I HAVE THE SHELL, LET ME SPEAK!

Sorry, forgot what I was going to say... oh yeah, Barass you are whipping up a one-man storm. :)

Bonus point for anyone who picks the book reference.

Ring-a-ding-ding steve, classic novel.

Notice any similarities in this thread? ;)

And there I was thinking that it was a conch, not a shell.

One in the same, in this case. :)

Best to ensure your literary references are correct. Takes away from the intended effect a tad.

Caffeine would have helped if you want me to go verbatim. :P

It's correct in a general sense, I can even depict the scene for you if you like. :D

Anywho, a conch is a type of mollusc that lives in that type of shell, but a typical shell used by said mollusc tends to be labelled a conch as well.

Move along now... :P

"Ralph smiled and held up the conch for silence". Let's be blunt - you should have written "I have the conch, let me speak". It doesn't matter that a conch is a type of shell - that is not what Golding wrote. Literary allusions that are a bit off are similar to using big words in a way that is not quite right. Particularly when you ask everyone if they can identify the reference.

Here we have 2 quotes that mean exactly the same thing: "I'll be back", and "I shall return".

I trust you wouldn't attribute the former to General MacArthur when he left the Phillipines or the latter to the Terminator when he left the police station.

Why don't you just say oops and move on :P

ahh... see... SOS.... with jimmae, you have to ASSUME he's misquoting someone and not producing his own opinion. Thats what we, his avid readers, have grown to learn...... he doesn't like to share his sources, paraphrased and misused though they might be

It's also best to pick a book that isn't on the majority of high school reading lists :)

Touche, shows how long since I've sat down and had a good page turner.

Last one probably would have been Jurassic Park in 1993, the original novel I mean not that shit trapsed around when they released the movie.
