Look Synners,

I'm with you. Kids in this draft will be a major boon going forward. But will you let us win some games next year please??? Surely the pain has to stop sometime......

after that its ten glorious years

Round 12 and already theres talk of tanking!

Serious guys... We got 2 gun kids at last years draft murphy and kennedy.... I'd rather see our guys make some real progress in the second half of the year...

Losing week after week will not help their development... and with half the season left.. talk of tanking!?

It's Pathetic!

Serious question.

What are you expecting will happen for the last half of the year??
finals???
flag???

Win 6/12???

what????

And as for Murphy and Kennedy... theyre only here because we won 4 1./2 last year....

At best we can win another 4 and loos unlikely...

Yes murphy and kennedy are here because last year we were the worst team in the competition... really Synbad, do you want to see year after year of constant floggings...

Would it not be good to see the likes of Thornton, Carazzo, Murphy, Kennedy, Simpson, Carrazzo, Waite, Eddie Betts, Adam Bentick taking steps and beginning to show belief and win games of footy.. Personally i and many Carlton supporters want to see the young guys gell and have real belief that they can win games of footy..

Remember what they say... 95% of the game is played above the shoulders and how many more knocks can our players take!...

Your saying that would not be beneficial to the team to win games of footy...? To tell you the truth, I dont know how much more mediocrity the players can take and it would be much more beneficial the young players learning how to win rather than constantly being drenched in mediocrity..

Would you like to see the guys play so well like how we took it up to the eagles and nearly got over the line.. It shows our youngsters are beginning to show some signs and are developing... And thats what i want and the supporters want to see...

A continuous kick in the guts from losing from 2002-06 is not beneficial whatsoever... And yes i would be quite happy if a top 4 pick in next years draft shows as much ability as what ive seen from kennedy, he looks like a very likely type!

I really do have faith in our young players who have played this year to continue their development.. obviously they will get better with age and experience.

The difference is, In 2004 we were winning because we were benefiting from short term solutions only and quick fixes... If we are to improve this year it will come from the young guys developing and improving as a team...

Surely what i say makes some sense!...

Of course i dont want to see them lose all the time.. thats why i advicate we draft more talent.

The fact remain wherether we want to or not were bottom 2 this year and next...
But an extra win or two can hold us back from not having a winning combo in years to come.. in the mean time does it really matter for 2 more years if we win 4 or 6???

and Murphy and Kennedy are likely types thats my point... we can do with more this year and next.. to go with the others and were set to make a real run.

when they say this is a super draft - how super is it.

I would rather us be ultra competitive and fall slightly short if it mean getting not only a top shelf first round pick, but helps us with our second rounder as well.

Having said that, I would expect us too beat the roos based on their current form.

However, if this draft is ultra deep, finishing 14th or even 12th, winning games, and still gettign good kids is ok.

Partially agree with Synbad.

I think one decent crack at the upcoming strong draft (including a priority pick) should be enough for us to start genuinely hoping we win every game the year after.
I think we only need to bottom out this year, make at least one aggressive trade for another first rounder, and the ship will be righted.

That being said, if we miss out on the PP this year, then I'd agree with Synbad. We'd need 2 years to get up and running again. I can't stress how important it is for us to get the PP this year.

If we don't get the PP we will need to bottom out until 2008 begins.

I hope that was subtle enough for everyone.

We should do exactly what Hawthorn did last year. They are already showing good signs, and have a bucketload of young high picks coming through due to them A) Getting a PP last year, and B) Trading aggressively.

by saying priority pick i suppose your talking in reference to a priority pick b4 the first round as compared to a priority pick after the first round which would be very ideal for us but i cant see it happening because then whats the afl gunna say carlton wanted us to do it so we did it and then all the other clubs r gunna start having a sook but what your saying is exactly right we get a PP b4 round 1 and we can look to start winning but if we dont another year at the bottom looms

We're all a bunch of nuffies! Devoting hours of our personal time debating whether we should try & win the final 9 games. As Blues2005 suggests, Que Sera Sera. Our developing players will cross the white line every time & try & win every contest because that's what competitive sportsmen do. What we all think has zero impact. Happy for us to discuss the issues but cannot believe the emotion shown by some.

I personally hope we win 4 games or less but I'm not going to turn suicidal if we win 5 games or more this. So we'll miss out on additional pick 20 if we win 5 - a shame it would be but not significantly detrimental to my long-term plan of us winning our next flag within the next 4-7 years. For those extremists amongst us who suggest it would be "devastating" for us to win 5 games & miss out on pick 18 - you're f*cking kidding me surely. Are you seriuously that stupid OR are you having us on? And before you start calling me an ignoramous, please compare how many draft pick no. 1-10's are currently on our list compared to Collingwood, West Coast, Sydney etc. And then get back to me.

We have the nucleus of our next premiership team via our current 18-21yo's. Pick 2 or 3 plus pick 19 plus pick 37 this year will top us off nicely. An additional top 20 pick would be a bonus but not mandatory for future success. Let's start winning the odd game game or two please.

I have afeeling Carlton will beat North, but in many ways I would be happy to see the Kangas win.

3 picks in the top 20 Id say would be enough to set us up for the future.. win against North and we probably wont get that.

However do too badly and win a spoon and while we get pick number one, the perception of not having made any progress over the past few years would be a problem that would not be good for memberships...

So a bottom 4 finish but not 16th - preferably 15th would be unpleasant, but with an eye to the future, it would actually be ideal.

we're talking as if ti is a choice of ours (or the players) if we want to win or not. it's not our choice and if we win we should all be happy we won but if we lose we can still be happy knowing it'll benefit us in the long-term i know we've been doing that for a really long time but i cant see us at the bottom for more than 2 years if that

I'm sure those players whose careers are on the line (Bannister, Prender, Teague etc) will be happy to sacrifice their places on the list for high draft picks next year.

It's a delicate balance this tanking game. The game within the game, so to speak.

Denis and Kevin will be facing off - who has the steely nerve to drop games and finish last? It's the marshmallow wars all over again - except this time, it's a battle to see who is softest

I'm withdrawing from this topic on the grounds that it messes with my head.

"Yeah, shut the door on the way out, wanker."

No worries

I think we're on track, though Essendon* are playing hardball.

http://www.talkingcarlton.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=7254&view=next

This is what I thought in September last year. Unfortunately the rules have changed, but we're still on track for 2010:

I say tank the crap out of 2006!

We all know how quickly a year can pass.

And then we'll be invincible come 2008 or 2009 or 2010.

In 2010
Bentick will be 25
Betts 24
Blackwell 24
Carrazzo 27
Fisher 26
Raso 23
Russell 24
Simpson 26
Thornton 27
Waite 27
Walker 24
2005 pick 1 22
2005 pick 4 22
2005 pick 20 22
2006 pick 1 21
2006 pick 2 21
2006 pick 17 21

I forgot about the O'hAlipins also.

Stevens will be 30.

Forget 2006.

Embrace 2010.

Synbad I know where your coming from but 10 glorious years? I doubt it very much. The AFL socialist system dictates that this cannot happen. We'll be lucky to snag one flag in a 10 year block of upturn.

Look at Brisbane. Close to a perfect team you could wish for. Period of dominance - only 4 years.

2010, 2011 & 2012.

By 2013 we'll be back down the ladder again...hopefully back up near the top some time around 2018 - 2020.

I reckon our chance for a flag is between 2010 & 2014.. which is just a wild crack cause i have no idea who our future picks and trades are..

na i'd say 2018 will be about teh time we'll start dropping off because all the players we've drafted in the last 2 years and in the next few years who all have the potential to be superstars will be retiring or will be very old at about that time. i really hope we dont start dropping off again in 2013 coz then we just dont have enough time to enjoy the good times 3 years isnt enough
