We need assistant coaches that know what is happening at other clubs. Pagans support staff has been stale for too long and SOS is basically a rookie. Assistant coaches shift around so much because senior coaches want info on what other clubs are doing, their midfield set ups/strategies etc.

Dont know if it would have any impact - but the appointment of SOS as an assistant coach to work with the defenders presumably may help in the re-signing of Thornton.

If SOS has any influence, you'd have to think one of the first things he'd do would be to reinforce the fact that re-signing T-Bird is an absolute priority!

Does anyone think SOS can smell a coaching position before the start of season 2007?

Realistically, we have seen how Smorgon reacted with regard to Gardiner. Whipped the rug right out from Denis. Made a statement that would keep the members happy. He knows there is a challenge to the Board coming up. If push comes to shove, and Smorgon wants to keep the job then just how 'rock solid' is Denis? A sacrifical Denis offering that locks SOS into the top job in November may in Smorgon's eyes go a long way towards helping him cement his Presidency.

Either way - if I was a betting man, I wouldn't be averse to throwing some money around that says Denis won't lead the club into 2007.

If its being done for the right reasons then fair enough..if its being done as part of a succession plan for Pagan then NO.....I fear the latter...Denis gets his two years and then SOS gets the job ......I dont want SOS as the new Sticks either ...a favourite son employed to appease the masses and manipulated by the board....
My view is we need real outsiders who have no bias or connection and have fresh ideas....if SOS is just a yes man to Denis for two years then it achieves nothing and is Elshaugh all over again...

Most TC posters have grievances with the board, mc and the coach. I'm not sure that whatever they do right would be praised by the same posters with grievances.

Any decisions made by any of the above, must be seen in a positive and negative light; put the grievances aside.

It seems to me that any decision made by the above is construed as inneffective, inept and suspicious...or it couldn't work because they're behind it (or they don't want it to work because it would work for them).

In politics always be weary of the sides people take and how their views may be biased and lacking balance; there's always an agenda.

Minus politicking, what are the positives and negatives in signing SOS to Carlton as an assistant (forgetting who is behind the signing)?

Negative: the only negative I'm reading is based on his lack of experience in the assistant's role, and basing his ability on what they see and hear as a TV commentator. The other inference (I've yet to hear with my own ears) is that his signing is conditional that he is coach after Pagan's 2 years is up (and that Lions manager Allan must be recruited).

If SOS signs and Allan is not part of the package, then this condition is probably bullshit and rumour, and as a result, I wouldn't be far off IMO suggesting that the other condition is bullshit too, until I hear it from a credible source.

Positives: Would be most welcome by our young defenders. May influence Thornton's decision to stay. Brings experience and new ideas to the mc panel. Will be adding value to our team instead of the Swans or Doggies (both valued his input). New face to associate with our revival. Media happy to talk to him more than they would with Pagan. Media friendly. Admired. Legend. Good PR. There may be no Bond or McKenna available to us (ie SOS may just be the best available or willing).

We have heaps of kids in need of development and I think SOS can add value there. We are not at a stage where we are competing for a flag, so there's no threat to that chance, and he may/will get into the ear of Pagan to change his game plan, and game day tactics (SOS has been herad to be critical of Pagan on Ten's coverage).

My verdict: the positives outweigh the negatives. There's no threat that he will cost us a flag and he will add value in the kids' development.

The point is to try and keep things in perspective by weighing up the positives and negatives. Keep a level head and keep emotion out of this (if possible). If you only see one side of the ledger then it's not balanced.

Agree entirely - but having said all that its time for a new broom from the board down.

If any of you were at the AGM which elected the majority of the current board just prior to BLACK FRIDAY 2002 - you couldn't help but be impressed by the atmosphere of goodwill that pervaded the room towards the new Board Members. The media outside were baying for blood but the change and the mood of the members ensured that things happened with equaminity and good feeling.

There was a feeling of optimisim with a new coach (Pagan) and even hope that the AFL would go easy on us given the change in circumstances  .

However obviously that mood and honeymoon period is long gone - that was 4 years ago and the Board have clearly demonstrated in that time they are not up to it. I would think the Football Department have also demonstrated that - and Im not talking about the fact we have just finished 16th 2 years in a row. Hell I could live with that - if I could see a corporate plan, a vision for the future but I dont see it.

Sure I see Kade Simpson, Andrew Walker, Marc Murphy - a resurgent Fev but these guys needs support - they need facilities they need mentors who can show support them nurture them - not people just trying to hold down their jobs.

Time for positive change - and I cant see this Board doing that - the goodwill they once had is gone - they dont have any of that currency anymore.

Many TC's are sceptical about this impending appointment. The question I pose is:

How is the potential appointment of SOS any more underhanded/improper/unwieldy/tricky/clumsy/thorny  than the attempt to "insert" Mitchell into the senior coaching job?

After 14 years at the CFC it's good bye Mitchell.

In addition i would also like to see the appointment of non Carlton assistant as well. One CFC man is enough at this stage.

Ciao.

I'll say it again...

what chance is there that SOS is Smorgon's rabbit in the hat for the December elections? And not for the assistant coach either - but for the senior coach?

SOS was only a skills coach in sydney and bulldogs right? are we signing him as an assistant where he needs to sit in the coaches' box and do weekly analysis of opposition's foward and setup our defence lineup?

I went early on the announcemnt today but it has been agreed and there is a pending announcement coming.....

but if people from Sydney and Rodney Eade rapt him up ...then that is good enough for me as a reference.....

so for all mitchell's mates...get a grip he is not a part of the future.....

Good news as far as I'm concerned. Always happy to see Carlton legends who can offer the club something return home.

Silvagni would be an outstanding get for us and for our young defenders.
I want Ratten next as well for our midfield.

My overriding feelings of mistrust in the dealings of this current administration have me continually thinking negative thoughts.
I hate feeling this way about my club.

My feelings are similar to others on here.

It would be fantastic to have him as our defensive coach, with no strings attached.

Awful if he's to become our head coach in two years time, with absolutely no head coaching experience.

Not saying that he would make a bad head coach.

Just that it would be an extremely stupid decision by the board to agree to this type of deal, without first seeing if he is up to the job.

Then again with the our current board, you never know.

Too True!! As member's we're supposed to feel part of the club, at the moment I'm just plain scared and waiting for the next disaster. It's like sitting in a lifeboat watching a bunch of guys fight over a deckchair on the titanic. Sure one might pull the chair one way and then another pulls in the opposite direction, but essentially they should be below decks together shoring up the holes in the hull! We'll be 1/2 way to the bottom of the ocean before the winner realises!!

Good luck to SOS if we get him but you cant help feeling skeptical.....and I hate feeling like that about the return of a favourite son to the club I love!!!

Not just targeting you Budzy, but these comments annoy the shiess out of me. Budzy you are 38 years old buddy. You need to find the strength to move on. Get a grip and look forward.

The best medicine for all the negative thinkers out there is to not visit TC for a week. There are lot of people on this site who are trying and I enjoy reading their comments but there are many others who just rave about the same old things, continue to repeat themselves and push their views strongly on the sheep (thanks CG) of this site. It is freakin boring.

Anyone who feels the same as Budzy, take a holiday and you will be better in a week or two.

GO THE MIGHTY BLUE BOYS!!!!

P.S. Carlton will be playing finals in 2007
