Can't win either way can I !!

By the way, if people think that 2008 is a little ambitious, then what effect will the 2006 & 2007 draft have on our ability to play finals ??

Was actually a good positive post, maybe out by a year or two.

Must have hurt.

While I don't agree with the sentiment, I spat coke on my keyboard reading that.

After watching the dramatic improvement & impact of our young players (Simpson, Murphy, Bentick, O'hAilpin etc) this year and taking into account the way that the club has rebounded from the AFL's savage penalties, I can't help but think 2008 will be our year.

The supporters have ridden the rough times yet there has been record membership numbers achieved in this time. This can only augur well for when the team is actually kicking butt on the field and the bandwagoners also get onboard.

If 15% of all Blues fans across the country were to dip in and buy one membership, we would have the most memberships in the competition by a mile. It is rumoured that there are around 500K Blues supporters across Australia which is a virtual untapped market for the club. This will be a challenge for our marketing & membership departments but the benefits speak for themselves.

As for onfield activity, the club has no real hangovers from the draft penalties, it's just a matter of picking the right players out of the pool each year. Wayne Hughes has already shown he is no slouch at the draft table and we can only benefit from his knowledge and expertise. Get a couple of key players to cover the deficiencies and we are away big time.

If we can add 2-3 walk-up starts (i.e. can play senior footy straight away) at the end of this year plus another 2-3 walk-ups starts, then the playing list will be vastly improved & competitive. There is always the added advantage of the players having to compete more for there places which should bring out the better in each and every one of them.

The basis is there now, today's newspaper article states how the young guys intend on being 10 year players for the club which means they are totally committed to becoming premiership players. It is this attitude and cameraderie that will hold us in good stead in the forthcoming years.

All in all, we just about have the players and we just about have the membership support so put the bubbly on ice, it won't be too far way now.

Actually Carlton does not finish last in 2007, but it does pain me to say that i dont believe we will get off the bottom in 2006.

So although a wooden spoon is hard to take, the 2006 draft picks we get are critical to our future success.

So I think that Bryce Gibbs be a blue and will join Marc Murphy in the midfield in 2007.

But as I have said since 2002, Carlton gets into the finals in the first year of the coach that comes after Pagan.

Denis is the man that puts the pieces together, but another younger coach reaps the ultimate rewards.

We indeed might surprise people when we play finals in that year.

We finish the home and away season in a low spot in the final 8, after a hot and cold kind of season, when we show that although we are pushing for a spot in the 8, our performances through the year say 'team building' but dont really say 'finals footy'.

but to the consertation of some (mainly the rusted on Carlton haters) , we do make the 8 - and then our new period of good luck begins...

Particularly for the clubs that are especially chosen by the footy gods, everything balances out quite evenly in the footy world - we have had our time of success and good fortune that ended in 2001, followed by a time of barrenness, which we are going through right now.

Yes, other clubs have their good luck too, but the timing for them might be different.

For example, a big good luck time might come in a big dose in May rather than in September. I am sure you are aware of clubs that have these experiences.

So in order to ensure that the footy universe in properly balanced, Carlton does eventually get a very strong dose of good luck, and in our case, this occurs in a very concentrated form very late in the football season.

I do feel that the year of finals footy will likely be 2009, although 2008 is still quite a possiblility.

Really, we have to see what Denis does. maybe he will depart before his contract expires.

But after this end of decade finals appearance, we are pretty much back as a finals force once again.

That finals campaign may well end in our 17th flag, but this occurs during the time of a very bad war going on in the world.

This conflict may have some kind of effect on the afl competition, certainly most people are very scared because of it.

People that dislike Carlton because of our past successes use these external circumstances to downplay the significance of our achievements in that year, but they are just jealous.

Why is it taking the piss Tommi ??

If we draft & trade really well this year (i.e. clear out the deadwood) plus add some additional talented youth from the 2007 draft, that would give us two years of top end draftees who should be able to play senior footy. Add that to the base we have slowly collected over the past 3-4 years and ......... who knows ??

As long as in 2008 we can turn upto matches knowing that we are a chance in 9 out of 10 of them I wil be happy.

Do we think we would take Gibbs before Hansen / Gumbleton?

I have no control whatsoever over what any of the posters on this site do or say and find it farcical that you can even suggest such a thing.

Problem is, EVERY side will get a quality player from this draft. That nullifies our benefit of having #1 pick. Now if we had #1 AND #2........

We will gain some ground by getting Murph and JK last year and that should bare fruit next year. But flag in 2008 is too optimistic by far. I'm thinking 2010-11 or as long as it's before richmond, essencum or colling-couldn't and the aints.

I do think we will benefit from being able to select the type of player we need rather than being limited to the best player available. I still reckon Hansen is our boy given we are so stuffed in the defensive department.

That's another problem with the cyclical theory. The rules change every few years. Priority picks. No priority picks. Some priority picks. 50 games for the father son. 100 games for the father son. And on it goes.

Very good. I said 'positive', not "Livo will be our next Premiership Centre Half Forward" fantasyland positive, but that will do nicely.

Good stuff.

I would never say that Livo is a premiership CHF because I would always play him on a flank anyway.

It's not April the first is it? We'll be in the last year of Pago's reign in 08, and it is hard to see who is going to be worse than us then. Realistically if we are really lucky Fev and Whit might be older than Paul Williomas or Lynch as premiership first timers.

C'mon Gerry, take of the blinkers and smell the coffee, anything is possible if we do it right. Pagan has always said give him the cattle, well Hughes is about to go into the biggest draft of his career, if he comes up trumps, we are halfway home. Let him have another dip into the top end next year and shazam, we are going to be in with a huge chance of pulling it off.

Two positives threads in a row..brownlows and premeirships....bit of piss taking or too much time in the desert I would suggest...
Another 2 years of rebuilding the list and then three years of youngsters doing apprenticeships might lead to some decent finals action....
