.

*and I hate to be picky, but a good proof read usually doesn't hurt either. Sorry, I understand everyone makes the odd mistake or two (myself included), and I'm not meaning to single out anyone in particular, but its just a pet hate of mine, and can make discussions very frustrating to read.

Hey Wolfy, just off the subject for a moment - your avatar reads Leigh Snooks - now I know Snooksy and not only did he not play a game in the navy blue - he also happens to be a filthy bombers supporter who is revelling in our misery right now.

Do what you can to erase this vermon from our site  :P

(just joking, of course)

It's a great name though!

Here's hoping we can put him in his place on Sunday afternoon...

TC is similar to Carlton at the moment. Some of the guys/gals who have been around here a while need to show leadership. New people come in and they notice what the regulars post, they set the tone. Not to dissimilar to our footy team at the moment it has no leadership.
Deep enough?

And the answer and explanation are one in the same:

BTW wolfy.... I'm not trying to dismiss "ideas".... good or bad as they may be..... I'm dismissing poor debating skills, like name calling. And personally, I'm sick of people who attribute blame to people without any consideration to fact, and never bother to quote.... case in point woof, who just claimed (I presume) that either I'm incapable of intellectual debate, or that I insult people. Like all good debaters, Im capable of being dismissive in a subtle or unsubtle way without resorting to rudeness (not for a while now anyway), and can always discuss a point evenly and intelligently. Now, woof has accused me of something without supporting the accusation.

Thats the kind of thing we should be deleting or warning about. If you can't substantiate a claim ABOUT ANOTHER POSTER, then it should be deleted and the person warned.

Fair point - I guess it will come down to how derogatory the claim is... damn, if we keep losing, we're going to have to recruit a magistrate into the Mods!!

Comparisons aside, I would say it has more to do with people failing to apply the same decorum they would if it was a conversation they were having in person. Leadership should not be relevant. We all know how to debate intelectually (thanks Ty), yet everyone still has to take it upon themselves to do so in all mediums, not just over the internet.

PS. Don't worry CK, for all intensive purposes they mean the same thing anyway. :P

So it is ok to switch rudeness on and off? I am just using what you wrote to substantiate or support the accusation.
I must of missed your post that said I am not going to be rude anymore. Do I have to go into another section to find this declaration?
I'll put mine here, I am not going to be rude anymore, the switch is off.

I like the way you're thinking, Ty.

I like the ideas which get thought up, no matter how wacky they can be sometimes. I may not like the ideas, and in some cases think they're downright stupid, but I always respect (or try and respect) the thought which was put into it in the first place.

There's been too much "Player x is shit" "Our list is the shitest (sic) in the competition" "Pagan's a has been" type threads where everyone seems to think a new thread would be soooo much better than joining in an already existing conversation, and posts where abuse is heaped on OUR team, players, coaches, everyone down to the bootstudder, with little reasoning, and no cogent argument to back up the poster's position.

P.S.: This was the kind of thing I was getting at a couple of weeks back with my "I never knew" thread, which I was soundly abused for. It's funny isn't it, that it's a perfectly valid "espression" for the trolls and abusers to have their say and vent, yet I (and Ty) can't vent back at them.

So if someone started going to church all of a sudden and spoke about God and Christianity a lot, would you assume he had converted to Christianity.... or do you need him to say to you "hey mate, I'm Christian now"

Thats a shame, woof....
