Arguing contact accidental.

Field umpire has supported he thought it was accidental, not head high & not worth a free.

But deeming the contact accidental is just bullshit as well. It was a well aimed legitimate hip and shoulder - deeming the contact accidental is a cop out.

Contact to the head was accidental. Otherwise a legitimite hip & shoulder.

But the Blues managed to argue the contact between the players was purely accidental and that Rosa slipped as they collided meaning his relative height was lower making him more susceptible to a blow to the head.

Video of the incident showed the ball bounced up into Rosa's arms and that he instinctively tried to avoid contact with Houlihan causing him to slip.

Umpire Hendrie claimed he didn't think it was a reportable offence at the time and that the bump was fair and quite legal despite Rosa being knocked unconscious from the blow.

Houlihan said he prided himself on being a ball player and that he only had eyes for the ball as he approached Rosa. He also said it was Rosa's sudden movement that resulted in the contact to the Eagle's head and not his shoulder as was intended.

The jury of David Pittman, Wayne Schimmelbusch and Stewart Loewe took only two minutes to reach a not guilty verdict, and leave Houlihan free to play this Friday night.

Quote:
Rosa had just taken possession on the wing in the third quarter when Houlihan floored him with a hip-and-shoulder bump.

The two had been racing for the ball and Houlihan argued a bump was his only possible action.

"All I did was brace myself (in) that last split second and bump him ... I don't think I did anything unreasonable," he said.

"If there was any contact to the head it was all accidental, but I think the majority of the bump was to his shoulder.

"I'm allowed to bump, so I went into the contest trying to bump.

"He just seemed to shift his body backwards to avoid the contact."

The verdict means Houlihan will line up for the Blues in Friday night's match against the Kangaroos at Telstra Dome.

It is the first time he has fronted the tribunal in seven seasons as an AFL player.

Video footage of the incident showed Houlihan hitting Rosa's left shoulder and then his jaw, knocking the young Eagle senseless.

I'm almost dissapointed he got off. With Kouta AND Houlihan out, I was hoping for a bit more toughness and accountability in the midfield. It also would have made it easier to bring in Carazzo AND Blackwell.

On the other hand, hopefully the experience (bump) gives him 'the taste' and he starts to lay a few more.
