Russell will not go into the PSD (Olerenshaw has already said this) and take the chance of someone else picking him up, so stuff PA. If they were really serious in trying to do a deal (instead of trying to stick it up Carlton) they would have offered Deluca as a trade. Instead they offered the garbage pick 39 and got the response they deserved. Russell will sign in the next few days and be with us for the next 2/3 years. In that time he will either make it we can get rid of him with no worries.

http://www.realfooty.theage.com.au/real ... 28846.html

Russell's manager, Rick Olarenshaw, while more hopeful of getting his client out, said that if that was not possible, a return to Carlton was.

"We're not going to put the kid at risk of ending up somewhere else. If we're not certain of getting him to Port, we will not put him at risk, we'll re-sign him at Carlton," he said.

"But we're pretty confident at the moment that he'll get to Port, that he'll get past those other four clubs, which includes Carlton. We're confident he'll get to Port and obviously Port are as well, that's why they didn't do a deal. But we need to do our homework over the next few weeks to see where the other clubs are at with their pre-season picks, which gives Carlton a chance to turn the kid around."

Unless other clubs want him - which wouldn't be all that likely considering he hasn't shown all that much - he's still saying he'll nominate for PSD. Port were confident no other club would want him, so they weren't prepared to offer us anything of value.

Russell will remain a Blue. We still have PSD Pick 1 remember. So now that Thornton is signed up then we can use PSD Pick 1 on Russell (if it gets to that).

Sure will, they will stish him up in the pre season draft, and he would have to cry again in 2 years to leave if he wants and then get picked up by another Victorian side if he goes.

Shouldn't the senior coach have a say on who gets picked? :?

Rumour has it that Malthouse walked out of Telstra 10 minutes before the Taz deal went through because he didn't agree. I find that very odd that his input can be ignored.

Was it Eddies choice to get rid of him ? anyway, off topic but I think you guys did well out of it.

Good on-ya Bret. It was the clubs fault that all this crap happened.

Just shows how inept the Board is if they are pressuring the football dept in that way. leave the recruiting to the recruiters, the mangement to the CEO and coaching to the MC.

Precisely!

Great point! I agree as well!

The board via recommendation from Wayne Hughes??

I assumed that was the case. I assume not many board members would know all that much about the players... only stuff people had told them?

I severly doubt the board would tell Hughes to draft Gibbs or any player. I assume Josh meant they were backing Hughes to take any player he wanted and not to allow Pagan to meddle in the choice

or maybe I just saw "Gibbs" and the rest is wishful thinking

Nice spin  You really are totally deluded if you think the Board and WH are in cahoots against DP but Nice spin anyway.

By the way

I didn't start the @#$%&! rumour, mate, merely commented on the way it was worded initially by Josh.

That was a completely irrelevant post, CM. I think you're slipping

I don't reckon he should, above and beyond being "consulted" for his opinion.

List management is greater than the tenure of a coach. Many clubs are slowly realising now that decisions they make at trade week and the draft continue to impact on their lists long after particular coaches are gone.

Coaches are in the prime position to comment, and their opinion on players will be very valuable, but they shouldn't have control over the decisions. A person like *gulp* Pelchin who's focus is the long-term viability of the club is much more appropriate.

Its the way clubs are going as well. The coach coaches the players he has. He doesn't really need to have control over list management to do his job, so long as his KPIs reflect the fact that he's not solely responsible for driving the club toward a premiership

But the issue is it's not up to the board to decide who to draft, regardless of whatever 2nd hand info they've got, and it doesn't matter who they got it from.

there are 2 possibilities here:
1) some board members are just buying into the hype
2) they've been talked-up on Gibbs from someone in recruiting (or its coming from sticks etc..... someone in the know)

either way tis just posturing... I wouldn't make the quantom leap that the board are deciding who to draft.

In the wods of my mentor.........EXCELLENT

Woo Hoo!!!!!!!!!

YEAH BABY!!!!!!

We're Carlton and %$#^ the rest......

Awesome News......I'm pumped.

We need all the players to stick with us cos the board will go soon and there will be life at Carlton sooner rather than later.

Football Dept should be signing players by middle of year....not offer them cr@p and try to sign them just before trade week......club handled things badly.

Although credit to them on not going through with any bulltish trades.

simmo has a year to go on base salary and game payments.

If the club had any brains they would renegotiate the contract now. They would offer him around 240 to 250 k as goodwill for next year and reward him (with a 2 year extension)

but of course theyre thinking of the money ....

because theyre so short sighted.
that would be called list management.... we dont know what that is..

..it's good to have Thornts locked in for 3yrs.. ..by the time it's up we can only hope to be a better balanced team.. ..as for gettin' to work on other quality youngsters' contracts i agree.. ..but lets not get too far ahead, we must be sure it is quality first.. ..Simpson and Walker definately, do the same to Murphy and Kennedy as well..

What annoys me about that is where they spend the money. Kouta gets $300k for a farewell season, and Simmo is on base payments. Kouta should have been on $100k and the rest to Simmo.

Short term thinking is killing this club. Although the draft period was more long term, so I just pray that we've FINALLY recognised it and are fixing it.

Kouta should be opening another chapter to his life not playing football for us ...

We will get to Simmo when we get to him... in the meantime lets give Lance an extension....
