I know im going to get crucified with what I am about to say, however I will say it regardless of what people think...Should the Carlton Footy club appoint a captain on a yearly basis just like St KIlda have? I actually laughed a few years back when St Kilda did this, however seeing as we do not have anyone who is super-captain material at the club should we and could we introduce this system?
It could go something like this for the next few years E.g
2007 =Whitnall
2008= Stevens
2009= Fevola
and so on and so on, until we properley mentally and physically nurse & guide the correct candidate in years to come i.e Marc Murphy. Walker etc etc.
Is this un- Carlton like?
Thoughts?

I don't like the idea and I think the Saints would have been better off leaving the captaincy with Lenny Hayes. Reiwoldt and Ball weren't ready for it.

I'm for it if it means we don't have to accept one of the current substandard applicants for a long period of time.

I don't like this idea but I do like the way Sydney do it by having 3 captains. One in the forward line, middle and back line. We are just a short step away from this any how with the 1/4 huddle spliting into the 3 groups

No. I am against it even if our current crop of leaders are not the best. One captain gives you stability and integrity. It should be earnt - not handed to players on the platter.

Imagine if we rotated it when Sticks was playing. What a joke that would have been. I would like to think that down the track someone like Murph would take it on and hold it for 6-8 years.

Whoever said we had to? Captain's should hold the position until someone better qualified comes along and puts their hand up for it. Then the old captain should take themselves off into the snow to die for the good of the club, just like the Eskimos and Kouta.

Ok that's a little over the top, but the point is there is no need to keep a captain for the sake of it, just as there is no need to rotate the position for the sake of it either. The optimal solution is in between ie the position should be reviewed on a needs basis.

Rotating captains are a shocking idea.

St. Kilda made three bad decisions:

a) Sacking Blight

b) Hiring Thomas

c) Rotating captains

They should bite the bullet and hand the captaincy over to Riewoldt permanently. It has contributed to them not winning a premiership when a couple of years ago everyone would have thought that they would have atleast two premierships by now.

Admittedly the club has hit a dry spell for leaders when you consider that players like Silvagni, Sexton, Dean, Hunter never got to captain their club in the last 20 odd years.

I think that Whitnall should be captain for the next two to three years until someone else can grow into the role. Whitnall is not ideal but he is the best option at the moment.

Does anyone think that Saints players are playing for less because they are going to get a shot at the captaincy?

Might be a viable method for keeping a lid on the salary cap over the coming years when our high draft picks are commanding big dollars.

No I think it denigrates the role.

I fail to see the benefit.

I like it. Judd in 2007, Riewoldt in 2008 and Deledio in 2009.

I'd prefer to appoint a young captain for the next 8 years.

Give everyone a go on the list who plays in the 22 a go then they can see how hard a Captain job is to get the others to perform.
