If he is out of contract at the end of the year, Collingwood still can't grab him like Essendon* did with Campo. We hold the ultimate trump card. If we finish bottom, we could use our first pick in the PSD to re-draft him.

We could have re-drafted Campo last year, but chose not to. Remember we won the wooden-spoon last year as well.

I accept that, malleefowl, but I don't think the Campo situation is a good predictor of how we handle this one. Campo had been holding out for a price that Carlton was not willing to play, and there was a principle to uphold that it would not be blackmailed by a player even if it would see no compensation for it. Stevens also has many more years ahead of him and will have good trade value next year. Sheedy felt he could refuse to trade because noone else was interested in Campo. In Stevens' case, he would need to explicitly knock back deals with other clubs to get to the PSD. And he would have to set a price on his head to avoid other clubs picking him up. That would be a sign of collusion between the Pies and Stevens that would force Carlton to send a message to players generally, and all of the clubs including Collingwood, that it will not be walked over.

Bring in Jake The Snake or Hartlett and play them for 15 minutes. We'd still get the same output as bringing in the same old fringe dwellers. Stick him on the flank and let him make mistakes and go away in the offseason knowing they had played a game and how far short of the mark they are and what it takes to get there next year.

If selected. how would you know that the said players are going to "make mistakes and go away thinking how far short of the mark they are?"
Let's extend the debate, what if the said players have an impact on the game? Both go way believing they have what it takes at the highest level.
Not here to offend other posters, but I have a problem with people trying to present opinions as fact.

No right answer....a kid could play ok even star but no guarentees he will make it...eg Tony Pickett....for those old enough to remember....played his first game kicked 4 goals and was toted as a star and then faded away to nothing...who knows what feedback he recieved or what he was thinking after that game.
Kade Simpson had the Graham Gooch syndrome....couldnt break his duck on the stat sheet for the first three games and was labelled a dud by many....what was he thinking I wonder?
Anyone with any common sense wouldnt be drawing conclusions from first games and I think the important thing is that the coaching dept be positive with young players what ever happens... dont let then get down or to far ahead of themselves....
I dont think you set marks or grades for players in their first games....let them enjoy and saviour the moment......

Wonder what Fev was thinking after 12 goals in his first senior hitout all be it vs the Collingwood twos in a night game....how easy is this

The selectors have to pick two sides this week and they are not just going to promote a kid to bench warm, when there is a final to be won.

Mclaren did enough to get back in for Bannister

I would make no other changes

Stevens has done the hard yards at the blues along with a few others.

His skill sets suit the club when we have a team around him to compliment his skill set. The last few years we have fallen a bit short.

Unless we got a cracker of a trade you just wouldn't entertain trading him, and I would have thought (wouldn't know factually), that he wouldn't want too go after doing the hard yards, and realising that with the possibilities we have come trade / draft period this year, that he will be in for a few good, enjoyable years of football.

Nick Stevens has been playing with niggling injuries all year..

He'll be a better player for us next year..

The problem that Kade had is that he barely got on the ground. He spent most of the time on the bench. The stats on his first 3 games were unfair. We all know what an exciting player he has become now.

I wouldn't be trading Stevo. He gave up his brother's wedding to play in a pre-season premiership. He has had a problem year we know, but if he gets himself right next year he will be amongst the new elite midfield that we are developing.

I don't know why the speculation about Stevo (although I would trade him in a heartbeat), he is still under contract. He might want to go to the Filth and they might want him, but they gotta talk turkey to make it happen, yes?
