By you I assume you mean the club...when did the club say they don't want to sign him up? They're negotiating...if they didn't want to sign him they wouldn't be negotiating.

I think it would be distastrous if we lost TBird. What he is asking for doesn't seem outrageous and the Hawks, with so many gun youngsters can't offer him to much without risking alienating some of them. I would have thought that with Campo gone, Whitnall and Kouta on a lesser contracts, Barney retired and the worst list in the league, we'd have loads of cap space. Where is the money going? Don't we have to pay 92% of salary cap? I would have thought we would have to pay him 300k to get to 92%. I don't agree to getting held hostage like Hamill but Thornton doesn't appear to be asking for too much and he is a quality player (at least the Hawks think so). I hope our people are sniffing around uncontracted Hawks!

Wallace has talked at least twice bout how difficult it is to get your hands on key position defenders in direct response to the Thornton situation.

Hawthorn want a defender right now. Fair chance the top 5 will be Gibbs, Hansen, Gumbleton, Thorpe, Sellar meaning Hawthorn will miss on the gun KPP's in the draft. They've had so many early picks in the past maybe they can justify getting rid of one this time around.

You could actually arugue that trading Thornton for pick 24 is MORE unbelievable than trading him for pick 6. Thornton for pick 24 will not happen.

What happens if we re-sign Thornton then it comes out that Hawthorn were offering us pick 6?? Sack the coach! Sack the board! Sack the CEO!

I hope the Blues play hard ball on this one. THornton is not worth $300k for three years. No way.If the Hawks wanna pay that then let em. He is a fine player but not that good.

Depends who we can get for #6 and how good they are likely to be. No matter how super the draft is there are no guarantees and in every draft several top 10 picks disappear without trace. Thornton is 22, is nearing his best years with 90 games under his belt and has played as an undersized full back in the worst team in the league with little support. The last time we had a #6 pick we drafted that quality defender Murray Vance. Maybe we would use another top ten pick on another Livo or Massie. Point is we'd need to be pretty certain in our judgement that our #6 pick was going to get superior quality to THornton, and Hawthron have already made a judgement. If they thought they were going to get a Judd or Dal Santo with the pick they wouldn't be giving it up. And we don't know if they are giving it up anyway. Also we suddenly become a hunting ground for every other club if we can't hang on to one of our best young players.

You want T-Bird hawks then be prepared to pay.

a) pick 6( i think is wat they have) and a later pick perhaps for T-Bird and 19

b) The pick they aquire for Everitt most likely 15/16 and 6 for 17 19 and T-bird

c) Robbie Campbell pick 15/16 (everitt pick) for T-bird and one of our duds...heck ill throw in 2 duds

It should be simple...we say to the hawks you want him...then get a pick inside the 10 and make us an offer otherwise get stuffed.
If we end up with one of those 2nd round picks and ries deals ill be gutted. Be smart Carlton....

It'll be more like 24 and luke brennan, and that would be them thinking they're giving us a good deal.

From all reports Thornton wants to stay; this is good because it means we can see what the Hawks are offering and if it involves pick 6 or someone like Jordan Lewis then the club can consider it, if it's 24 and someone like Boyle, Brennan, Reis, Miller, Dawson, then come to the party with Thornton and sign him up on what he wants. He wants to play for the blues he just wants to be adequately rewarded, the club are still in the position of power provided Thornton doesn't get used to the idea of playing with the Hawks - him being on hols with his teamates is good.

Pick 6 in this draft is worth the trade for Thornton. 2 players in the top 6 gives a 2 potential superstars. Thornton will never reach the super start heights proud, jetta, hansen, sellars, have abetter chance. Its worth the risk.

My guess is that TBird won't go... doesn't change the fact that we could have handled this better though.

I've been fearing stuff like this all year.

Carlton, the club stung for so many contracting failures in the past in a market of minimal overall salary increases (2000-2006), tries to keep it really tight in a market of substantial increase brought on by the AFL rights. We will try to skimp because we're worried about fing up like we did with Kouta, Campo and Whitnall - in terms of cash / overall proportion of salary cap given to certain players - and now that boom times are back our cheapness or need to be seen as prudent will lose us a player or 2.

We should be applying % of cap analysis to certain players and a 22 year old key defender should be a priority.

We have to be building our next great team and he's it. Even those that dont see him as KPP must see the value of him as a third tall - a creative third tall.

Strangely enough I'm not at all concerned about Thornton's re-signing. If the word is right and he wants $300K x3 and the club's offering $260K x2 there's a very good chance it'll be settled.

It's good to see that the club isn't just offering 90-95% of what is on offer elsewhere first up. There's no doubt Thornton's worth $300K and I think the club will eventually pay it but let's not get too freaked out by a bit of basic hard-ball.

If the club had caved in to Thornton and his manager's demands as soon as they were made public through the media we'd all be freaking out that they were spooked and we'd be looking at a wage spiral when every other player comes up for re-signing.

There are four scenarios left at the moment.

1. Thornton and the club come to terms.

2. Thornton is traded for a good return (eg pick 6)

3. Thornton is traded for a crap return (eg pick 24)

4. Thornton walks and we get nothing.

Scenarios 1 & 2 are fine by me, 3 & 4 are not however I think I'll wait to see what actually happens before losing the plot.
