Wallsy mentioned Marc Murphy as a possible captain for Carlton pointing to youth and future of the club.

Gotta say...I kinda LOVE the idea!!

Worked in the past with our club...

I heard Walls about two weeks ago say that Carlton should have three captains - Whitnall, Fevola and Murphy.

Freo lost to Sydney by a few goals and he wanted Connolly sacked. Now he thinks Connolly is fantastic. He changes his mind every five minutes to suit his situation.

AFL football has passed Walls by just like it passes a coach or a player by. His special comments are pretty lousy these days and it's time to give someone else a try.

i dont mind the idea of whitnall, fev and murph as co-captains until murph is ready to do it himself. as i said in the thread about captains my only concern would this would be if the senior players sucha s stevens , scotland etc. who are all doing a fantastic job in looking after, guiding and teaching murphy stop doing so because he is captain otherwise i really like the idea as we dont have a standout captain.

So the way Freo was playing 7 or 8 weeks ago is the same as they are playing now?

I reckon Wallsy's comments back then were on the money. Kudos should go to Freo for turning their form around 180° I reckon.

Well I hope after you sacked Connolly you got him across to Carlton, I reckon he's alright.

Twenty years ago (well not quite) Walls made Sticks captain after one season. Completely different set of circumstances and sticks was 23.

I can see some of his logic - all and sundry say they want to be captain but the actions of leader aren't there. You can see this is a trait of young Murphy.

Rotate the captaincy intra year - say every 4-5 rounds. Why not try something different?

Eventually I would love to see Murphy as our captain, but I think making him captain at such a young age would put him under way too much pressure too soon.

Let him earn it. We can all see he is captaincy material but he hasn't got the runs on the board yet. Sends the wrong message to the rest of the playing group and would also piss off the older players like Fev and Whits who have thrown their hats in the ring for the job.

All in all, a stupid idea from Walls.

My memory of it was that John Elliott and Wes Lofts told Robert Walls that Sticks was to be made Captain for season 1987.

I had heard at the time the major thinking behind it was because a South Australian side was heavily rumoured to be entering the VFL - Elliott and Lofts wanted to lock Kernahan into the club as Captain.

Wallsy said Hulme should be the next carlton captain prior to Kouta getting the job  He was delisted the following season :? .

He really has no idea at all sometimes :? .

Reading between the lines Wallsy is a selector for the NAB rising star award and all he is trying to do is to get young Murphy's name out there so that he is not forgotten whilst injured. All the other contenders for the award are still playing and therefore will get exposure through their playing deeds e.g. Raines last week.
Deep down Wallsy would love for him to win the award.

Just let the kid play and enjoy his footy!!!!!!! He already has enough burdens with the expectations we have set upon him....everything else will take care of it self....

i'd go Captain: Lance, VC:Simpson, DVC: Fev, Scotland or Thornton. Think simmo deserves a leadership role ahead of murphy. both are gun players but simmo has earned it.
