I'm happy also, interesting how the board feels about it though considering who his best mate is

Isn't this a Board appointment? :?

In which case, they'd be shooting themselves in the foot wouldn't they?

Question, given that Libba is currently our midfield coach, will Ratten take over that role from him, or will he look after the forwards or backs?

You would think that Ratten should be the midfield coach, so where does that leave Libba?

This decision sits well with me.

The Dees were very happy with the work rats done esp bringing guys like Johnstone and Green to a more consistent midfield role.

That's right. I remember an interview with Bruce after an impressive Melbourne win, and he accredited the presence of Ratts as midfield coach as being pretty influential on his personal game.

Nothing but positives from his stint at Melbourne.

Stoked. What a good day!

I don't think so. Ratts said in an interview with SEN that he would be forward coach. It was his wish as he wants to try something different then having the midfield - probably because he wants to be senior coach and wants a broader experience.

Synbad - we didn't go after Chris Bond because he has made it perfectly clear that unless the job is a top job - he's not interested.

And can you blame him - the Bulldogs after signing Aker firmed into 10-1 for the Premiership. Carlton slid out to 126-1. Being assistant coaches of consistent finals teams will land Chris Bond a head coach position one day.

Ratten has taken the advice of Parkin who said before you coach at the top you must be in charge of a team...hence his decision to leave Melbourne and go out to coach in the Eastern suburbs.

I would have thought he was a perfect candidate to get back to the club...an ambitious coach, a great footy brain, a genuine bloke and a Carlton man through and through.

The young group of players see the pictures of our greats @MC Labour...they are actually old enough to remember Brett Ratten play the game. They have been crying out for a couple of those former greats to come back to the club.

Look at it this way - Marc Murphy's education continues under one of the best centremen I've seen play the game. It can only be a good thing.

Thats exactly the way I am looking at it Doc

Could not agree more

Yes but we shouldn't have been in that position in the first place. Polly filler anyone?

Things seem to be looking up around the club atm.

Great to see Ratts back on board. I think he has a lot to offer our young group.

wow! makes me so happy! good luck ratts!
i'd have him as the midfield coach however.
might be time for libba to go. i orignally thought that having libba around would toughen up the team but IMO i dont think it has.
is there another assitant still to be appointed?
is there anymore news on braddles?

Well according to Denis in an interview on 3AW the process for finding a new assistant coach was indeed 'exhaustive'...so maybe we jumped to conclusions again? Or is Denis lying?

But let's assume for a minute that the process was not as exhaustive as we would have liked. Is this necessarily such a bad thing? Does every assistant coach ever brought to an AFL club have to undergo a thorough and gruelling process? I wouldn't have thought so. I believe that the "but did we go through an exhaustive process" argument is then in some ways a furphy which is only used when it suits, i.e. when posters don't approve of the new appointments for assistant coaches, such as Crosisca and Ratten. Let's say for example Carlton approached Michael Voss, who agreed to become an assistant at Carlton and the club duly signed him up. Judging by the level of enthusiasm which the potential appointment of someone like Voss generated over the course of the season on this forum, would we really care that he might not have been subject to a rigorous process but was instead head-hunted by the club on the basis of a genuine belief in the values/ideas etc that Voss could bring to the club? My point is that I believe the argument is only used by posters when it suits them.

Anyway well done Ratts, good to have ya back! :-D

Another piece of the saga of the great fall then unanticipated, unexpected rebirth of Carlton falls into place.

The very old coach departs in controversial circumstances and a new young and untried coach is appointed. No one thinks much of this beyond the usual congratulations and bonhomie.

But in the first year of a very new and quite young coach, a year during which there is a terrible and quite brutal war raging in the world, a conflict which affects many many people, one bright spot is afl football, and it is Carton that shows an unexpected and quite remarkable on field improvement.

We win sufficient games during the season to eventually achieve a low spot in the final 8, but importantly, we are in the finals....

The best that could be said of this future season is that it is a 'team building' year as not a great deal was expected of it for us.

Although far better than the spoon years, this season by Carltons lofty historic standards is not great, very much a hot and cold year with wins followed by losses and then a win again.

But one thing is clear. The horror years are now a receding picture of a terrible car accident that is passed on the highway but gets smaller and smaller as we momentarily glance in the rear vision mirror going forward.

Of far more importance though is the panoramic view through the windscreen.

With the new young coach at the helm, Carlton shows steady improvement but the real surprise comes during the finals, when our beloved Carlton team suddenly and very unexpectedly finds a few extra gears....

A football caller in a match in this future season excitedly called a goal kicked by a player streaming forward from defence, launching a beautiful kick from the right hand flank for a marvellous goal - his name was Power

Good to see Ratts back at the club, while his CV might not be the best i believ he has the potential to one day achieve that.

I remember reading an article about a former player who was talking about Ratts, he was saying how competative he was and that no matter what it was he would always win. Immovable from the table tennis table down at Princess park back in the days  ..

That's what we need, no not a table tennis champ, but a massive competative spirit........
