I'd have to say at this stage I don't want to lose any of our young kids. It is way to early to assess many of them and for me they are developing along nicely. Russell showed last year that he is on the verge of breaking through in the seniors. All he needs is a little bit of confidence and he will be ready to go.

Sustained success does not come easily. We must draft carefully and develop well. At this stage I put my faith in the recruiting department and the coaching department. I don't have any other choice. So I must support them.

I say that we should do everything possible to keep the players that are reported to be wanting to leave. We need to keep on developing. We have gone around in circles for long enough now.

If Thornton and Russell walk out on the club then we are going nowhere. Smorgon and his board must be held accountable. I say lock up the place and be done with by throwing away the key.

Go Melbourne Victory. At least I have another club to support that's giving me a lot of pleasure at the moment.

Now that is something the flower on the AFL Commission and the biggest flower of them all Andrew Demetrispew should be looking at.

Sorry I didn't mean to call Demetrispew the biggest flower of them all - he probably only comes in at around 476th. :P

On the back page segment of SEN - think I just heard that the HS will run a story tomorrow stating that Russell has confirmed his intention to leave and seek to be traded to port.

I read it more of a statement that he hoped that when AW's time came next year things went much smoother than Thornton...more like Fisher's negotiation.

If that's about Andrew Walker, easy fix, give him the Captaincy and a 3 year extended contract,he is the logic Captain now as Murphy has only 13 games to his belt.

If youngs boys such like JR want to go home, then let them go home. They will never truly become men at our club. The real men are the ones who stay. Sticks Braddles, McKay, Motley,Klomp, Doro, Hunter, the list is endless... They stay grow develop embrace and become part of history with the CFC.

If guys like JR want out early, then they are not what our club needs from young up and coming players.

We want heart.... Who has the heart to play for our club. The strength of character and the Passion for the Greatest opportunity to play one of the greatest sports in the world at its highest level.

JR you are showing us that you don't have the qualities we thought you had.

Good Luck back home and on your way out look over your shoulder to see true SA quality . Gibbs welcome aboard.

I'd take a second worse case third rounder... And i liked the kid too.

Rus is Gone.............http://www.realfooty.theage.com.au/realfooty/articles/2006/10/10/1160246131567.html

He has a free ride into the PSD if he wishes.

FFS WAKE UP CARLTON - WE ARE NOT GOING TO RETAIN THORNTON OR RUSSELL, DO YOUR BLOODY BEST AND GET SOME COMPENSATORY TRADES FOR BOTH OF THEM............THEY WILL NOT BE COMING BACK

I am not fuming in relation to the players leaving. Although I'm disappointed, I'm more pissed off with the club for not attempting to get anything real back in return. It was their fault in the first place - if they didnt shun re-signing Thornton then we wouldn't be in this debarcle.[/url]

Blues despair as Russell asks for Port trade

Quote:
Only weeks after the failed attempt to sack coach Denis Pagan and just four days after full-back Bret Thornton turned his back on the Blues, Russell, Carlton's 19-year-old first-round pick in the 2004 national draft, did likewise with a request to be traded to Port.

His announcement is likely to cause further fallout next week when the future of chief executive Michael Malouf is decided at a board meeting.

Like Thornton, Russell vowed to pursue his ambition through the pre-season draft if Carlton refuses to deal before Friday's 2pm deadline.

Moreover, while Pagan and others from the club were scheduled to meet Russell yesterday in a bid to win him back, the Blues are understood to have made inquiries about Port midfielder Steven Salopek and young ruckman Fabian Deluca.

According to Port, Salopek is contracted and required and the player is also understood to have told the Blues he is not interested, but the interest from Carlton suggests that it is warming to dealing rather than losing a second player without compensation.

The Margarine Man has left the building. Seriously Klenex could of made a mint sponsoring us this year. The amount of mummies boys we have is amazing.

Mate stop talking sh!t and let the club do what it has to do! How do you know what the club is up to,what it's intentions are or what has really happened behind the scenes for Thornton to leave our club? For F*ck sake Trade week has basically just started and your pissed coz there ain't no result's yet! RELAX let trade week takes it's course and after 2pm Friday start the blame game! Wake up to yourself!

If Russell wants to go then we should make sure we push the fact that he was pick 9 two years ago. Even if he hasn't made a stunning impact in his two seasons we need to advance the positives to Port of a top-10 draft pick who is still only 19 going back to his home state where he will feel more settled and hence be more likely to become a better player. If they want Russell I want a player like Chaplin/Salopek/Willits etc as part of any deal, not a player like Toby Thurstans or their third round pick or anything like that. We need to be tough here.

- I have a fair idea of what the club is up to and what their intentions are because they have stated that they are not willing to trade 'any picks or players'.
- I know to a degree here more than most what has happened with Thornton. Please refer to p77 of the mega thread.
- I'm angry because the club has shown no real indication yet of negotiating in trades. One would hope two days in that if other teams are chasing our players then we would be awake to it and at least entertaining the thought. From what has been reported, this hasn't happened at all.

I'll take your word on and just let trade week take its course and have two players leave the club without without any compensation. Well, that's great. The only thing that's going to change that is if they decide to stay (99% unlikely), or we realise that our 'hardball' stance with them will not work, realise that we will lose them for nothing and thustry to get some bloody trades happening.

They say no news is good news, but I'd rather hear whispers or rumours of trades that have been discussed rather than " Carlton is playing hardball and Player X has stated their intentions to join Club Y via the PSD".

If we dont at least show some sort of willingness to speak to other clubs and generate some proper trade news then nobody will speak to us in the future, and they'll simply direct players into the PSD.

So we keep trying...I just don't want to see is accept far less than we should be for someone who could still very easily become a very good AFL player. We shouldn't cave in on this one.

Now's the time for Smorgon and co to show us their business skills at the negotiation table.

Tell Hawthorn that if both Thornton and Russel go into the psd, we will pick up Thornton. Then do a deal with Hawthorn leaving enough time to negotiate with Port. Once a deal is done on Thornton, Carlton should then tell Port that they'll redraft Russel in the psd, that way Port will be forced into doing a decent deal if they really value Russel.

The key will be to do a decent deal with Hawthorn but not leave it to the last minute.
