Great player sadly lost to the game...watched him play his few games and would have been one of our greats...great skills, courage, and a very fair player as well....I think another Motley is coming through the ranks in the SANFL...not sure if he is related or not but pretty sure I saw his name on one of the SANFL clubs websites....

ahh - sorry about the multi threads.

i even remember reading this thread as well as few days ago, but completly forgot about it when i made the post about it.

really looking forward to it.

i have never really seen him play, but the way people talk about him it sounds like we missed out on an actual gem of a footballer.

the fact that he is still held with such esteem and is greated by all that follow the CFC with such praise is why i love the club.

They were discussing him on Club Corner last night

They mentioned he played in the 85 SA vs Vic state game.

He played at CHB on Gary Ablett & took 17 marks on him

Obviously I wasn't even born when he had the accident and so hadn't seen any of him. BUT if I could put it into context, watching that footage of him on the show and then seeing Bradley at the same time, I would say he looked better than Bradley, in the 1980's when the skills weren't as good as now so had to put that into context.

Geez he moved so beautifully, he just seemed to glide all over the park, outstanding overhead and a magnificent kick. He looked more polished than Bradley and considering how great he turned out to be, I also can only wonder what if....

What a tragic tragic story, look forward to part 2 next week.

I really enjoy the headliners series & have watched most of them. They are really well researched.

Paul Meldrum has apparently never spoken about the accident in public except for this interview - what a terribly sad story.

I've seen Motts at the club a few times & the reception he gets from the club, players & supporters each time is just amazing.

If only I remembered seeing him play, was just a bit too young.

really tragic loss for not only the carlton football club but the league as a whole.

very well presented show tonight, emotional stuff from a carlton POV, next week will be even more emotional. having missed mots' era and only going off what dad has said in the past the game was robbed of an out and out champion.

interesting that the show put to bed the drag racing theory.

Remembered seeing Mots play was on the verge of opening up with that accident cut it short. Would have been a champion player.

Also sad when u consider that it also affected guys like Molly who witnessed the accident with Braddles.

seeing that diagram of how the accident happened..it really shits me that a driver cango all the way across traintracks and hit motts full speed exactly in the position that he was in on the drivers side, the way david parkin talked about him this guy could have been our greatest ever player and probably would have been our coach right now too. its a real spew. :(

More than how good a footballer he was, he just seems like such a nice knock about bloke.

So sad.

Excellent part 1. Was really moved when Molly was speaking. Had a little chuckle when Collo said it took a fair bit of work to get the 3 Sth. Australians across to the blues 8) .
Would be a shame if any blues fan missed this.

I saw Motts play pretty much every game for Carlton and he was set to be a great ruck rover type, but with high marking skills, I have no doubt that he would have been just as succesful as Braddles and Sticks.

More importantly I feel for the man though, had his whole life in front of him and it was taken away in a flash through absolutely no fault of his own...

I tear up everytime I see Motts on television now, but mostly because I am so proud of how he has fought back from this dreadful accident, and gone on to live a fulfilling life. He has the most optimistic attitude of anyone you will ever meet and is an absolute credit to his family..and our football club.

A dead set set Carlton legend is Peter Motley.

I wasn't old enough to see Motts play, but the old man loved him.
He still tells me that the moment Motts came over he was his new fav player and was going to be better then Braddles.

I know we hear it alot, but it's gotta say something about Motts and how good he was.

I thought Meldrom talking about the crash for 1st time pretty amazing. Had not spoken about it in public or even to Motts.

Sent a chill up the spine at 1 point.

Dispels the talk that Braddles witnessed the accident or that Molly was in the car with Braddles. How weird would it be being Braddles, stuck in traffic a bit further back, not knowing why and taking a side street, going home and seeing Mots wasn't there. Then getting that call 40 minutes later.

Seems that Molly was in a daze and even when he tries to recollect, it is as though he is right back in there in that daze.

My memory of it was that it had happened, didn't realise it was so bad at the time, still thought he would come back and play for a long time. Also remember that we came out and served it up to the Cats a couple of days later.

Peter Dean's impromptu grand final speech still sends chills down my spine.
