How is this from the CFC site?

Quote:
THE FINE PRINT...
After several unproductive seasons, Whitnall had a fine year in 2005, playing all 22 games and finishing third in the best and fairest. Kicked 24 goals, including bags of five and four (twice), but with the Blues struggling in defence, he was sent to the backline for the last month or so of the season. Signed a new deal at the end of 2005 and has committed to the Blues for the next two seasons.

PLAYER HONOURS
2nd best and fairest 1998; 3rd best and fairest 2005; leading goalkicker 1998, 1999, 2000; All-Australian 2000; AFL Rising Star nominee 1997; pre-season premiership sides 1997, 2005.

So I would suggest that Lance has been one of our better players in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2005. OK Lance had some lean years in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004, but in each of those seasons he was cut down by injury and in particular missed the last 7 games of 2002 and 2003. So let's cut the rubbish about Lance's only other good year as being in 2000. Of course, 2000 was AA form and 2006 might be the same, but he has been more than serviceable in many of the other years.

Well it's about time. Don't get me wrong, Kouta is awesome but it's time to admit that its over for him. He has been amazing but time and injuries have caught up with him.

Lance is far and away our best player and its great that he is captain...by the way...put a quiet few bucks on him for the Brownlow. He will be right up there.

I found the comment that Lance had about his captaincy being more about him being an on-field leader rather than an off-field leader.

I'm thinking there won't be any BBQ gatherings at Chez Whitnall for the boys anytime in the next 5 to 6 weeks.

Begs the question about what makes a good leader - deeds on the field, deeds off the field or a balanced combination of both?

What makes a leader is someone who can lead in a way that inspires everybody else to go beyond the call of duty.

What we need is not one leader but leadership across the board.

A sense of leadership and camaraderie to inspire the 2nd/ 3rd tiers to lift when we need it.

Because we dont have obvious candidates to do this a figurehead was a single ridiculous appointment .
the challenge should have been paid down to a handfull of players to accept the responsibility and create a leadership base.

Not a single entity.. which will change nothing.

Bees dont go to honeypots they go to flowers to collect pollen or whatever they collect...

I am simply gtiving my views on leadership and what the club needs and not remarking about Lance personally.

We dont need one person... we need a leadership base.

Thats where the club has been falling over ... its obvious tyo everyone except the people making stupid mistakes year in year out at the club because the always look at the obvious.

Fantastic opportunity with Koutas injury to make a group of players stand up and claim accountability in the leadership stakes and not just leave it to Lance (like we left it to Kouta).,.. theyre not your real leaders like Nicholls or Sticks..

The MC is dreaming.... they really have no clue!!!

OK. You are right. How about "Like bees to a flower is Synbad to a Lance thread"? No that doesn't sound strong enough. How about "Red rag to a bull is a Lance thread to Synbad"? That's more like it. 8)

Seriously though I agree with you. The leadership around the club is not a patch on what it was throughout our hey day. Look at our last premiership year in 2005 when we had Sticks, Braddles, SOS, Earl, Diesel, Ratts, Harry, Macca, Deany, Sexton...

We must develop a real group of players that can as a group lead and then we can choose one of them to lead the team.
Its placing the corerstones into the future.

Right now we have kids like Waite (aged 23 / 24 next year) still thinking theyre kids ....

8 games out for Kouta??
2 skippers weeks to each of the following... Lance.. Stevens.. Lappin (in the hope they can pick up) and a couple of weeks to a kid like T Bird just to illustrate to the young group theyre growing up and must step up as leaders.

Then you re assess at the end of the year.

Yes but in every other year he's been paid like an AA

Let's give Lance a go at the new post for a month or so and then give him heaps if he fails miserably.
Big Red is having a fine season a great player with true Blue pedigree.
I reckon this bloke will be an inspiration as a Captain and I'm proud that he is leading the kids.
May just cause some embarrassment to all the detractors.
Well done Lance keep it up and good luck.
Ciao
:-D

Congratulations Lance, you truely deserve the gig. Your blood runs blue, and you wear your heart on your sleeve. You have been a terrific servant to our footy club. Hopefully you will continue to inspire our young baby blues. A very good choice by Carlton.

Tell me I'm old fashioned, though, but doesn't the Vice Captain get elevated to the top position when that position comes up? This would have suggested that Nick or Skinny would have been a / the choice.

Or is it that there is a Leadership Group and it doesn't really matter who is Captain and who is Vice?

Good thing we traded Campo / didn't trade Lance .. Congrats LW! Hope it's more permanent than it seems at the moment!

All 3 were named joint VC's but only Lance will be acting captain.
