Amazes me that we could too, we're pretty [REDACTED] at the moment.

More 'warm and fuzzies'.

On a seperate matter, The Red Wiggle (Murray) sounds remarkably like Denis Pagan!

Kudos to T-Bird (was calling him B-Turd a couple of weeks ago! :-D ) in this piece for being honest and forward about the offer from Hawthorn.

I don't think that he could have said it any better.

The bit about Setanta was particularly interesting. Well done!

"It wasn't the biggest factor, but the package from Hawthorn initially was a lot better. As time went on they (Carlton) matched it.

So in the end it was about the money and a 3 year contract.

Well, I was one who thought it was a Pagan problem; I'm glad to be corrected because it was plain for all to see that if Carlton matched the offer, then why did he not sign earlier?

Sounds like his manager is a bit of a goose. And unfortunately my respect for him has gone down a bit.

The Board looks bad as well; why didn't we sign him up for the initial asking price (as quoted by the -Ox-) of 275K? We're probably paying him more than that now.

It's called negotiation.

The days of players just naming their price and the club agreeing top it are OVER and thank christ for that. If it means some of these soft nancy boys walk out, then f#$k them. We must never be dictated to by player managers like we used to be. It got us into strife with paying $1m over the salary cap for a wooden spoon team a few years back.

Problem Dukes, if we offered similar to what Hawthorn offered, and TBird's initial price was about 25-40K lower, then we've stuffed up the negotiation.

We've signed him up on better terms than he initially asked for. In other words, we've caved him into his demands and given him extra!

Don't let that get in the way of your argument...

I was always a bit skeptical as to the suggestion that Thornton's problem was with Denis. Since Denis has been at the club Bret has never been dropped when he could have been once or twice. Denis has had a lot of faith in Bret and Bret has returned that faith by on the whole performing well. So I don't see why Bret Thornton on his own as a person would have any reason not to like Denis, that's not to say that other players don't possibly have reasons for disliking Denis but it always seemed a bit strange with regard to Bret.

So much for their denials that they didn't approach him, the above quote shows that they 'entertained' him way before the trade week - wasn't he a contracted player at this time?

My understanding is that it had nothing to do with Pagan whatsoever but all to do with Hawthorn's approach and our lack of attention at the right time to Thornton's desire to sign up. I'd like to think that we realised that he had some currency and we were fishing for an early pick, but I think on balance it had everything to do with 'eyes off the ball'.

I hope we plant our eyes firmly back on the ball with Murphy, Kennedy, Simpson etc :-D
