I don't know about Bradley. He was a great player but he's never really shown the commitment needed to be a AFL assistant coach in the past. But if he's got his priorities in order it'd be great to see him back down at the Blues.

I mean were bottom.. the game is big on modern day tactics.. and we brought in 3 new coaches... none of which have any runs on the board in modern day football.. and you think im disagreeing for the hell of it???

good point re Chris Bond. And I definitely agree with you that Pagan won't coach us again. I just can't conceive that he will make it through to round one of next season. In the slim chance that he does... he'll have three games to get it right or he'll be off. But I'd put money on him not being there in round one of 2007.

So, based on all of that - if the top job becomes available, do you think that the men who put their hand up for the St Kilda job - and who are inarguably men of modern day football - will also put their hand up for our job? Or are they now so locked into their assistant positions that we'll miss out again?

I would have liked to see more of a robust selection process undertaken - however having said that I dont have too much of problem with Ratten.

However Bradley's (although an on-field legend of the club) traditional pre-season training consisted of training off on his own until his contract was negotiated - so I fail to see what kind of value he will bring to our pre-season program.

Even if Pagan does fulfull the remaining two years of his contract, do any of the thee guys we have hired have the skill to be Coach in 2 years ?
It would not seem so.
It seems we are hiring assisatant coaches who will always be assistant coaches rather than people with intelligence and skill to push for the top job.
We cannot organize a pissup in a pub right now, let alone a football club. The vast majority of decisions seem either short sighted or a compromise.The club is operating like a bunny staring at headhghts

Unfortunately, I have to agree with Agro. Bradley's on-field ethic was exemplary, but his between seasons one isn't the sort of thing I want to see being instilled in our youngsters.

ratten sounds alright

Not really but I will. Don't really have an opinion on this to be honest. I've sort of realised over the last few years that regardless of what I think, how worked up I get or how badly I want Carlton to win, that it will have no impact on the actual outcome, so why get worked up about it? That's me anyway.

It was more a flippant comment based on the fact that no matter what the club do you (& many others) find fault with it. The glass is always half full.

Most of us spent all last week labelling the club shambolic for their approach re Thornton, and guess what, they were right? Perhaps they do know a thing or two about how the football world revolves?

It happens everywhere. Of course coaches don't want to employ Assistants that can step into their role, it places too much pressure on them and makes them easier to remove, particularly mid-season.

Think about it - how many 'newer' senior coaches have landed the role at the Club at which they were the assistant?

Connolly, Thompson, Clarkson, Lyon, Laidley, Worsfold? No, they all did apprenticeships elsewhere.

Synbad - we didn't go after Chris Bond because he has made it perfectly clear that unless the job is a top job - he's not interested.

And can you blame him - the Bulldogs after signing Aker firmed into 10-1 for the Premiership. Carlton slid out to 126-1. Being assistant coaches of consistent finals teams will land Chris Bond a head coach position one day.

Ratten has taken the advice of Parkin who said before you coach at the top you must be in charge of a team...hence his decision to leave Melbourne and go out to coach in the Eastern suburbs.

I would have thought he was a perfect candidate to get back to the club...an ambitious coach, a great footy brain, a genuine bloke and a Carlton man through and through.

The young group of players see the pictures of our greats @MC Labour...they are actually old enough to remember Brett Ratten play the game. They have been crying out for a couple of those former greats to come back to the club.

Look at it this way - Marc Murphy's education continues under one of the best centremen I've seen play the game. It can only be a good thing.

I understand what Synners and others are saying about hunting down the best options but it maybe, for Carlton, there aren't as many choices.

I am more than happy to have Ratts as an assistant to Denis. While I agree his coaching CV does not stack up against Bond or a number of others, he showed through his playing career his willingness to work and to make the most of his talents. If he is able instil this into our young playing group then we will improve. (And along the way I am pretty sure he can help with mid-field).

Importantly, Ratts is not going to be a yes-man for Pagan.

I was more dismayed that Pagan was allowed to bring in another ex-lackey in Crosisca than the possibility of Ratts joining.

There are a lot of things that need to happen at PP for the Blues to improve, one of those is a re-establishment (!) of a connection with our successful past. Ratts coming back in an official capacity should not only improve the MC but also start this process.

Look at sydney, they have two assistant coaches who were viewed as worthy of the top job (Lyon & Longmuire). It is no coincidence that they are successful right now. Because the coach is confident enough in his own ability, that he can hire good people. His focus is on club success and ubderstands that the best way to keep his job is through club success. A poor coach is focussed on keeping his job and so surrounds himself with people he does not view as a threat.

I don't necessarily disagree with you, I just think it's human nature that someone under the pump like Pagan will naturally choose an allie as opposed to someone gunning for his job. The difficulty for the club is finding the balance between telling the coach who will work with him without appointing someone that he can't work with, or letting him make the appointments himself.
