No need to be too extreme. It's basic good governance that you'd want some input into where you're putting your money. People with a spare 7 mill don't just throw it away.
One of the things that I've not heard discussed but have thought about a bit is the loss of our corporate community with the changing of the administration over the last few years. Elliott ran a pretty closed shop and whilst we had some good long term sponsors the club was never the great networking zone that other clubs, (Collingwood, Essendon*, even bloody St. Kilda) have been building over the last few years.
Due to the length of the Elliott reign and the small size of that community our club was seen as exclusive rather than inclusive and that's biting hard now that that small band of corporates have been booted and/or packed up and left. The vast majority of CFC corporates over that 20 year period were Jack's mates or ex-players with business careers. It's also the reason we've struggled so hard for quality candidates for the board.
People talk about the current board's inability to attract dollars to the club but in reality it's not all that surprising. There are the obvious groups like the Blue Suits but it's small bikkies and not exactly going to result in drawing in the big bucks long term. This board inherited a club without a genuine corporate community. It was a small group to begin with and then it was even smaller.
I'm not trying to suggest that this board's not incompetent here - there's enough evidence of that in other areas - just that I think the sort of contacts needed to pull in serious money are beyond them and there's no existing framework within the club to leverage.
If Pratt was to stump up some serious cash he'd also most likely bring in some seriously connected people to make sure that the donation wasn't just a short to medium term bandaid. That's only sensible.
What I'd like to see is any group that might be formed by such a scenario be a diverse one and not a collection of old mates.
If Pratt can organise a transition with that in mind then I'm in.
