Barry Mitchell hasn't impressed me so much that I think he's an AFL ready coach. But if he has developed players in readiness for senior positions, then he's good for development.

The only query I have is that maybe a different coach may have fast tracked and expedited the kids' development further. But we'll never know.

He has earned his position as Ants senior coach. That's about all at this stage...and I'm only guessing.

Why didn't Mitchell select Bower and Russell in the Ants seniors for the prelim, if he deceloped them as senior players? Are Bower and Russell senior players because they're at Carlton, and promoted in the name of development?

Mitchell is the fall guy and hard done by IMHO.....thought he spoke well after the Bullants losses in the finals and is a realist.
I wasnt a fan but have changed my thinking .. he got the best out of the bullants and the loss to Sandy was predictable...
As for senior coaching....could he do any worse than the 65Ok a year wooden spoon specialist...Mitchell did his job...got the Bullants into the finals and provided the senior AFL team with young developing players who did well when given the chance....
I alslo think he conducted himself well during the fiasco that was happening and was let down by poeple at the club who used him in the politcial infighting...I'll be sorry to see him go....

So Pagan is at fault for winning 10 games in 2004 and now when we need vital draft picks he is at fault again? Go back and read some posts after the Wizard cup and you blokes thought he was the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Any result other than back to back wooden spoons in 2005 and 2006 would have been a disaster - No Marc Murphy just for starters!

I like the way you think - and you're spot on.

There was a poll on TC after we won the Wizzer and we were gonna take the comp by storm.

When asked if we should sign DP or let his last year run or sack him a massive majority said we should sign him up while we could. From memory the tigers were sniffing around for coaches at that time.

I'd rather have Murphy, Kennedy and Gibbs than Tambling and Deludio :P

Everyone is an expert in hindsight. That is the difference between you and I dane.

You are an expert in hindsight and I am an expert all the time.

That's how I remember it BV. Fans were euphoric and after 2004 - the 10 wins - plus the Wizzer many were talking finals.

It doesn't mean the decision to extend his contract for an additional 3 years, 2 years in, after a bit of luck in 2004 was the right decision.

I am a fan and I wasn't exactly euphoric after we had just signed Pagan on for three more years. In actual fact I was quite depressed

Fair enough Sydney... but the 'euphoria' was linked to our team's performances and seemingly coming out of the dark a few years earlier than we expected, not the Pagan re-extension.

As was i.

I was secretly hoping Hawthorn would nab him (When he was being head-hunted by dermie and the likes).
To give him a 3 year deal when he still had 9 months left on his current one was just silly and i really don't think we were in a position 'Financially' to do such a thing and quite frankly, i just think (and still stand by this) that if we are to adapt a youth policy wgoing forward, we need somebody who is not gonna retire in the next coupld of years. We need somebody young and ambitious to take this young team into the 2010 finals, not bugger off half-way through the 're-building' period.

Hopefully we can at least hire an assistant with those type of qualities!

I felt sick when that happened. I made lots of friends here too when I said it was a terrible decision and that the Wiz cup was just a practice match.
