While i like many carlton supporters reckon our coach may be past his useby date -reactive and behind most of his coaching adversaries, could there be another way of looking at it?

What if our diabolical season in 03 was managed by him to eradicate bad influences while we had strong membership and to ensure we got a top draft pick. Remember we only got pick 2 (PP) because the evil empire (aka the AFL) hadn't thought to take it off us even tho they banned us from the first 2 rounds. Then in 04 we win enough games and follow with pre season cup to again build membership to keep the club solvent. Tank in 05 to get PPs and then in 06 while using creative players defensively to learn the hard yards.

The coach has a watertight contract at a club that can't afford to pay him out. Meanwhile we get an interest free loan and the AFL is now terrified that we will fold and will help us at any cost as having no Carlton hurts them as much as it does us.

Coach will opt for picks in 07 as well. Then in 08, having recruited a gun strategist and built up the defensive skills of young players, unleashes them in 08 to devastating effect thus saving his job, his reputation, and perhaps our club.

Fanciful? maybe
Am I mad, is DP really bad, or is a he a jack the lad with a plan so rad that we can't see the forest for the trees..... Probably not, but then again.... maybe.

End of season, time for wishful thinking

We cant formulate a simple kick in strategy.
How the hell could we come up with something like THAT!

That's why it's such a cunning plan.

No-one would ever believe it...

Have no doubt mid 2005 and after about round 10 2006 he was happy to play for picks - wouldn't have won many more anyway. Would love for him to trade away a few on the offseason this year to ensure a low finish next year but it wont happen. I am actually pleased Pagan has a two year deal at the moment coz it means if things go to shit early next year he won't be afraid to lose games knowing he still has 2008 to perform.

Tank it next year and we will have picks 2,1,4,1,1,2 all running around in the one team in 2008.

I think you might be close to the money on unleasing the team when the time is right.

I have grappled with this thought all year. Or something close to it - mine had some Darryl Somers in there as well.

But I ask you, SERIOUSLY,

when has Pagan made an attacking move all year? When the opposition burps or farts and it is seen as a threat, we flood, we move Whitnall back (earlier in the year), we put Stevens back, we start with Scotland and Walker back and sometimes Simpson... I mean it looks like we set out to lose but lose mildly every game.

Consider in 2005 Pagan played Collins to a tee and got his contract extension. 4 nuffy wins at the end of 2004 and the exhiliarting 2005 Wok and he went cap in hand to get his cash. With the extension all he really needs to do, knowing the Club is broke and the Directors hate each other, is to perform in 2008. The best way to perform in 2008 is to have the worst 2006 and 2007 you can think of, slurp up draft picks for as long as you can and then actually try to win games in 2008.

The thing I dont get is why theres been so few opportunities given to last years draft picks but hey its only a theory.
