Blues keep youngsters, welcome back 'oldie'.
Quote:
Russell, who had wanted away to Port Adelaide, began to doubt the strength of Port's affections. He agreed yesterday to a new two-year contract that will be signed officially this morning.

The homesick 19-year-old South Australian's decision, after a coffee and 90-minute discussion with coach Denis Pagan earlier in the day, was confirmed in a statement that also detailed new two-year deals with Simon Wiggins and Luke Blackwell.

"Denis got Jordan excited about Carlton again," said Russell's manager, Rick Olarenshaw.

Signatures instead of resignations; the jailbreak appears to be over and, importantly, Carlton's first pick in the pre-season draft is again available to bring an experienced player in rather than bind an existing player to service.

"Jordan's decision and that of Bret Thornton, who have both decided to remain at Carlton, confirms that the position we took during the exchange period last week to retain our young players was in the best interests of the Carlton Football Club," said chief executive Michael Malouf, who was within hours making another symbolic announcement — the return of club great Brett Ratten.

Well done to Denis Pagan. Helps the mighty CFC once again.

Good to see sandwiches are no longer needed.

Wonder what the coffee was? Ristretto, Flat White?

What was he thinking?

If anyone thinks that our brilliant past isn't a powerful tool have got rocks in their head. This is the greatest club in football's in history. The kids should have that drummed into them from day 1 and never cease.

Now isn't their a preacher in the house that can help these kids with their journey to blue heaven salvation.

Thornton was scum.

Russell was a mummy's boy we were better off without.

A few days later and they are both hero's.

Gotta love the sheep.

May I remind you of your own parable:

THE PRODIGAL SON. (LUKE 15:11-32).

Won't quote it too you because I'm sure you know how it goes.

Good point!

Melbourne's last premiership was in 1964. It took us 15 years to catch up to them, when we were 4 behind, and in the next 15 years we moved 4 up on them. In the lat 11 years we haven't moved, been at the bottom and they're playing finals. Yeah things can change.

We must use our history however to our advantage, as a foundation of our greatness, our character and our charter, and as a tool to create desire in players to appreciate the opportunity to play at the club.

The club itself has to match their current operation with the strengths of our history....united, flag focussed, financial strength, great players, great brand, loyalty.

We have a lot of areas that need tidying up to match our past greatness.

We can though as long as we as a club are focussed on these important facets and ensure we achieve them....one thing we can't lose is our history of great players. We must ensure to add continue to add to the already impressive list...and we slowly, but surely are with Fevola, Murphy, Walker, Simpson, Gibbs and maybe even Setanta, Aisake and Waite....

So we should have been them wishing them well as their managers tried to engineer their departure from the club for nothing

Yeah, this guy who's pretty sure he's in the know was saying that Vicki had had it with the WWE and wanted out, and that the whole Guerero family were falling apart at the seams… turns out this guy got it wrong again… but most were expecting that… he normally gets about 1% of things right - trust me, 1%ers are my forte...

This is a PM right?

Does anyone else find it strange that Russell caved so easily?

Last week he was pretty much going back home and there was nothing that would change his mind. All of a sudden he signs for 2 years and is staying.

What was said to him that changed his mind?

Did Malouf or Smorgo have a word in his ear and told him that Pagan would be gone soon enough?

The conspiracy theorists will say yes.

Realistically, he probably didn't want to go to Essendon* or North...

The kid is 20 young and impressionable and Denis spent 30 minutes with him one on one stroking his ego (probably the total amount of one on one time he has spent with the Senior Coach since he arrived at Carlton).

Denis obviously didn't take him to Longrain. Those bench seats they have would've reminded Russell why he wanted out in the first place.

Not strange - while Thornton was on the way out Carlton couldn't provide the same threat of taking Russell in the PSD. With Thornton signing with Carlton he didn't have much choice.

His mind may have been made up prior to this though. Russell seemed more interested in getting back to Adelaide rather than just leaving Carlton. When Port didn't offer anything of great value it became pretty clear that he wasn't going to make it to Port. Even if we hadn't taken him in the PSD he would have ended up at another Melbourne based club.

PJ, I reckon one plausible scenario is this:

That Russell would prefer to go home, but isn't as homesick as was made out. When the Thornton saga happened, his manager and Port Adelaide thought that CFC might cave and trade him rather than risk losing two players. They felt we might do a deal (as it was we would have accepted a second round pick) rather than risk the scenario where we picked Thornton up in the PSD and had to let Russell slip through.

Once Thornton was signed, CFC would have told him to sign or else we'd pick him up in the PSD anyway.

Unfortunately that is a plausible scenario that doesn't imply the impending removal of DP. Of cause this is all just speculation on my part.

Both got reasonably inexperienced managers as well.

Olarenshaw and McConville

I hope Jordan realises how far his stocks have fallen. He would've felt pretty good being taken in the top 10 two years back - now he's worth less than a pick in the 30s.

He needs to get his arse moving or risk exiting the same way Brennan has. If these next two years aren't any better he'll be back playing SANFL befor he turns 23.
