Story in the papers today about Gibbs and Sellar [another likely top pick in the draft] meeting the Blues in Adelaide last week.

I wasn't aware that Sticks and Gibbs's Dad were team mates at Glenelg. Not sure if it will mean we get him and still avoid the spoon, AGAIN!

Nice to see that the club is already planning ahead after only 9 rounds of footy.

Question for DOA, if you happen to view this thread.

How important these days is it for parents/prospective players to do these types of meet and greets with AFL clubs given that really you have no say in where your boy is going to end up (unless of course there is a father/son rule involved).

Just wondering.

Not DOA but they are pretty important according to recruiting managers. Obviously with players like Gibbs, he is so talented you wouldnt let him go but if you have a few players that you rate equally, the attitude of the parents esp for interstate players is important. Values at home, strength of family values and the pull of "homesickness" are all important considerations on a kid that will cost the club hundreds of thousands in wages and resources
The old hawks recruiter talked about meeting the parents of a Perth kid and asked the dad what would the families attitude be to their son playing for the Dawks. The dad replied "730 days to go, 729 days to go..". Not surprisingly he didnt get picked up by a Melb team

Oooh Oooh, Mr Demetrispew, Draft tampering, draft tampering, systemic rorting of the AFL rules they must be punished, must be punished very severly, the sanctity of the AFL Drafting Rules must be preserved at all costs.

Wouldn't it be great if we had the priority pick - we could draft both Gibbs and Sellar :?: :?:

Had one too many crackers there have we? Or do actually fancy the idea of having an average playing list for the next 5 years?

From watching both Gibbs & Sellar play regularly for Glenelg, either would be outstanding draft picks for us. Both would be AFL ready for 2007, with Gibbs slightly taller than Murphy but a similar build and Sellar similar in stature to S. Kernahan when he first arrived at Carlton.

Unfortunately, with the way the draft and PP's are this year, we will only get the chance to grab one of them (thats if/when we finish last?) for I predict both will go in the top 5.

My preference at this point would be to take Sellar. Very similar type to Josh Fraser - a ready made Ruckman/Forward option.

One must admit though, that Sticks and Gibbs' father are close friends still from playing together at Glenelg. The Kernahan Dynasty is still very strong at the Bays - make no mistake. This would surely give us an inside running with Gibbs.

Either way, both would be winners for us!!!

Am I missing something here - the only thing that will give us the inside running on Gibbs is finishing last on the AFL Ladder and not having Stephen Orally on our list.

Yes, agreed. However the kid is very keen to stay in Adelaide, hence why the Crows tried so hard to get him under the F/S. What we don't want is for a talent of either Gibbs or Sellar leaving us after their 2 year initial contract. Having Kernahan to assist here is imperative

I don't think there's any chance we won't finish last.

I am a bit lost with this whole Gibbs debate.

For starters he will play anywhere. Maybe a small chance he wants toi return home after 2 years but pretty small. Even if he does you get compensation. The kid is a stand up person and so is his dad. They wont do the wrong with a club.

Neither will Adelaide if they wanted him back. They would pay a reasonable price.

But thats if he wanted to go home and I am not sure he would.

As for us talking to him and Sellar. Well we will talk to everyone many many times. Just it is being highlighted. Does not mean we are going to take anyone. Just being thorough and covering all bases and getting to know a kid over a length of time.

I also dont see this very likely to go at 1 scenario that journalists keep bringing up. To me Gumbleton and Sellar would be my early favs for that.
My preference is for Hansen. Gibbs in there as well to make it 4.

So thats a 25% chance around about plus Thorp and others just a notch below who after the U18s might well flop or join them in that group.

Its just Gibbs is a mid like Godard, Hidge, Ball, Deledio, Cooney, Murphy and thats all the talk. But we have talls the talent level (at the same time) of Riewoldt and Kossy to also contend with. Not decent talls but gun quality ones.

Now maybe they flop at the U18s and Gibbs wins the Larke medal and is clear number 1 after bloitzing after the U18s. Then Sellar plays Reserves and Gumbleton and Hansen gets injured.

Now if all that happned I would belive the hype. But at the moment that is not even close to the situation. Most people who watch Glenelg a lot think Sellar is at least on par with Gibbs. Hansen leads the TAC in contested marking (from 6 games) despite playing half of his football this year in the bacline.
Over 4 CMs a game. Plays ruck and CHF as well. 195cms of pure versatility.

Then throw in Gumbleton who has played every single game this year in the seniors in the WAFL and is a gun.

Anyone who gets to watch them last year and this year would be wondering who to pick. Its just the journalists who dont watch any of them and get to ask Kevin (he is a gun) Sheehan what he thinks is spurting out waffle after waffle that should be dismissed.

Watch Gibbs on tv on ABC2 ina couple of weeks. Watch his skill and 'step" to evade. Watch his class. Also watch how he does not run away from players and break games open like Judd. Then come back to me and you will also quite likely be of the same opinion as me.
Great prospect but certainally not a clear number 1.

Then watch Sellar in the same game and Gumbleon who will be on tv soon.

Then get to the U18s and be even more confused when another 10 kids look like guns.

Remeber if you watch Gibbs or Gumby on tv and they have a quiet game (if they do) it can happen and try and not judge them to harshly. Just look for a few classy signs and how they move and that will give you an idea.
