I have it on good authority that the difference between SOS' coaching and that of any other defensive specialist is that SOS is the full back of the century.

In other words: Same sh!t, different package.

The difference for us will be that we never had a defensive specialist before.

Hell, since he hung the boots up we've hardly had a defence!!

Surrey...wouldnt you think we need some new blood with new ideas not a congo line of old carlton champs who are mates and not willing to challenge themselves or each other...
I want a proper process where we look at what is around in the market place not this keep it the family approach which IMHO isnt healthy...
Have we approached others, has there been any interview process at all....are we learning anything as we go?....

You are kidding...she seen around often enough invariably helping out.

I don't think there is a down side to SOS as an assistant coach....

even if he turns out to be hopeless...so what! We could have * Mifsud from the saints....and he could turn out to be hopeless...plus we get no +ve publicity.
Each needs to be tried and judged on their merits...

Whats so good about it????

yeah your right, why would we want one of the best defenders to play the game as an assistant coach, it would get in the way with tanking.

Positive PR!

But he cant play full back anymore... and why would he be that good that opur defence will pick up???

He wants the job if he is coach inside 2 years...

He has less coaching experience than Mitchell.. even if he is a bigger name..

Sticks is involved with the club and he was a legend CHF too.. so what???

A good track record with Sydney and the Bulldogs suggests he's a good get.... come on Synners, smile and be happy about the club for a change!
I am with Sinners. He doesnt come accross as the most inspiring bloke in the coaches box. You can be the greatest player but also a shithouse coach. And why does it have to be an ex Carlton great.

Look it may be a good move. Who knows. I have always been of the view that an assistant coach needs to have done an apprentiship been the senior coach of a club. Micky McGuane has had the perfect path to a senior coaching job coaching Gisborne and Burnie to success before embarking on an assistant's position at the Saints. Dont be suprised he leads the Saints in 2007. I would rather others to SOS.

Look at the way Hawthorn went about appointing their coach/assistant coaches and then see how we're doing it

I think SOS has had the opportunity with his media role and also in his specialist coaching roles to observe and discuss tactics with coaches and assistants at a few clubs. Add this to sitting beside Dennis on match days and I think it will be good for the club.

I can't see how SOS being around Thornton, Hartlett, Bower etc would be a bad thing.
Maybe I was just a hack local footballer, but when a club legend at my club talked, I listened.

But is he strong minded and willing to stand up to Pagan when they disagree about something.

Fair enough.

But having been an assistant coach doesn't necessarily equate to being a good coach either.

Aside from that, don't you guys think that we have left our run a bit late for picking an assistant coach. We had an opportunity to sack pagan and that didn't happen, we also have a competing ticket wanting to come in December or March and perhaps sack Pagan.

Not only will we be looking for a new coach, any assistant would want to know who they will be coaching the club (in cement), and also what their opportunity they will have at taking over the position in the future

The whole thing is a shamozzle. Silvagni and Ratten, Misfud and Maguane, Mitchell and Bradley....who is likely to want this job? I'll tell you, the left overs from the Saints and Geelong charter, and perhaps others, which will effectively leave us with the second best. Is that Silvagni? Says who? and if it was, and there are no willing, passionate others, what will you say then? Bring back Elshaug to fill the void.

We can't win this one, we've got ourselves in a spontaneous unplanned position that will be difficult to know whther we have the best ot what.

Your right bondi, unless you compare SOS to Elshaugh and then you'd be pretty certain there's an upside.

Plenty called for the trout's blood and a replacement, now we've got one (apparently) that has a fair football pedigree, some media training (as if that's not needed) and a carlton heritage (a element that has been diminished in recent years from our once proud club) and we still think we've lost out.

I reckon we've dealt a good hand and still have plenty of room to move in other new blood before season 07.

The way some of our "supporters" carry on .it makes me feel I am supporting the wrong club
We are going through a rough time most clubs do. stop whinginging and complaining all the time. start supporting for a change or find a club that appreciates you

I just get the feeling sometimes most posters expect us to go from woeful to very good with a handful of decisions. This is a very long process, made longer IMHO by failing to embrace the rebuilding over the past few years, and we have to work on gradual improvement. Silvagni over Elshaugh over Libba seems good - break even at worst in coaching, positive for club image (the other 28000 members not currently signed up to TC) and positive for the playing group to have one legend come back (as per Fevs call on TFS).

Expect the worst (and we'll achieve it) and be happy with the positives. After 5 years calling for a youth policy we got one today and it wasnt good enough! After scratching our heads trying to work out what our assistant coaches do, we removed 1 and brought in a positive. After worrying about our young kids not getting a game all year, someone forced Pagan's hand and we got 3 debuts at the end of the season, and hopefully pretty soon he'll have lost his 10 go-tos who fill up our senior team, plus those youngens now will have 5 more top 50 picks to compete with.

The result may not be pretty but we are going somewhere good, albeit slower than expected.

I realise most of this, if not all, is due to a lack of faith in those running the shop. Not much we can do about that until December / March, but take a step away and its getting better.

This is not a problem, as long as we add to the panel someone like Bond or Longmire or McKenna as well. For too long we've accepted mediocrity, let's start a decent process to hunt out a decent assistant coach to put the screws on Pagan.

Pagan only wants 'yes' men. I fear SOS will be another 'yes' man - he always has been.

This is not the time for "Jobs for the boys".....I hope it's not.

SOS may surprise....time will tell; and it WILL take time.....IF he is appointed.

SOS will NOT make Thornton and Bower and our other "defenders" taller, tougher and big enough for the Halls, Tredreas, and Neitzs' of the AFL.

I remember Michael Williamson's summing up of Fitzroy on Channel 7 a few years ago when he said...."You can't pull your socks up, if you haven't got any on".
