The Game

You're kidding yourself Bondi if you don't think the head coach of a football team that has finished 2nd last, 10th, last and last under him isn't a big problem.
I didn't say that. He is a problem; an on field problem; and that's a big problem. But our brand is being tarnished by board issues since 2002, and that's not what I call recent; it's still going on, and if Smorgon and Pagan are there in 2007 and 2008, there will still be divisiveness. I just want the off field to be in control, so it can have a positive influence on the on field performance.
I know my position on Pagan, and it's simple:
Pagan 2002 spoon Carlton signs till 2006
Pagan 2003 has no drafts to use; retreads
Pagan 2004 has no drafts to use; retreads 10 wins
Pagan 2005 wins Wizard Cup extends contract to 2008
Pagan 2005 spoon
Pagan 2006 spoon
Pagan 2006 overthrow failed; too expensive!!
Pagan 2006 Carlton sack loyal assistants.
Pagan 2006 Endorsed by current board for 2007-8.
Until Pagan is officially axed or serves his contract he's what we've got till 2008. I hope he changes his coaching methodologies (lets face it, all of them need sharpening up). He's got no choice; he's cheaper to execute this time next year than he is now. Otherwise we've got him till 2008.
But at least the club have reigned him in and are now coaching him.
Hopefully the 2 new assistants will bring new ideas and a positive change than he might from his loyal 'yes' men. His record as coach is for all to see, needless to say, and he's living off the thread of a contract; money permitting.
He has been told that the teams youth policy is the only way; no more retreads. Look, he's lucky to have a job, but it's all in front of him, unless a coup changed things between now and the new season. To get things right; he has to adapt to the modern coaches ways of thinking. Using rotations and bench properly and make the players bust their guts 100%, and create many game plans using the strengths of the team to win. Drill them and they'll know what they're doing, and you'll see there will be less clangers and more goals.
So, as far as I'm concerned he's as under control as we could possibly have him right now, and he's not pulling all the strings. And whilst he is here he has no choice but to get the best out of these kids in 2007 ans even better in 2008, or he's going to have a really bad looking CV.
The back room is a real threat to this club's stability in the short term, nevertheless, it creates instability, and therefore no clear long term strategies. The board and the factions have not served the image of the club well, and that needs fixing with a bit of 'class'.
The way I look at it is that I've only got 2 more years to serve of this very long 7 year sentence.
