k -well ignoring current selection policy then

deluca/bryan - at least 1 (bearing in mind deluca contracted) though would be prepared to offload both
chambers
at least one and possibly both - longmuir/davies
bannister/mcgrath/sporn/wiggins - probably 2 of - at this stage would look to be sporn/bannister
teague (think he is ocntracted though)
koutafides

so thats a min 7 changes and up to 9 if both players from the deluca/bryan and davies/longmuir group go

trades - I'd be open to trading most players for the right price though the only one I would seek would probably be stevens for collingwoods 1st pick if possible.

Also - if hartlett still has injury problems then the preference would be to move hartlett to the rookie list though that will depend on feasibility and what players are left over from the draft

Ok this seems too hard for some people t0 comprehend so let me join the dots for you....

.... ..... ok.. when Denis arrived he sacked 7 players was it??... maybe more.. and since then how many players has Denis delisted.. how many have been on our lists since he has arrived.. and how many are long term players on our list today..

Youll probably find he has delisted more than forty.. we can probably lose another 20.. (some because they were old fair enough)... there are about 10 maybes and about 10 long term players on the list....

We have had around 80 players with ten long term players ...

Not many of those have taken any real steps in the elite dept either...

My point is Denis isnt developing but is just chopping player after player...

Surely there should be some real development with some players in four years????

No????

Yes???

And why dont we take a look at who Adelaide have bought in with picks similar to ours since Denis arrived and the salary cap penalties...

And dont feed me its the recruiters and not Denis....

Denis had a duty to develop.... he just hasnt done it...

Synbad, own up. Are you on the CFC payroll (i.e are you part of the recruitment team)???? Why do you only blame Pagan - someone like adelaide have identified talent that CAN be developed. We haven't. Simple.

Livo - if Smith deemed good enough.
French - if one of Aisake or Batson deemed required.

and I'd look to see if I could make a major trade - either Lance or Stevo (but only for a great price - say two high picks)

Promote Batson or Aisake (if Batson required Aisake does another rookie year, if neither keep Aisake as rookie and keep French) Flint, Smith (see Livo)

gives us 6 picks. 5 in draft and 1 in pre season (plus two more if we find a bunny). and 4 rookie picks.

Don't think this will happen though because of contracts, player goodwill etc.

I would expect Russell, Kennedy, Flint, Aisake/Batson (even if the young ruckman does not set the world on fire), Wiggins, Betts and Hartlett to be regulars

Bower, Edwards, Raso, Blackwell
to be in and out for the year.

Ok and whatabout the players he has chopped since his arrival???

Were not developing....

And Barass..... are you Denis' wife?

... nope you couldnt be... barass sacked Denis twice... but Denis still went elsewhere to forge a career playing footy as a back pocket.. even played a game for Victoria...

Someone else developed him....

If you admit you're Wayne Hughes' mistress, then maybe, just maybe.

Hegarty, you took the words right out of my mouth.

I noted in another thread that until we can prove that we CAN actually develop players, I will have nothing but sympathy for players like Sporn, Davies, Wiggins, Livo, Pendergast etc. IMO, the club AND Pagan are miles behind in this area.

What is really frustrating is that there appears to be no real plan for these guys. Is Sporn a forward, defender, midfielder, wingmen, tagger? Who the f**k would know because he's never been tried in any one position for an extended period of time and assured that the position is his. Last week Sporn earns a spot in the side through good form in the Bullants as a ‘ball winning’ midfielder… he is elevated and gets 20 minutes running on and off the ground, most likely to be dropped this week. The club does not seem to know what they want from him… same with Wiggins, same with Davies. Is Prenda a KP, ruck or ruck-rover or does he just get to run with the mobile big men. When these blokes do get the 'opportunity' their biggest fear is not the opposition, it's the runner!

The few players who have actually made marked progress such as Walker and possibly Houlihan were given specific roles and assumedly assurances of game time and consecutive matches. Livo was persisted with (out of necessity) and started to improve... what did we do? Drafted Martyn. Again last year he got a good go at full back, did nothing wrong until we played the Bulldogs where there was supposedly no match-up. F**ked him for the season.

Simpson, Bentick, Carrazzo, Betts etc. played there best footy when allowed to settle into a role. Many are still spending too much time in and out of the team, on and off the bench and in a host of different positions.

Maybe the could have made it, or maybe they ARE hacks, but the club needs to decide if they are part of the future as players or horses on the selection table carrousel and act accordingly.

100% spot on Knackers. Excellent post.

Danny... I find your argument on page 2 interesting. You're talking about too much black and white argument going on, but then you pick up on Wiggins saying he developed in the VFL and want to use that as evidence for some good work from Pagan.... ie you're taking a grey and recasting it into black and white

Do you expect Wiggo to say "Im learning a lot in the VFL, but if I'd played 20 more AFL games I might be a 20% better player.."????

Who knows what Wiggo would be like now if he'd played 20-40 more games by now?

Who knows? Its all grey.

Thats why I find your pat on the back for Pagan for Wiggo's extended run in the 2's a bit confusing, given your staunch anti-black-and-white post.

:?

"Development" is a multifaceted practice. Its never black and white.... you just couldn't model "development" into a mathematical equation without any margin for error..... its impossible.

Where our arguments (like, the Knackers one I just commended) lie is comparing the "development" work going on with the list against alternative scenarios. And the more you do that, the more it SEEMS like whats happening to our young players is not the best strategy available to us. "SEEMS" = a reading of the shades of grey.

The appearance of the disparity between the Pagan case and other possible scenarios is so compelling that many of us, like me, are utterly convinced that the Pagan strategy is a poor one. For every so-called "success story", you have to wonder "well, how would Wiggo be going now if he'd played more 2s games", and "how much would Russell be learning if he was playing seniors", and "how is it beneficial for a Kennedy to get arse splinters and then get dropped? what is he learning from this?"

So, I think Danny that its all well and good to say that we are frustratingly black and white, but I ask you to think about perhaps taking your black and white glasses off when you read some of these posts.... or try not to be a victim of your own criticism (ie Wiggo)

Then you T miss my point entirely.

The point is not - is Denis developing our young players well?

or better still

is Denis developing our players as well comparatively?

What irks me is the argument that is gathering with more and more bullshit each day

Denis is incapable of developing anyone.

or worse still

Denis harms development of all players.

Is it these two arguments that are both horribly back and white, that sicken me.

I think Denis has a philosophy of development. He plays them, drops them, waits for them to play well for a sustained period plays them again...etc

I worry that this strategy is not the best one just as I worried about Parkin's idea that it was best to attract mature bodies rather than kids.

In both cases (and this has consistently been my point T) they did/do/are/have developed teams and won premierships (something the majority of coaches have been incapable of - yes other circumstances, still they both did, and both more than once) which means their ideas work.

Are they ideal methods? - I fear not. I fear in fact that at their core is an old culture that needs to change.

Are they non methods or destructive methods? No more than any method has a destructive side, no more than any method does not work for everyone.

But to take a player like Wiggo who you brought up, not me, as proof that Denis was not developing, who now seems to be playing well and says himself that playing in the AFL as a kid did not suit him, seems to me to raise an interesting question - that being that perhaps you and I, though we know our fields very well, do not know about developing footballers at all well. What Wiggins seems to be saying (to me I admit) is that playing kids for kids sake is not neccessarily a contructive development strategy but may (just like some of Denis's ideas) be destructive.

dear Speakers - answer my question first - seeing as your question was asked in response to my question rather than answering my question as you now bleat on about me not answering yours 8)

so any player who is better its because they made themselves better/Mitchel/time/etc... any player not better is Pagan's fault - is that the gist of your argument?

The gist of my arguement Dannyboy is that Denis Pagan hasn't developed any of our young players, other than Fevola. Pretty straight forward really, sorry if this confuses you. You seem to write a lot Dannyboy without actually getting anywhere.

I haven't read the whole thread and this might have been addressed but what about someone like Simon Wiggins though? He's played well since he's come back into the side. If he can now cement his spot in the side and become a handy to good player how much of the credit does Denis get? Or is it just a player finding his feet finally having been around for 5 years in the AFL system?
