From what I know about Whitnall and what I've seen in season 2006, Lance will have a good season in 2006 at 27 years of age. If that's the case, then I would suggest that he'll do it in 2007 at 28, continuing that form.

After that I would have to consider that possibility that the reason for his 'elite form' of 2006 and 2007 was that this was his peak as a mature player, and it's most likely all down hill from there. I suspect that at 29 in 2008 (when his contract expires) is when the gap between his pace and his footy smarts would become unbearable to watch.

So he would be good for a team that requires one year from him to fill a void for a flag.

WCE
Adel
Coll
Swans

Saints have got enough talls when all fit so WCE same, Adel maybe FP, Coll are right for talls, Swans maybe BP or FP.

Whilst I couldn't see any of them doing it but the best we could get from them would be picks,13,14,15,16,(in a superdraft a round 1 sselection would be frowned upon) and 28,29,30,31 in the second round. There's no Top 20 there.

So if we could trade him for a Top 20 we'd be mad not to. If we can't strike a deal (and that's the most likely scenario IMO), he'll still be of value if he retires gracefully at the end of his contract and help out with the strategy side of coaching. That would be a win for us given the young kids have seen him at his best, experienced his smarts and are close to him.

Worth a try. Win win either way. But it aint gunna happen.

At the end of 2008 alot of contracts expire. Whitnall might step up and become captain coach of the Bullants. Mitchell might step up. That's one more reason for Pagan to trade him.

2 year contracts are a good way to motivate players. If the club keeps Lance they must never stray from offering him maximum 2 year contracts.

You cant have it both ways Synbad you tell people not to entertain the thought of Trading Lance at round 7 without seeing what the rest of the season brings well vice versa you cant predict that he should be traded come season end if he continues his output and Leadership

LEadership is a big issue in the Blues even you acknowledge it Synbad and If Lance really wants to be there and puts in and passes on his knowledge to the other players thats worth a hell of a lot in a young developing team. Young kids regardless of the degree of talent even the very talented need players to look up to and to lift them or advise where to position themselves ...

Its highly unlikely we will get a top 20 pick and i know you would trade Lance for even a top 50 pick if offered .... but wait until the season unfolds..

Agreed with Bondi show me one player in the team that has been consistant in the Blues for the past 4 years
Thornton, Lappin, French, Kouta havnt been
Stevo has been mostly but also mising sometimes
Houla and scotland have even been omitted at various stages
In fact i could go through the list and find most players have not been able to show much consistancy over the last 4 years had they we would have won a lot more matches...

Fev and been rapped with him this year but he has had very poor patches in years ... okay he was injured well using that argument so was Lance.

i am not saying he wont be traded if soemthing so good is on offer but if he performs as he has over this last year and can provide value to the club for the next 2-3 years as our kids and mid range players develope then he will be aof great value.

But agin using the logic we should judge everything later in the year we cant trade Lance at round 7 ... he is contracted ... and leading player in 2006

All i think is with the Blues have been over the last 4 seasons ... i am sure the majority of all Blues Supporters / members will find some joy in some Team success / Competative spirit / Fev Leadig Coleman / A Blues player performing exceptionally in the competition / A possible Rising star in Murph / Potential emrging from Kenendy.
All these factors are desperately what Blues fans need after being kicked in guts over the last 4 years.
ss
ALso i think people are tired of seeing players given negative postings every single week even worse is the negativity when they are performing so well. Gice him a break enjoy the season and if we get some wins and success enjoy them Synbad .... i know i do after the last 4 years.. Also though you may think the only hope in the club is Super Draft picks .. you obviously are undervaluing some of the potential talent on the list which i believe the potential ones are slowly starting to show things..
Not all players will be retained some will be traded as normal some will be delisted .. some will be give another chance ... there will be yje natural refreshment of the list as always..

One last point of course we want to get as numch talent in the draft but also remember there are players who still are new and are developing who will also hopefully add to the 2007 squad more consistantly in the next couple of years.

Finished third last year, should go top two this year. That'd make two consequtive good years. 2004 was a problem because he had a bruised bone in his foot and could hardly run. The year before, Martyn took him out at training didn't he?

But yeah, he's having another great season and playing some of his best footy.

His last month last year, when he went into defence, was excellent. No-one rated it because we were stuck in the mentality of Whithnall the forward. I reckon that month bumped him into the top three.

Is he more Carlton through and through than any of them???

at the end of the day its about whats best for the long term future of the Carlton football club...!!!

I repeat... just because he has had a very good season so far this year .. (but been crap for FOUR YEARS) does not make him un untouchable unless we have no clue what were doing.

Tell me where he will play in 2008.. 9which is when his current contract expires) just at a guess....

Where do you envisage Lance will be playing.... ??

Keep in mind we have a few defenders that are kids in the ressies. (Hartlett Bower Flint and Edwards) there are more kids being drafted this year and alot of people think Hansen would be great...) AND... we have T Bird too..

There is no room in the forward line....
We have kids to develop for the defence....

So in TWO years aged 29 what is Lance going to do???

Lets play the reality planning game and not a game of Utopia....

The truth is we should have kids pushing for defensive posts...
We have a good developing forward line...

We need midfielders...

And we need more talent to add to that young group that should be maturing in 4 years together....

If were improving as a team....what will be Lances role in that projection?

Read before ranting Synbad.... I said I agree with all of that but I dont think the Club will do it for other reasons.

I think Lance will be kept and will play in defence. Hartlett won't make it and Edwards hasn't been seen yet to assess.

If Lance is going to play at a similar level to this for the next 3-4 or however many years well I want him in my side and then it can be up to the younger blokes underneath him to dislodge him!

But you start your post with "If..."

Isnt that the trouble????

Its not like a Murohy post or a Walker... theyre more along the lines of...

"Let others dislodge them over the next 10 years if the others are good enough....."

Perhaps it's the number of posts you'd made slagging off at Whitnall. Geez you waste a lot of your life!

All of this entire discussion is "If".

It's all speculative.

In 2000, Kouta was the best player in the AFL. If we'd have known his knees would fall apart we would have traded him.

What are you trying to say there Molsey about Hartlett - I've never seen him play and your suggesting he wont make it ???? Why is this ???do others think the same and if so really throughs a question mark over the recruiting and drafting that year and completely blows the wind up the arse of those suggesting we trade Lance for picks. If your correct.

Will Hartlett make it
