Hammer,

I'm understand that peolpe who have money, generally have it becuase they keep a close eye on their outgoings. But the people I've mentioned would all have wealth in excess of $100 Million - except Valmorbidda. I don't know where he stands. He wasn't in last years BRW. $7 million to Pratt would be a piss in the ocean literally. And in answer to your question.... If I had the money, would I donate it. Yes I would. Purely becuase I had the money and I have enough love for the club. Lets not forget that it was also be tax deductable.

I'm no tax accountant but I doubt it would be tax deductible.

Even if I had a billion dollars, I wouldn't give away a million of it without being convinced it was going to be used appropriately.

"Oh, they can afford it" is not a compelling argument for me.

I am - it's not.

Did I tell you about an exciting tax audit I was involved in circa 1977? Plus yesterday for mothers day I gave my mother (a retired accountant) my 2005 Master Tax Guide. We then had a jolly afternoon quizzing each other on what is deductible and what's not.

Ta ta

PS 3 votes to BH for being about the only non-accountant to spell "deductible" correctly - you can have my 2006 Master Tax Guide when I've finished with it.

The money is not the issue here for someone like Pratt...

I think what is the problem is that if he were to donate say ten million dollars to the club, People would look at us as a club that had to be helped because we weren't good enough to help ourselves. I don't think that sits well with a wise experienced head like Pratt.

If we were about to close up shop cause all other avenues had been exhausted, then you would see donationS...The club will never fold.

This is the same reason Collins did not go to the AFL for assistance i believe.

Is Elliot a realistic chance of ever being on the board again?? -No
Does Elliot still weild alot of power around the club? - Yes.

Could we ever return to the Elliot style negligence? -Yes

But that can happen if we just allow it to happen. Not necessarily because of elliots people.

In actual fact i dont give a @#$%&! which faction fixes the mess as long as its fixed.

I do take exception when Elliots name is constantly brought up like the Boogey man. He isnt going to run... he may back some candaidates up the track.. but that wont mean they wont have their own style and bring positive things to the table..

Elliot was ok for 10 years too...

The ancient Athenians had democracy right when they had terms for leadership.. after your term was done you had to hit the road.. no matter how popular you were...

It just leads to complacency / apathy and finally a crumbling of everything.

You need fresh blood...fresh ideas... you need young vibrant people coming through all the time.. much like a footy playing list.

No not the Americans because the Americans are kind of reincarnated oil genome from their parents.....

Really living on the edge there womack...

I'm no tax accountant but what would be stopping the donation being made as a one off sponsorship from Visy or some collection of Pratt related organisations and then being written up as an advertising expense and thus tax deductible?

Maybe we could be the Carlton Pratts for a year...? :-D

Rhymes with what Elliot's book is...

BTW - as to why Sam Newman would be touting Elliot, they are good mates... I always remember the day that Elliot came back to Princes Park to see the Brisbane v Carlton game in 2003, and was given a massive boo from everyone nearby... Sam Newman said it was a disgrace that he wasn't welcomed back to the club after what he'd given them... I was more pissed off with that horseshit statement than I was with getting done after being 40 points up in the 2nd quarter!!

Well that answers that question. I assumed that Sam actually knew something that I didn't. Honest mistake. I remember that game by the way. I was devestated as well. For what its worth I didn't boo him. I was pretty dissapointed with the way everyone reacted as well.

I have just read in The Age that Dick Pratt is now worth $5.2 BILLION, now as I am not great at maths does this mean if he was to donate 1% of his wealth to Carlton that it would be 52 Million? - I have run out of space on my calculator! If this is correct even 1/2 a percent would be great.
Any help on this one?
