You had me right from the start with the reference to the newspaper footy.

I remember dreaming I was John James, or Ragsie Gould kickin' my footy made of rolled up newspaper around Walton Street and Essex Street Brunswick a long time ago. We'd get a few torps going but had trouble trying to pick the ball up off the bitumen if we did not mark it on the full. Compressed newspaper doesn't rebound much.
