The team picked for this weeks game against Port is a disgrace

It is obvious to me that we think we have a chance against a team who isnt travelling that well and mature bodies will prevail over youth. What must the selectors be thinking when they select a side on a Thursday arvo.


Pagan is trying to limit the damage .There is much innuendo and rumour in footy. You dont know whether to believe or not believe certain stories.Yesterday a mate from work was telling me a few reasons why the cattery isnt a good place to be at the moment.You have to take everything people say to you with a laugh on your face.

After collecting the Herald-Sun this morning and seeing Sporn and Longmuir in the team it really has me upset with the club and the way things are obviously going on down there.

I dont want to re-invent the wheel as much posting has been made by other members of Talking Carlton about where the club is heading at the moment.

I want to add that for the first time in my life that I half dont want to go to the footy tomorrow. Whats the point in going.The future aint out there and it's as obvious as the snoz on our faces that people's own selfish priorities have taken a precedent over the club's future onfield development as a whole .When that happens any team sporting club has reached near ultimate low levels.


We have the right to state our case over the so-called experts.We pay our memberships , turn up , drive vast distances to watch are beluvid Blues go through the hoops.What must Kennedy ,Blackwell and Russell be thinking.Why with Waite and Fisher out would you not play Kennedy.What line of thinking do the selectors have in picking Teague over Russell on a fast Telstra Dome surface.How many of us believe Blackwell deserves a 3rd game over Sporn.

Not only have Pagan and his cohorts picked a side that will limit the damage .They have picked a side that doesnt suit the ground or the opposition.Our brilliant selection committe think we are still playing at Princes Park in the late Seventies.Port may be down the bottom with us ,but they still have pace to burn with the likes of Burgoyne and Pearce who will cut us up tomorrow unless they break a leg or something along those lines.

I wont keep going on except to say that I hope to some extent we win .If that feeling leaves ya then its time to do something else on the weekends.but I also hope we get pumped to prove to the idiots who selected this squad that the obvious is the flower obvious.That is if you cant run in this modern game you are [REDACTED] unless you are a special talent(Williams,Whitnall) and the kids are the future.

A poster made an excellent point recently about the standard of the VFL and the increasing difference in the standard of the VFL against the AFL.Teague and Sporn are perfect examples of this .Star and splutter.The best way for our kids to develop is play'em as much as possible in the best comp.Sure if they struggle demote them back to the ants to find the pill. The fact is we arn't giving our young players enough opportunity to play at this level because people want to keep their jobs.

We dont play in Melbourne until the 23rd June so I will be there with a feeling of ambivalence for the first time about how the Blues play.

That's what 5 years of frustration does to you.

The side was picked before Thursday....

Either theyre super confident with the side...or didnt take long enough to think it through on a day im expecting we get under 15k for the game.

Im happy playing duds and losing. We will reap the rewards in the end. Also, I think it is good for the young guys to get back into the winning culture at the Bullants. From Wiggins interview this week it seems that it is not necessarily the best experience for a kid to play in a losing side too long.

Guessing Essendon* might get him if he goes no.1. They're worse than us!

I'm happier winning, teaches the kids alot more blending into a good side. What's the point of the game otherwise. you may as well be watching professional wrestling. Making the finals every year has never affected the Swans. You learn to develop prooperly what you have if you coaching staff is good enough. Any top 10 pick shoud be ok if your coaching staff is adept. Only believe in losing when there's only a couple of games to go and a PP is on the line.

I understand why everyone is pissed of with the selection, but can anyone say that Kennedy deserves to be in the seniors this week?

He’s had 4 kicks in 2 games. He hasn’t been playing well and that’s why he has been dropped simple as that.

If De Luca had 4 kicks in 2 games people would be calling for his head.

Kennedy is young and inconsistent. If he hasn’t played well for a few weeks he doesn’t deserve to play in the 1sts. IM NOT KNOCKING HIM but I think we should be rewarding players in form players not just keeping players in there because we like them.

Look on the bright side Kennedy will become hungrier to get back in the Carlton line up; he will play a full game for the Bullants, hopefully take a few marks and kick a few goals, gain some confidence and push for selection next week.

It's hugely annoying that the club doesn't seem either able or willing to present an easily understood vision to its supporter base. What exactly is the plan for this year? Aside from trying our best in every game, what does the club hope to achieve?

Why are we playing Longmuir and Teague; players we know won't be there in a year or two? Is it to 'protect' the kids we DO play? Minimise our losses? Reward them? Or do we genuinely think they're a chance to play with Carlton for the next 5 years?

I honestly don't have a clue. Why don't we play Blackers in the firsts and let him learn from playing on genuinely good players, not VFL hacks? Same with Kennedy. And Russell.

Here's a top 10 pick from 18 months ago who can't get a spot in the worst onball rotation in the AFL. Why not?

What I do know is that Pagan doesn't trust kids in this game, and never has really. Some coaches do, but he doesn't. Unfortunately for Pagan, the days of hard as rock honest toilers creating the backbone of your side are long gone. These poor bastards have little place anymore in our game (a shame, but that's not the point).

Teague on halfback or Russell... If the club can give us one reason why they'd do this other than to take some heat off the coaching staff by trying to reduce a 12 goal defeat to an 8 goal defeat, at the expense of long term development, then I'd be happy to hear it.

And this is the heart of the problem. As much as anything its lack of letting us know what is happening which leads people to fear very little is happening or things are happening that are wrong.

Does Pagan not trust kids.

I would have made the exact same statement about Parkin.

Have we repeated ourselves as a club? The exact problem we needed to face remaining unfaced?

We do not know because no one gives any indication of what is being done.

And just on this, was watching Chris Bond on white line fever last night and I thought @#$%&! I wish we had someone who could communicate as clearly as he does what is happening. Even some of our tactics that he understood he put in such a clear way as to make them seem reasonable. In the end that would suffice, some reasonableness. Its certainly better than darkness. Doesn't mean I want Chris to coach us but if we do make a change (and I think its becomng alomst inevitable) can we get someone who is an excellent communicater with the press.

Nah. Collingwood tanked last year and it was plain for all to see... ie, they had a plan and the entire football world knew it. This is just haphazard stuff.

That's because we have a president who says 'youth policy', a coach who doesn't really believe in having one, and a situation where no-one is really sure just whose opinion counts most.

It's pretty distressing stuff

Pagan wasnt popular at North with many younger players and didnt have faith in them and many of them were happy to seem him leave.....Wayne Carey's approval was also important..if Carey liked a youngster he got games.
Denis was often distant with many of the younger North players and let others communicate his thoughts too them...he wasnt hands on enough.
I'm not sure of how he operates at Carlton so I cant criticise him and I guess Fevola is one young player who has improved under him bit I dont see how Smorgans youth policy is being adhered to when Teague is preferred over Russell and Prenda over Kennedy etc.

I would rather reward potential than form in some cases.....to me Kennedy will learn more playing seniors than playing kids from the burbs in the Bullants...I think Collingwood got it right with Thomas.....they gave him a decent set of games before resting him...I think we have been hasty and Pagan is more interested in the win/loss ratio than development..

yeah i agree that now that kennedy has a taste for afl football he'll want more and because he hasnt beenn performinghe needs to go back to the 2's and gain some confidence.

BUT, i've said this before if your going to drop a player who is 18 years old why bring in a player who is in his mid 20's and has no future with the club beyond this year (longmuir)

if your going to bring someone in for the forward line maybe we should just give de luca or livingston a few chances up there while they are still young and if they fail to perform then we get a good idea of how good they really are nd we can trade or delist them if they're not playing well we could always throw whitnall in the forward line as well because thornton always gets tredrea (and beats him) and for damon white we could have whitnall start on him and if livo doesnt perform they can switch and whitnall can go forward.

instead of teague it would have been good to bring russell back into the side. he has got up to 15 years more at our club whereas teague will be lucky to have 2 or 3 more. we need to develop our younger players and though they might not perform as well as teague theyre not going to be the difference in the result and at least we'll still finish lower in the ladder and pick up good draft picks

I would keep Prendergast in the team even though you shut your eyes when he passes the ball. Really disappointing first half.Kouta rested means he gets 18 days off and misses out on a flight to Perth.Tbird great yesterday but Tredrea playing under duress.Livo is not a backman .Play him on a forward flank with tha ants and see how he goes.
