Anybody sitting at the MCG on Sunday near injured and emergency players catch what they were eating -The amount of crap -hot chips pies etc they were eating was frightening almost as frightening as the first half by the senior team on the ground; -this was both injured and non- injured players - That is some players who would be in line for senior selection next week were banging into that junk -whilst not wanting to be too pure surely the club dietician wouldnt recommend and obviously even if they dont recommend the message isnt getting through - I know boys will be boys but shouldnt they be doing everything to enhance their ability to play given it is still in the season proper
Having said all that the boys did look very tidy in their ties and blazers and GENEROUS WITH THEIR TIME signing autographs

Contest between the boys to see who comes back for preseason the bigger than Lance Whitnall. Not sure how the new coach will take to that :-D

Spotted a couple of our boys recently and they were having fast food and beer.

They should take a leaf out of the book of the great man and we should have tanked in 2001 to get him.

Third last would have got him. :P

Essentially, if a player chooses to drink too much after a game on the weekend as a one-off, it isn't going to affect him too much. But if it becomes habitual, then eventually it will start to take its toll.

It won't simply be the alcohol that will cause a decrease in performance. If you have a big night after a game, you won't get enough sleep to allow your body to fully recover, your diet won't be as good for the next day or two as you'll crave fatty foods, your recovery the next day won't be as precise as you'll be hungover and tired, and the alcohol you drink will cause your blood to thin, causing any bruising or very slight muscle tears after a game to bleed a lot more and subsequently cause a lot more damage.

All these things mean that you mightn't train as hard or as well during the week and, just like tenpin bowling, the compound effect will come into play.

Understand what you are saying Frank, but do remember Stephen Kernahan being a very frequent visitor to the Sydney Road KFC. He did OK.

Training 30 hours a week certainly won't be enough to work it off

You probably think Ian Thorpe is fat too because he eats a burger or a coke ... just make sure you don't cheer too loud when he wins another gold medal.

I may be wrong, but I THINK the point being made is that, everyone knows guys are entitled to pig out, but time and place and if you are looking to portray the image of pro athletes, at your teams match if you are an emergency int player might not be it

exactly the point - not a huge point Dukes but probably symptomatic of a wider malaise - SORRY IF IT WAS A BIT SUBTLE FOR YOU 8)
Ridiculous analogy with Ian Thorpe - given he is a proven champion probably the best ever and we are languishing at the bottom of the ladder looking at our third spoon - keep up the good work and by the way are you related to WOOF

Frank, its a perfect analogy. They are all athletes and if you think they are machines who aren't allowed to eat any foods with fat content then you're dreaming. Yes ... even the champions don't eat healthy snacks all the time, my point exactly.

If eating a protein bar at the footy makes us a better team then then I'm hoping they do it.

Just think about this though, the lack of talent of the guys sitting and watching may be the reason why we're languishing at the bottom of the ladder rather than their dietary intake at the footy.

it might also be that they dont prepare themselves properly that we might be on the bottom as well but perhaps Im being too pure.
Moreover if the coasters or Adelaide do it then its one thing but a team on the bottom playing terrible and its reserves players and emergencies smacking into crap whilst their team mates are playing ineptly against the 14th side in the competition isnt a good look
Sure eat their pizza at home when they are away from the public eye but the juxtaposition on Sunday was diabolical for long suffering supporters sitting at the MCG trying not to look at the train wreck on the field and then looking at their confreres banging into junk

Agreed, not a good look, but a bit of a challenge to buy healhy food at the MCG, unless they take in a cut lunch.

And Wayne Carey wasn't about to cut their lunch for them.

I also remember trading first and second round draft picks for recycled players in the 90's yet we still played finals

Agree with Frank..its not a good look and not what we want from a team of pro sportsman. If you are undisciplined off the field even with your diet it will be the same on the field....you have to have standards and diet is a part of it. when you are a highly paid athlete..thats why I wont ever consider golf a sport...

The article from Judd shows one of the reasons why he is so much better a player than whoever was feasting on cr@p for us at the weekend. Yeah young guys need to be cut some slack, yeah they all need to live a little etc etc...... I keep hearing all of these excuses and that is just what they are. Basically it is all aboput dedication, discipline and commitment. If you have to cut loose, suck a few beers, eat a few pies and go easy on a training session then there are plenty that will cut you the slack. But at the end of the day the bloke who doesnt do that will eventually get ahead of you.

Make as many excuses as you like but bad diet is just an indicator of mental weakness and/or a lack of commitment and dedication. I want the blokes I am helping to pay (through my membership) to be living like bloody monks until we are winning premierships. If that is too tough on them, then let them play for St Kilda. Nobody holds a gun to these guys heads and forces them to play AFL footie. Yeah they might be kids and we might make a lot of demands on them, but they are well compensated for any deprivations. If the lifestyle is too hard then go and get an office job!!

A pie might only seem like a very minor thing but its an indicator and it might only be 1% in the overall scheme, but at the moment we need all of those little 1%ers coming together.

Fev's been off the piss all year and look how he has performed this year.

It really isn't that hard to stay off the booze. I've done it for pretty much all of this year. The one thing that has helped me heaps is having a car. I drive to night clubs and I don't drink. Not because I can't, but because I don't need to.

If blokes are fair dinkum about playing senior footy and getting somewhere in football, whether it be AFL or EFL, they need to be making the necessary sacrifices to achieve this.
