Big problem with this system is historically there hasn't been a huge amount of talent to come out of NSW/ACT, so the clubs could be gobbling it all up prior to the draft. :P

Would have been nice to have Lenny Hayes in a blue shirt yesterday!!!

I mean huge in numbers. :D

There's been some huge talents to come across, but not a huge output by the region as a whole.

There was a pretty reasonable player named Mark Maclure who was recruited from East Sydney; and went on to play in 3 Premierships.

Wanna know how many players who played for NSW/ACT got drafted onto a senior list last year?

One.

Year before? None. Year before that? One.

Sure there's been some talented players over the years, but as of right now you're very hard pressed to dig up multiple quality players from the NSW/ACT area year to year. That's why this scheme is in place - to get young athletes involved because there are now advantages. That's why I was a bit perplexed with people getting antsy about us not using this straight away.

Great to see the club being proactive with someone that is obviously below all of radars at the moment.

Great to see a thread that can bring out the humour in Carlton fans.

Maclure is the only one that I can think of that came from the Sydney Metro area. The others came from regional areas with a reasonable AFL presence.

Ill be interested to see how many of these kids that are recruited from the Sydney Metro area actually make it. The competition up here is second rate and has the added disadvantage of being run by fools.

The only positive that I can see in this is for the kids to actually have a chance to learn from a AFL club about what will be required of them if they do make it.

"NEWS

MELBOURNEfc Announce NSW Scholarship Player

MELBOURNEfc are delighted to announce that Teddy Strudwick will join the Melbourne Football Club under the new NSW Scholarship initiative.

Teddy is from Lane Cove and has played his junior football with the Willoughby Wildcats and the Northshore Hawks. He is 183cm in height.

MELBOURNEfc's General Manager, Recruiting and List Management, Craig Cameron said, "Teddy has played AFL football from a very young age, and has developed good football skills. He possesses excellent endurance and is a smart player and a good athlete. We've done well to secure Teddy under the new scholarship initiative and we'll be able to develop his football over the next three years."

As part of the scholarship, Teddy will frequent Melbourne on several occasions for training and development. The scholarship program will enable MELBOURNEfc to have preference over other clubs during the draft period in which Teddy reaches an eligible age.

MELBOURNEfc has also appointed Daniel Kenny as the NSW Talent Identification and Development Coach. Daniel is a coach at Pennant Hills, and is also the Sydney Under 15 Talented Player Program Coach. Daniel has officially joined the MELBOURNEfc development team."

Funny how we have picked a kid up from Penno yet Melbourne overlooked him even with a guy they have employed working at the club.

But grew up in Perth I believe - so may have learnt a lot of his football there rather than in Sydney.

is it possible we've been hiding him so well that his own club don't know about him???
