Wouldn't have a problem with either joining our coaching panel, especially RATTS. :-D

Synners you're right
Ratts may well be our saviour and god I hope he is for all our sakes. BUT, it's just another case of tapping someone on the shoulder without any semblance of process or scouring around to make sure we have the best candidate (Isn't that how we ended up with Denis PAymeaGAiN under the Elliott regime) For gods sakes Carlton, move with the f@#%ing times. This is big business, not just a Mens Club!!!!!!

People on here seem to now the process that went on in selecting our assitants (or the lack of it). Can they then enlighten the rest of us as to this process that was done in selecting them. This would include Crossica.

Fraser Brown if he gets into power wont have to advertise for the senior coaching role will he....just give it to his mate Brett Ratten....
I would like to see some process gone through where we do advertise, interview and do it a bit hard and dont take the easy options...

In an ideal world we would interview everyone and get the absolute best, but I don't think that is a viable option for most clubs. Usually there is (or should be) an exhaustive process for senior coach and then he hand picks his assistants. Ross Lyon may have a process but he wants SOS. Also current assistants would be loath to apply for the same job at another club in case they miss out. Brian Royal reckons going for senior coaach and missing out hurts your career, if you miss a job as an assistant at Carlton you're career is really in trouble. I don't like the idea of getting ex Carlton players per se but if they are also potentially good assistants then that's fine. We got Whoosha without exhaustive processes and so did WCE also Adelaide with Craig. Fact is many businesses headhunt talent rather than go through an application/ interview process. As I say, I think all clubs appoint assistants in a similar manner and I suspect the top assistants aren't going to go through a formal application / interview process for fear of missing out. I think Ratts might be good, but no to Braddles. I hope none of the posters bagging Ratts appointment and the process were in favour of Mitch taking the senior job just cause he was there and available.

Big article in the Age about comings and goings at clubs...a lot of assistants, footy managers and CEOs and I'm guessing few of those went through any rigourous process. (with the excepetion of Saints senior coach..of course)

I think it's often a "best fit" scenario and I think Ratts will suit that....Crossisca, I'm not so sure about...BUT...I don't think it's as negatrive as people say.

ps....what gerry atric said

Braddles sure knows how to get fit....and....stay fit!

And that is regardless of how he personally trained as a player; which was alone.

Any player who can rack up 375 games for Carlton over 16 years plus his Port Adelaide games before he arrived; must know about fitness.

He should be at the Club right now IMO.

Where did you hear that?
Lyon is on record as saying that any prospective assistant coaches at St Kilda will go through a comprehensive process including psychological testing.

What makes a good assistant coach? Is it because he has had a good apprenticeship at another AFL club? Is it because he has coached by himself outside of the AFL system? Is it because he was an outstanding player? Who knows? There is no science to the system. However, the senior coach should be able to make appointments without going through an exhaustive selection process (there just isn't the time to interview everyone).

Whether Ratts or Braddles have the smarts to be good assistants is anyone's guess. However, what they will bring is a connection to a successful Carlton era of the past and that is something that we have been sorely lacking in recent years.

[quote]Carlton coach Denis Pagan was on hand to officially welcome Brett back to Carlton today and is looking forward to having Brett’s input during 2007.

“I am sure Brett will make a big!!!! impact as part of our extended coaching panel in 2007 and I am sure his return to Carlton will be a real bonus for the Club. He has an outstanding knowledge of the game and he will play an important role in the continuing development of our team,â€

Nope. Bring him in as someone who can mentor the young blokes as to how they need to prepared and look after themselves by all means but not as a fitness coach. Just because he was in tune with his own body and mentally disciplined enough to stay so fit for his entire career doesnt mean he has the knowledge to run our fitness programme.

We need someone who is highly qualified and who understands enough about the human body to set measurable targets for each individually as well as a collective team target - not a printer or whatever Braddles is.

One of my all time fave players.
great footy smarts. Top bloke and a Carlton man to the core
This decision sits well with me.

The Dees were very happy with the work rats done esp bringing guys like Johnstone and Green to a more consistent midfield role.
Expect a harder working midfield if ratts is around

I'm happy also, interesting how the board feels about it though considering who his best mate is

Great News!............now we seem to be heading in the right direction....a great of our Club and not long out of the game (2003); and a thinker.

In 1999; David Parkin said that there was a "high correlation between the success of the pairing of Ratten and Fraser Brown and Carlton's wins"
