Agree. He'd been a massive disappointment all year.

It kills me to say this, but I can see him turning into Camporeale mk II if we're not careful.

The only thing that sets Campo apart from Stevens is a premiership medallion.

Both are overrated and overpaid.

Possibly in his last season.

I'd have to go back to the stats list and see how he figured in the 'throwing arms out to appear he's been held' category.

It seems you forgot he was a key in Port's midfield at some point in time. :P

It seems you forgot he's not part of a midfield now where he has the luxury of being the 3rd or 4th bloke the opponents match up on behind Francou, James, etc.

Again, someone else who thinks a few of us hate Stevens and want him traded at all costs.

If you feel that you're not one of those people, why would you look down on some of the points raised in his defense?

I mean you just flatly gave a good reason as to why Stevens should be freed up. You're just venting on the guy.

I could repeat myself for the 500th time, but you can read it all over at the Nick Stevens thread. You know where to find it.

God that was excrutiating to watch.

I kept yelling at my eternally optimistic sister that we are seriously f&%ked as a team.

The poorest skills in the competition yet we probably pay our players more than any other team in the competition.

I'm not sure what the game plan was yesterday but I can honestly say that the Dons did not want to give Sheedy a spoon and have played accordingly to avoid that.

Our guys don't seem to care enough whether we win another spoon or not.

We cannot keep playing snippets of football and expect to win.

Our season has been made up of a highlights reel - passages of play whereby we play with directness and consistency.

There needs to be a lot of soul searching at season's end from both a player and coaching perspective and I am not talking about scapegoats - hard decisions about where we want to be.

I felt sick watching that game yesterday.

We are so far off the competition that it is no longer fun going to games.

I was actually presently surprised we got 17.5K yesterday. We are so bloody terrible to watch and simply deserve the spoon. A club that has been uncompetitive for 5 years can still draw that crowd against the shockers. Not bad! (could be a post in the positives thread). Our skills and decision making are vomit-inducing! And for those defending a player who was getting the bronx cheers at various times during the game, Stevens looks like he has no desire to play for our club and plays without passion. I still hope he is bandied about as trade bait.

Its all about this years post season and beyond because there is nothing to gain in the next 5 weeks besides putting more km's on our kids. I dont even want to listen to the game this weekend, i'm horrified at the possible result...

I want to know why do our senior players continually look disinterested you have a look over the last couple of years so many of them at some stage dont look like they want to be there

Fev- has improved so much this year last year lost complete interest
Lappin - whats going on with him
Whitnal- Started the year with a bang but recent weeks hasn't done much at all
kouta spent the first half of the year going through the motions has come back played a couple of handy games
Campo - last year completely lost interest all together
Stevens looks like he wants to be elsewhere
French might as well not be there at all the the amount he contributes but last year he showed good form.
Houlihan -started with a bang this year and now nothing

whats going on down

I am flabergasted at Stevens sheer lack of interest on the field.
To me it seems clear he does not care about his football anymore.

His disposal has been ordinary in general ever since he came to this club. He does not have any "offensive side" to his game. Prime example was during the game where we had a ball up in our forward 50, Stevens was "tagging" Bell, rather than taking a risk and running into the F50 and making himself an attacking option. I know you shouldn't run off your man but in certain situations you need to make your man accountable for you. Turn Bell into the tagger on Stevens and not the other way around.

I reckon they look disinterested because they don't want to play under Pagan....would you agree SB?

Spot on Conundrum
Quote:
We got creamed in the middle today. The game was lost predominantly in the middle. We lost it to a team missing its two best midfielders in Hassleby and Josh Carr. They did not miss the services of Longmuir such was their midfield dominance.

Plus the rest of what you said. My negatives were Stevens overhead marking. For a class player he is a dreadful mark, can't judge the flight, spills it when he gets his hands on it and is really easily pushed out of the contest by huge men like Peter Bell.

Fish has great hands but takes an age to dispose of the ball and then kicks 30 m hospital passes. Also he takes a long time to turn now.
Waite has tons of talent but is the most lackadaisical player I have seen. He takes a big pack mark with ease and then disappears. Also another shocking kick. Neither he nor Fish can kick more than 40 metres and then are only 50/50 to score a goal.
What do we do with them and Josh K? How do they all fit in? I think we need to play Waite near goals and hope he can be bothered to fly for plenty of marks. Use Fish up the ground and make sure every time he marks to have someone running past.

Scotland and Houla run with the ball but I'd love to see a stat on the metres they carry the ball, and what percentage of those are forward of where they have got it.

I don't agree that Setanta was flogged. Murphy had one kick in the first half. Setanta made one mistake when he over ran the ball running in at a million miles an hour. Lets face it few of our players would have been leading their man like that. Murphy got him on unstoppable leads three times. If you turn the ball over in the midfield and the Dockers are running free into an open forward line with a strong leading forward in front of them and they deliver a perfect pass then the full back has no chance. Setanta will make mistakes but he needs to be played.

Our game plan is rubbish. We just don't move the ball quickly at all. We have got to run with the ball and get it in fast. Our prop and cop style just lets the opposition flood back so easily.

We desperately need a good ruckman, several class midfielders, a new game plan and a few different faces in the coaches box. I know drafting is hard, but we need to be better at it than ever. If in the notorious 2000 draft if we had got one class player - say Daniel Kerr, it would make a huge difference. And how I wish we'd got a bull ruckman like Ben Hudson. None of the ruckmen on our list with the possible exception of Aisake in 3 years is up to it.

Anyone?

Ok then, Ill have a go :P ....
I think Pagan either needs to trade these guys come years end and allow them to enjoy their football again or the board GET RID OF THE COACH.
If the board have no inclimation of the latter then we must let them go, so they can be used correctly and more importantly give them their dignity & enjoyment back.

There seems to be a misconception of what Stevens is good at.....at Port he was a linkman/finisher....Francou, James and Carr did the monkey work and he provided the finish....you wouldnt buy a circular saw to angle grind with ..would you?

When Murphy, Blackwell etc finally arrive then Stevens will become what he was at Port... a 30+ possie winner with a couple of goals each week....if he was at some of the other good teams that whats would be happening.

We have not used him in the role he is best at because of our limited list...get the right players for the right roles and Stevens will come good....Bryce Gibbs might not be the answer either....its got to be a Jude Bolton type who can handle the heavy work....

He averaged 0.6 goals per game at Port and averages 0.5 goals per game for Carlton.

He averaged 21 possessions per game at Port and averages 23 possessions per game at Carlton.

I think this is as good as he gets, I don't see much upside and a lot of downside in terms of the poor example he sets on the field to the younger players. IMO trade him now while he has value.

The funniest thing I heard all day (I think this is a negative) was the bloke who yelled out to the Barney Banana Umpire (No. 17):

"We can f$%k it up enough without you interfering!"

I have to agree with all the negative comments so far. We were a total and utter disgrace yesterday. How can we be taken seriously when our players can't even make the distance from 40m out. I said to my brother 5 minutes into the game that we look unfit/disinterested and it showed.

I am glad I am interstate next week so I don't have to see us get sodomised by the Demons!

I wonder what TAB are offering for Melbouyrne by 99.5 or more.

Gee he really is struggling, isnt he? :?

How many other current players average more possessions over their career at Carlton Jar? 15?........ 20?
Obviously we're flying if we dont want players who average 23 possessions over their career. :o

I agree, but what's his clanger count since coming over - I reckon that would've gone up a hell of a lot, too.

I just don't know if his trade value would be that great now. He suffers from camporealiitis and can't kick the goals or break the tacles he should.
