Kenny Hunter - Still remember my old Duffle Coat with a big 'Ken 9 Hunter' on the back. Looked like he had been murdered every week but no matter what they threw at him he hit them back where it counted....on the scoreboard. One of the toughest players I've seen.

Sticks - One man goliath!! Pretty much carried 22 blokes on his back and won us games. He was an absolute champion and he still bleeds Navy Blue!! Sticks was and still is more than a player/ex player. He is a living legend and the soul of the club, the next generation on from Big Nick. We all reckon we're true blue Carlton fans, but can anybody think of anything more that Sticks can/could do for his beloved Blues?? I reckon this guy would give his soul for the club if he could. From Captaining premiership teams to winning B&Fs to sitting on the board and MC.

Diesel - I know he played for a few other clubs and I hated him when he did, but when he was playing for us he was the embodiment of all that I love in a footballer. Hard as nails, skillful and had the vision to see moves and passes where others couldnt. He might not have had the natural athleticism of a Judd or a Kouta, but he used his brain to overcome the physical limitations. When he was playing we were always a chance. The fact that every other club hated him so much just made it sweeter.

Honourable mentions to The Dominator, Harmesy, SOS, Jezza, Ratts and Fraser Brown.

1. Geoff Southby. My favourite player when I was growing up. Solid and reliable, I admired the way that he went about his job in a quiet and unassuming way.

2. Jezza. I grew up in East Bentleigh and was one of only two Carlton supporters, that I knew of, at Moorabbin Heights Primary School. However, every playtime the oval was full of kids climbing on each other's backs screaming "JEZZA", even though most of them were St Kilda supporters. My parents never took me to a game, however one Saturday afternoon I snuck out of the house and walked to Linton St to see the great man play. I can't remember much about the game except the trouble I got into when I got home and that I saw number 25 running around.

3. Sticks. A great player who was also a great leader and loyal to the club. On the one occasion when I met him I thanked him for turning down the big money at Adelaide and staying at Carlton. His response was that it was the easiest decision that he had ever made and why would he ever leave?

Apologies to Davy Glascott, Des English, Bruce Doull and Wayne Blackwell

This is too hard!

Bruce Doull.

Peter Dean.

Alex Jesaulenko.

So many left out who rank alongside those I've mentioned.

1. Johnston....leopards dont change their spots but Johnston did..went from a soft flanker to a hard win at all costs onballer who was at his best when the big games were on....a winner..

Geez Elwood when was Johhno soft? Went from VFA granny with TWo Blues to 3 out of 4 with Blues and tough in all of them. We only got him because Melbourne asked about him and he was in our zone. Tough from the get go I reckon.

Anway still can't get into my top 3:

Doullie
Brent Crosswell
Kerna

1. Stephen Kernahan - Always epitomised Carlton to me, with his team ethic, leadership, & pride. Just a superb captain & clubman. I really enjoyed the latter part of his career, from 92 onwards, when he played closer to the goals.

2. Greg Williams - Along with Carey the one footballer I have got the most pleasure from watching, for individual brilliance. I'm a bit lost for words re his 93-95 seasons, when he pretty much owned Optus Oval & would regularly get high 30s, even 40 possession games. Williams' passing by hand & foot was just amazing & if Blackers, AB, Simmo etc turned out to be half the onballer he was I would be a happy man.

3. Ken Hunter - Unbelievable courage & a childhood hero.

3. The Buzz - No competition when it came to who would adorn the back of my duffle coat. 'Peter 4 Bosustow' provided some of my most vivid football memories as a kid. (Rod Ashman was another fav of this era but could only manage the front pocket).

2. Rats - Always had a soft spot for the underated workers. Much like Scotty West, it took Rats too long to receive the recognition he deserved.

1. Tom Alvin - The undisputed all time favourite. Just about the most inconspicuous 200 gamer of all time and the 'only' players hand I've HAD to shake.

GA wasn't Prahran in Melbourne's zone? I may be mistaken but I thought the Dees didn't rate him.

1. Sticks

2. Dominator

3. Diesel

apologies to Fitzy, Braddles, Buzz, SoS & especially Ashman & Hunter

To those who haven't included Diesel, try and remember his amazing ability to dispose of the ball and bring others into the game. There is not one player who compares in the AFL to his ability.

In reverse for those who have put Hanna down - his kicking was on a par with Beaumont.

dear KK this is not a best thread, its a fav thread. And your response is why i chose Fav - you cannot argue with fav's. 8)

I loved, adored, wanted to be Armstrong (he was my 4th) but I would never argue Armstrong was the best rover I saw.

fair point, wouldn't change my choices but unfair of me to question other peoples 'favourite' players choice

Surprised that people had Hanna listed. I thought he was very overrated.
Luckily Riccardi got injured in the 95 grand final early in the second term. He was cutting up Hanna before that

3. so many could go #3: Bradley, McKay, Ratten, Rhys-Jones; but whilst he hasn't achieved as much, I can't remember a player who has made me smile as much as Kade Simpson does these days.

Rod you're right about Prahran being in Melbourne's zone, but he was actually from Lillydale which was our zone. My memory is that the Dees saw him at Prahran and wanted him and that's when we became interested. I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure he was zoned to us and almost got away. Which would have been as bad a mistake as turning Diesel away.

Good choice Knackers :-D

Alvin would rate somewhere in my players. Loved his courage.
