Take out Stevens.

I'd rate Blackwell, Bentick, Carazzo above him currently.

LMAO Do you watch any footy at all? :garthp:

Yes I do, and from what I've seen, in a good side, Stevens would be hard pressed making the ones.

He's been bordering on a liability this season.

Why don't you enlighten us, oh wise one?

Let's just say the brains trust at the dogs won't be discussing how they are gonna stop those 3 this week.

and they will be discussing how they stop stevo.

yep he gets most of the attention from the opposition. Hopefully in a couple of years with a bit more depth we can free him up a bit.

Good idea for a post.

I was having a chat today to some Carlton fans about best v important. The 'best' argument was similar to this thread, but important was a whole new ball game.

To me, one of the most important players to Carlton hasn't even played a game of AFL yet, let alone much VFL. Adam Hartlett is so very very important to our team (or the idea of a 195cm key position defender). We're just crying out for him to make it. Hartlett playing well frees Thornton, Whitnall... Setanta... it just shifts the whole pressure point of the team.

Much like Livingston could have been very important to us, but can't, Hartlett is important to any rise in our playing fortunes.

Bower along the same lines.

When I started thinking about my list of best 6 I thought about where Thornton rates. Like Stevens being the focus of the midfield, Thornton holds the backline together. Was disappointed with his start to the season, but I think he's getting back to where he was in 2004.

1. Fevola
2. Whitnall
3. Murphy
4. Simpson
5. Stevens
6. Thornton

Scotland has been getting plenty of it, but I don't think he hurts the opposition enough. I'd probably rate him at 7/8 with Walker.

I would say if we were to determine Carltons best 6 now with the usual criteria being how valuable they are to the team I would list them as below in that order..any comments...This is not for the b&f this year but generally.

1. Fevola
2. Whitnall
3. Murphy
4. Waite
5. Simpson
6. Stevens

dont want to put a thick red line through your thread but its irellevant!!!!

Last year Kouta would have been on that list.
the year before Would have had Lappin and Teaguey.
Then maybe McKay....
Corey McKernan before that....

the real question is who are the six most likely to be best in three years time...

and you go from there....!!!

Fev
Murphy
Walker
Simmo
Waite
Kennedy
Fish
Betts
... etc....

What the story is right now is totally irelevant

Sort of agree Synbad, but gee it's still good to see that we're arguing about who's the best players...and there's a good smattering of kids...
Personally I would say it's been
1)Fev
2)Fev
3)Simmo
4)Simmo
5) Whitts
6)..evry other kid that's been given a go

It's weird but I reckon if you base it on the past 4 weeks' form I'd slot the Wiggler in there somewhere.

I'm with Molsey, gee I hope the Hartlett can get it right.

Even a few games at the end will do me.

I think Synbad has got it about 100% right.

It's not about the best now, but the best in a couple of years.

The last two names really qualify where we are....Scotland is a handy player who has earned his money this year and Bret Thornton is a real trier down back but if they are in our top 5 then we have major list problems...if they were on the Crows list they would be playing SANFL for most of the year..

I think our impressions of Fisher and Waite are done the world of good by them not playing for such long stretches. They're getting better every year while they're hurt.

Both are packed with potential but really haven't done anything to warrant the huge expectations we put on them. I'm not writing them off, but they're not the 8) beacons of hope on the list.

You could take Stevens out of the side for every game this year and it wouldn't have made a scrap of difference in my opinion. Like Kouta. Not exactly missing him are we?

Synbad's got it right, it's about 3 years time.

But Synners you've got it wrong not having Lance on your list . If (and yes, I know the IF) he continues the way he's going at present we'll have a great leader of a young side who the younger guys will look up to. I truly can't find fault with his season to date, and he's as much an important part of the shorter term future setup as Murphy and Kennedy.

Of course if the right picks come in, someone else can fill that role

Synbad is right.

As supporrters of a struggling club, we live in hope week after week and doing a best 6 players list is worthless.

Would we have placed Fev on the list last year or Red on the list 2 years ago? I'd say no.

But for what it's worth here is my list because we need to live and dream.

1. Fev
2. Murphy
3. Red
4. Simmo
5. Scotland
6. Thornton

OK apologies folks I hijacked this thread a bit with some love for Nick Stevens.

To keep this on topic I've chucked all that stuff into the Nick Stevens thread
