Lance turns 27 this year....Murph turns 19; and has plenty of time to prove himself Captain material.

The youngest Carlton Captain in my memory is Stephen Kernahan who was appointed Captain of Carlton at 23.....a great decision that had a lot of doubters at the time.

Of course he went on to Captain Carlton for an AFL record of 226 matches; a record that may never be broken.

By the time Murphy is ready to take over as captain Lance will be well and truely ready to hand it over. There may even be someone in between.

Well done Lance, well deserved.

Yes good decision. I've always been on the Stevo for captain bandwagon but Whitnall has had a better season so I think it's a good decision.

Well done Lance, a great turnaround!

i dont think it matters who has a better season because stevo has bee putting out quality seasons every single year where this is really the ifrs year since 2000 that lance has played well i think the decision was more based around the way lance leads the team and is always trying to help out others whereas stevo leaads more by actions. i think it was the correct decision but i would have liked to have seen both of them have a crack at it before the permanent captain for next year is named

I think its a good call by the Club and as most people have observed Lance and Stevo have been the unoffical leaders of the club this season without being actually name. Kouta has been more the spiritual leader and the person who was given the captaincy for a variety of reasons

But if as has been obserevd both Lance and Stevo have been far more obvious as leadership role models for the team talking up the players .. involving the crowds encouraging players or directing positions... also after most of the matches it has been either lance or Stevo who have commented

I would think next 5 weeks Lance will lead and Stevo will be Vice captain but prob both will be more invooved now officially

Lance truly deserves the temporary captaincy now that Kouta is sidelined. He has been an outstanding leader on this field for a number of years now (not just this year). He bleads Navy Blue and will do all he can to build our club for the future. It may be an audition for the full-time position, but I am sure that he is up to it.

Well done Lance - a reward for good form and leadership all season.

Hopefully now all the fat jokes can be about Ronaldo.

I think this is a pretty huge call by the Club and says alot about Whitnall's year. Perhaps his Carlton history, performance this year, and demeanour in 2006 is exactly what the CLub wants with the young list?

ps I dont want this to be a trade Whitnall thread.

Oh i dont doubt they dont think he is our future.. along with the Saddington McLaren..Longmuir and Chambers decisions.....

You see.. i have no confidence in anything the MC does ....

Its all dreamboat stuff....

Lance really wants it and has worked his ass off in the last few years to put himself in this position.

Look at it this way Synbad, if Lance captains for most of the rest of the season then it just enhances his trade potential, surely you would be happy with that, perhaps the MC has a cunning plan

Congratulations to Lance as most posters have noted he has had a good season and directed players and traffic on the field.

Wouldn't be surprised if the MC and Club wait until after the next pre-season to announce if Kouta is going to play on or not and whether or not we have a new captain.

Appointment is rubber stamping what is happening on the field. In football terms the guy is smart and directs traffic.

Even so the co-captain or rotation system in this situation does have some merit, although we don't have the progressive thinking of Paul Roos et al.

Great choice by the CFC. Stevo has to earn his stripes, Lance has done the hard yards and been there under sticks the greatest of all leaders on the field! Maybe smorgon can now work on the coaching staff. Bring on 07!!!!

Welcome to TC TroyBond! :-D

I was a huge fan of Troy Bond before he was part of the Hickmott trade, but at least he won a flag after he was dropped for &%$*#! in the '95 finals series.

i think lance was the right man for the job but surely stevo has earned his stripes a lot better than red he's been performing consistently for the last 5 or 6 years whereas this is really lance's first good year since 2000. captaincy-wise stevo has shown glimpses of wanting it and i would ahve liked to have seen him get it but lance has wanted it more than him and is the better man for the job
