Mmm, not a fan of Mitchell, methinks.

Geeze, he pulled one out in the first answer. You go, Den.

Do you feel you've got mandate — do you feel you will be the coach of Carlton?
Nobody can ever say it's going to be 100 per cent sure — there's board elections in December. But I can't worry about all that sort of stuff.

Yep, got that right.

Do you want Michael Gardiner?
The ideal scenario would be to pick up a 22-23-year-old ruckman to replace Barnaby French, but they're hard to find. We are interested in a lot of ruckmen.

Are you interested in Michael?
We're interested in a lot of ruckmen. I've been to see him play, I haven't spoken to him. We just want to see what's available.

Sorry, Dannyboy

Will you change your coaching style now?
I've been changing my style now and reinvented and twists and turns for a long while. People have a perception of you and that's what they stick with.

That's all right then.

The writing certainly seems on the wall for Mitch, which is a shame. It seems that he has been made the scapegoat. There's not an assistant coach in the league that doesn't have aspirations to be a head coach. He was asked to make a presentation to the board and he did! If Denis can't work with Barry, then how can he possibly work with the majority of the Board.

What certainly strikes me from that interview is the difference between Denis and some of the younger coaches. Denis interviews like he can't get away quick enough. He's not going to step up to the media and sell a vision for the future.

With that in mind, it's imperative that the club had someone as spokesperson who can, whether that be the President, CEO or appointed representative.

I think the photo is very symbolic. Stevo looks a bit out of shape. What a great bunch of leaders on display. Might as well not interviewed the man because he gave nothing like he always does. His analogy with steeple chasing was interesting. More like fallen over and thrown the jock out of the saddle by the triple out the back. Pathetic.

Hope they pay Denis his marketing component.Thoroughly deseved.
Fantastic media front man...
Four years in and he still has me in the palm of his hand.

And we need a ruckman???

Denis has drafted/ traded for like 5 ruckmen so far since he has been to the club... i think he should go after Knobel (read 'Big Fish') because he should be out of contract.. Richmond with the help of the AFL stole him last time...
Its time to recolaim whats ours.

He also through in a 'to hell and back'.

Honestly, he's just a walking, talking cliche. I wonder if he says this sort of shit to the players, or he just reserves the banalities for the media (and therefore, the members and supporters and sponsors?)

Dog - where are you?

Is that his longest interview ever? I think the interviewer missed a prime opportunity to ask about Pagan's moves in 2006 and whether he made any mistakes:

* How would you rate Whitnall as a CHB for the future?
* What did you do in 2006 to accelerate the development of the playing group?
* Before Setanta's run of good games, he was dumped and only saved by illness to Russell. Do you think someone likes Setanta just 'needs to be played'?
* How would you describe Carlton's back-up ruck stocks? Where do Deluca and Bryan fit in to the future?
* For a Club with a young list, what sort of development process do you outline for blooding players in the firsts or seconds?

Agree with steve. If we continue this 'its so hard, pity me but dont pity me' then we'll lose members, support and any short-term perception benefits from picking Gibbs, Sctorumberger and Massoud (#1, #17 and #19). We have to have a big name spruik the club (someone with some pizazz) and talk it up, using a plan and commitments to do certain things, and pump up our tyres. It just sounds like Pagan has accepted the longhaul 'draft picks will save us' without wanting to do anything else to push it along?

Look - no-one knows how hard Lance works. He's a great clubman who's been to hell and back, like we all have. Gee he's a smart footballer, Lance.

What did you do in 2006 to accelerate the development of the playing group?

Look, we're working hard at Carlton to bring on the players. Gee, when you see the likes of an O'hailpin, a Kennedy, a Murphy. There's light at the end of the tunnel, I can assure you.

Molesy - do you think if a journo asked decent questions we'd REALLY be any the wiser?

"The Carlton Football Club's greatness will shine through again. Don't doubt that for a moment."

He sounds like Bjelke-peterson.

Call me naive but someone has to ask the questions. If the Board wont and the press wont then how is anyone supposed to know? I'd snippets of something over bland nothingness any day.

Are you Pagan JohnM? Sounded like him!

Not sure what we should have expected given that he really has no mandate given that pretty much everyone wanted him out.

It was his usual tripe but not sure what the point of the interview was as DP's responses were tame and cliched at best.

Seemed a waste of space to actual publish the story.

Pagan's quite old too. Maybe senility has set in.

That would require competent journalistic skills and that is not a pre-requisite for obtaining AFL accreditation in this field!!!
