Any ex-cheersquad members on here?

I was a member in the late eighties/early nineties.

Was a lot of fun back then - I'd recommend it to teenage supporters...

So, does that mean you're not really 7 years old?!

Maybe it's in dog years.

Hey Wangers

I was involved with the Cheer squad a couple of years ago. My friend used to be president. I have made the banner a few time all good fun. Best feeling going onto a packed MCG and lifting the banner for the players.

The are a few problems when I was involved with the cheer squad dont know if they exist now my main gripe was supporting of the team there are not many chants and at times it is pretty dull sitting in the cheersquad. They are the one supposed to get the crowd involved.

With regards to banner making the cheer squad has there hands tied behind there back.

All cheersquad members volunteer there time making a banner which can take up to four hours although most of the time. They might not look that flashy it still takes time puting it together. And if there are not alot of volunteers that week will take longer.

The CFC provide all the supplies which at some stage I believe they didnt want to make a banner becuase of the coasts involved.

With regards to what is put on the banner the cheer squad have no say at all it is given to them by the CFC and approved by the AFL.

When I was there they needed an Artist to help draw them picture. I havent seen many picture since I left so I guess they havent got one.

What I believe the cheersquad need more then money I believe is they need more people to go and help them make the banner.

I did enjoy my time in the cheersquad helping the club in a small way showing my support. All the best to the curent cheersquad members

Like Deano I was in the CS late 80s early 90s - I would say things are alot different now. Back then we used the club rooms to make the banners and then moved to the room now used as the players gym. I believe that now they use a hall somewhere in Preston - not exactly inviting to people not from the area!

In my day (now I sound old! ) we had stencils to trace the letters from, I think we got these from the one and only Visyboard (yep Dick Pratt). I am sure if the CS contacted visyboard they could arrange new ones again?

We used to decide what went on a banner without too much club interference but times have changed since then.

I posted this on another Carlton forum (TBV - 2 weeks ago) but didn't get much response. I only recently found this forum.

Quote:
Can someone enlighten me to the current situation the Carlton banner crew? Over the last few years, I've witnessed an alarming degradation in the quality of the banner in both construction and design.

Whether for cost cutting measures, environmental or time saving, the change to the top half from normal crepe to vinyl or otherwise looks really bad. And this is compounded by the small letters and no artwork. Today, we saw the most pathetic version to date - the letters were not even in a straight line! The only colour on the banner was some yellow tape under one word in a strange attempt to underline the banners' meaning.

We all now how low the club has fallen in on-field performances (and today wasn't much better than our lowest low), but the output from the banner crew seams to be sliding further and further.

I get to see, on average, two matches of AFL each weekend, and when they are in town I see the Melbourne Storm. Every single banner from the 15 AFL Clubs and 1 NRL Club far exceeds what is produced on behalf of Carlton's members in every respect! The artwork is there, the detail is there, the commitment is there!

What I see of the Carlton banner could not take more than 4 hours TOPS to put together with a crew of 5.

So - my questions (after my criticisms):
* What kind of budget does the banner crew run under?
* How many people are involved in the banner crew?
* How long do they spend putting the banner together?
* Who decides what should be placed on the banner?

After reading some of the responses already in this thread, some of my questions have been answered. I am dismayed at the thought of CFC ever thinking of NOT having a banner. I hate the thought of the AFL having to approve everything we want to say. There must be something that we can do to improve the construction and design.

could also get a stencil made of our logo, looks effective and would be used quite often - I think Richmond have one for their big tiger that they use often. Without sounding too knowledgable Richmond is the 'market leader' & generally always has been when it comes to CS's

The banner this week could be simple and inspiring. A little minimalistic and totally called for.

"KILL CAMPO" 8)

I am sure this short message will inspire us all.
