Frank, you have highlighted something that bothers you. You have a set of values that represent professionalism for you and I agree with them. Thanks for bringing this insight to our attention.

This is not a witch hunt, but perhaps a gentle reminder for our blokes of what the paying footy community expects of them as professional athletes.

Me, I love to have a drink, followed by another drink, but I'm retired and not expected to perform on a footy field. I'm not a prude, but I expect our boys to be following the path to professionalism. It's a small cost, and it's only for the duration of the season.

Make as many excuses as you like but bad diet is just an indicator of mental weakness and/or a lack of commitment and dedication. I want the blokes I am helping to pay (through my membership) to be living like bloody monks until we are winning premierships. If that is too tough on them, then let them play for St Kilda. Nobody holds a gun to these guys heads and forces them to play AFL footie. Yeah they might be kids and we might make a lot of demands on them, but they are well compensated for any deprivations. If the lifestyle is too hard then go and get an office job!!

A pie might only seem like a very minor thing but its an indicator and it might only be 1% in the overall scheme, but at the moment we need all of those little 1%ers coming together.

Well put 2nd effort. It's a collection of 22 x 1%ers that may make the difference between winning and losing, and Frank has bought to our attention that diet may be a reason for the 1%ers that seem to have gone missing from our game. We don't seem to play 4 quarters of footy anymore. Anything that gives these well paid individuals an edge, is an expectation not a recommendation from supporters.

Great stuff phoenix. These guys must make sacrifices and realise the upside to these sacrifices. FFS they are being paid to do something they love, outdoors and keeps them fit, with all the fanfare and commeradeship that goes with it. Try working behind a desk, or in a trench where you can eat as much crap as you like....they'll soon realise what sacrifice means when they are not doing the thing the love to do most; playing footy out in the fresh air with your mates.

Like 2nd effort wrote no one is holding a gun to their head. They've made the choice to get paid to play. That's not a sacfrifice, that's a privelege.

Ed Zachary - I bet Neil Craig don't let the Adelaide boys within 5km of a KFC.

I didn't go on Sunday, but at the game against Port at TD a couple of months or so ago, I posted that I spotted Bryan in the medallion club munching into the hot dogs and hot chips. I guess this is a contributing factor in why he wasn't getting a game back then.

The look is not good from a spectator perspective. These guys should be on strict diets.

In order to gain every advantage as possible and to give yourself the best chance of cracking it in the big time and staying there, you need to be committed to being the best you can be, particularly in AFL as your time is short - MAKE THE MOST OF IT.

the board probably "reward" them with it because they're afraid they'll walk out

BUT... if it was a guy like Davies... he probably knows he's gone for the season and for every season after that.. why not pig out?

Wouldn't last 5 mins in today's game.

They wouldn't be smoking today!

Jezza would still be a star regardless of when he played.

The food players eat - injured or not - is absolutely vital to their performances day in day out on the training track or game day.

An elite athlete (AFL footballer) should consume 70% of carbohydrates - pastas, rices etc. 20% of protein - good meats etc. and 10% of fat - oils, butters, nuts etc.

For injured players, protein is particularly important as it heals injury and gives recovery.

Players, in the middle of the season, consuming high in fat food is quite dissapointing as it shows a lack of commitment, determination and discipline.

I think I'd prefer to see what they consume for the 20 other meals of the week before I go blowing my load over a few pies.

Andrew Maher of SEN mentioned this morning that a certain AFL player had gained 6kg in fat from the start of the season. He would not name the player but I know who I was thinking of when he mentioned it.

Exactly.

If it's just a pie and hotdog every now and then it's hardly going to make a lot of difference to a player's overall fitness. If it's a more regular thing then it's certainly a concern.

If the player(s) in question are indeed living in a zen like world of discipline and dedication and are living on a super diet of uber gruel dreamed up by the nerds at NASA for 99.99999% of their lives, then how poor a choice was it to have the annual 'fatty treat' at the footie in front of your fans.

Unfortunately I reckon the insight was a window to the soul. If the young lads on our list are anything like what I was like living in a share house at 21-23 etc then cooking up nutritionally exact meals is possibly not a strong suit. Dinner for me used to be a pack of corn chips and a 6 pack!!

I'd suggest that we should have frozen meals pre-prepared scientifically for the guys by the club under the guidance of the club nutritionist. A bongo van could ferry the meals around weekly pre-packed to the guys different share houses. It would be a reasonably safe bet to rely on the inherent laziness of young blokes to opt for the easy free meal that just had to be microwaved over the difficult and time consuming meal that had to be specifically prepared. Of course in saying that I am assuming that we have a club nutritionist.

Unfortunately though, the way things seem to be travelling at the club at the moment I realise that the chances of getting something like this off the ground are about as likely as Channel 10 deciding to get out of the reality TV business.

I reckon if anyone can burn off the calories and fat content in a hotdog, it's an AFL footballer.

I doubt it would make a scrap of difference.

Did see Adam Hartlett tucking into fish and chips at the dome a couple of weeks back though. And only one thing entered my mind...

"geez, that looks good"

There are worse things for an athlete than the odd pie or hotdog.
