86 game out at Waverley when the all conquering Bombers met their match (around round 5) and we beat them with Kenny Hunter doing one of his cameos up forward.Everyone hated Essendon* then because of pricks like Merrett and co. We all thought that the Bombers were on their way to beating the Pies four in a row. They got around half way but that day was a changing of the guard as us and the Hawkers took over.

Keogh the game you mention was on Anzac day from memory - very windy and we were kicking against it in the last. Motley shone that day.

Another non-Carlton one - in 1995 taking Salmon off the ground against Richmond in the finals, only to see them go down in the second half

Up until that stage I dont think Parkin had ever beaten Sheedy as a Coach, I think it was our first win against Essendon* since 1980 - but I could be wrong.

Essendon* were really giving me the shits at that stage as the bastards had the wood on us - and those feral duffel coated pimple faced pre-pubescent Essendon* supporters who yelled out "TIMMY" got their come uppance big time that day.

Non Carlton - 2001 Round 22 Sheedy tanks last game to ensure they play Richmond, not us in the QF at the G.

Sheedy removes Hird at the 10 minute mark of the last Q because he says the game was GONE - the Tiggers were up by just 18 points.

The very next week they go on to beat Richmond by 70 points

Thanks BB, beat me to it. Allan was the other huh, well he was a big name then, before he went to the Bummers

....and Campo got the 3 brownlow votes too

We didn't need those big names - we had Vance. :)

AGRO we beat them by 9 goals in their flag year of 85, at PP. Is that the game you're thinking of?

Actually that game's another for the list. Hunter 5 goals at FF. Harmes in a fwd pocket giving Rene Stink a bath. Roddy Ashman's torp goal to the outer end :-D

Good get TheDuke - always thought that Rich game was a huge tank!

On a non Carlton note I'd add the 2001 Prelim to the list. Always been thankful to the Hawks for running them ragged that day and setting them up for a rather quiet second half the follwing week

I knew that.

But as I do recall after we broke our duck against Essendon* at that time - a verbal spray to any adjacent Essendon* supporter around me was mandatory.

another up yours sheedy moment could be under the catergory of 'You know you are too old to coach when..........'

A. You get a hip replacement

or

B. You dislocate a shoulder coaching training

Correct it was in 1985 at PP. If memory serves me if we didn't win this one we would never beat them - their list made up the majority of the Victorian squad that played during the week - they were dead tired.

I also like the 95 Rd 7(?) game. We had a few players out this day - Kerna was one - and we beat them in a tight contest in front of over 70,000. Blues fans and players were absolutely stoked at the siren.
footnote: we lost our next 2 matches.

Rod they also a few out that day in 85 with injuries if memory serves.

The match in 95 you mentioned was highlighted by Gleeson's 2 matchwinning goals in the 4th. You're right - Sticks didn't play (James Cook stepped up for a rare handy performance with 3). Diesel missed aswell. Parkin notes on the season highlights vid that it was our most important H&A win of the season, & I tend to agree.

Well........

i just like "chin wagging" with Doomed supporters about
their golden period............!

i always tell them how good their team was between
99-2001........and how they really should've won
three in a row......maybe even have snagged a fourth.......!

i then follow that up with...............

"BUT YA DIDN'T DID YA...?"......................!

"YA COULDA......BUT YA DINNA"..............!

i love that bit........it always feels good.........!

i usually finish it all off.....with some throw away line about
SHEEEEE-deeeeeeee............which always contains the
words "drunk" and "brown paper bag"..........!

pffffft.......the DOOOMED...............DIR-ty.......FIL-thy......%$#@ERS......!

kindest regards tommi

Agreed Camelboy, but we still have sole bragging over the number of grand final wins. We have sixteen to the Bombers 14 as two of their premierships were in the period when they didn't have to play finals because the premiership was awarded to who ever finished top of the ladder.

Yep, I'm well versed at educating Bumbers fans about that one. ;)

It's actually worse than that....I think for one of the years (1897?) they didn't even finish top OR play a GF...F*ck knows how they got the premiership...the other year, 1924...they finished minor premiers and there was no GF
Stats men...help???

yeah that'd be awesome if we could get premiership no.17 before them and this year they get draft pick no.17. the best part is we can all be confident that we're good enough to make it happen. :P

According to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Essendon_Football_Club

Quote:
1924 proved to be arguably the strangest year in Essendon*'s entire history. For the first time since 1897 there was no ultimate match, be it challenge final or grand final, to determine the premiers; instead, the top 4 clubs after the home and away season played a round robin series of matches to determine the premiers. The result was an anti climax of the highest order with Essendon*, having previously defeated both Fitzroy (by 40 points) and South Melbourne (by 33 points) 'clinching' the premiership by means of a 20 point loss to Richmond. With the Tigers having already lost a match to Fitzroy by a substantial margin the Same Old were declared premiers by virtue of their superior percentage, but rarely if ever can there have been such a hollow feeling accompanying a premiership success. Ultimately, Essendon* again managed to win back-to-back premierships. But the low crowds for the finals meant this was never attempted again, resulting in Essendon* having the unique record of winning the only two premierships without a grand final.

The 1924 season was not without controversy however, with rumours of numerous players accepting bribes. Regardless of the accuracy of these allegations, the club's image was tarnished, and the side experienced its lowest period during the decade that followed, with poor results on the field and decreased support off it.

No surprises about the bribes either. :garthp:

i was doing some work on the blueseum and found that during WW1 (1916 i think) there were only 4 teams competing so after 12 rounds of home-and-away season fitzroy who had finished last ended up winning the premiership because all teams automatically qualified for the finals, it was pretty funny until i found out they beat carlton in the granny and we'd finished first on the ladder after the home-and-away season, if there was ever going to be a year of no finals that should have been it.
