But he also had a long kick De Rui was one of my favourites.

Weve spoken about how physical he was...

Da Rui >>>>>>>>> Byron Pickett

Klomp was pretty physical as well- do you remember the day he shirtfronted Dipierdomenico in the goalsquare Princes Park (Heatly Stand end). Klomp broke Dipper's sternum - it was sensational - we all heard the crack from where we were standing. 8)

It was NQX.
I visited a mate who was working there and DaRui and Dunstall worked in the same department.
Klomp is involved in junior football Agro. Looks very similar except for about 25 kilos.

It rarely worked.

Agro,

Howell only did well in the 1981 GF because Moore was lame with a badly strained hamstring. Moore should not have played

Whatever....he played in a Carlton Premiership side; did the job he was picked to do; and played 39 games more for Carlton than I did..

Yeah I was being a bit flip (as per usual  ) with lists of 55 in those days you could afford to carry players like Howell and Bortolotto and bring them in for various roles - blokes like them have 3 more Premiership medallions than players like Bob Skilton, Kevin Murray etc.

Cant afford to do it these days unfortunately.

Good luck to Howell and Bortolotto.

It was this era that developed my hatred of Essendon*. We had such a good team, but because they had so many talls, we would be reactive and bring in the De Luca's of the era purely to match their height.

Typically in these games a Glascott or Marcou would be carted off on a stretcher and someone would be reported for retaliating (in the spirit of the World Wrestling Federation the umpire was always looking elsewhere when the Carlton player went down). Consequently I have zero tolerance of Essendon* supporters complaining when they are on the receiving end of a good hit (not that I carry a grudge or anything).

So by the time we lost a player or two on stretchers, had blokes looking to square off and had 2 or 3 Adrian De Luca's running around, a team that in its day was awesome (and is not suitably acclaimed as such) turned into a rabble.

It was when my hatred of Sheedy as No.10 for Richmond transferred directly to his Essendon*; who played like him.....not surprisingly.

It's true that Glascott and Marcou were prime targets of Bradbury; Foulds; Duckworth; Carey; Merrett; and the little turd Ezard.

Was at VFL Park the day Da Rui tangled with Millane. Da Rui came off second best IMHO and was never the same again.......he had met his match.

Agree with you R Heatley. Not enough credit from the football intelligentsa regarding that awesome team......3 out of 4 flags was an incredible effort.

Absolutely agree with the sentiments of Warby, Robert Heatley and Rod Waddell.

Warbs will probably agree one of the main reasons why our side of 79 to 82 is not given much credit for winning 3 out of 4 flags is the that the Chief Football Writer of The Sun at that time was Tom Prior (an Essendon* Man). He was filthy that Essendon* kept on bombing out in the Elimination Finals in those days and actually never met Carlton in a final during that period.

Consequently he never gave Carlton the credit it deserved in The Sun, and as a result the the mystique about our achievement never reached the heights it should have to the general football going public.

But a few years later the 84/85 Essendon* sides were lauded as the greatest side of all time.

I would have liked to give Essendon* a touch up in some of those years in the finals - but unfortunately they were actually never good enough to stay in the finals when it counted.

I know it's SLIGHTLY off subject but; my favorite "Up yours Sheedy" memory is from the '72 Finals series.

By virtue of finishing top of the ladder; our first final was the second semi against Richmond; which was a bloody draw!

And so the replay was the following Saturday when they walloped us by 41 points....an emphatic win.

Late in that game Sheedy told John Nicholls (who of course was our Captain Coach); to "Give it away Nick....you're past it".

Two weeks later; we kicked a Grand Final record winning score defeating Richmond for the Flag; and John Nicholls kicked 6 goals, as did Robert Walls, while Jezza kicked 7.

Nobody can ever take away from us such glorious memories....nobody.

Da Rui was from East Perth - not sure how many games he played - more then 50 but I don't recall him playing his hundred for the Royals - but I could be wrong.

He played in an era where East Perth had a great junior development program and produced a lot of VFL players (turner, Dennis, Ironmonger, Starcevich, Christian, Peos, Bain) but as a club they never succeeded.

A Steve Da-Rui shirt front in the mid eighties was assumed when you bought your ticket !!
