Just because Rod Butters places his beleif in 'The Process', psychometric testing and panel interviews does not necessarily mean that this is or should be the be all and end all of recruiting assistant coaches. It has been my experience in the industries that I have worked in that generally if somebody is well known and respected within an industry, and they become available it is good you need somebody like that, and they come available, it is good practice to go and get them.

Hiring well respected people who are a known quantity or are well recommended by trusted sources is generally better than hiring unknowns who do a good job at the interviw or test. This is especially true in smaller professions where most everyone is known in some capacity by the industry, like the AFL.

I find it amazing that people would prefer to put their trust in a contracted headhunter/psychometric testing/board interviews over the respected judgement of industry professionals.

Just because Rod Butters beleives in 'The Process' doesnt mean we all have to!!!

I agree.
In this industry, gut instinct and ggod fortune are often what picks a good coach.
case in point, JohnElliot head hunts john Worsfold as an asistant against parkins wishes. Turns out the biggest mistake was letting him go. The same John Elliot (at the behest of others it must be said) anoints Brittain as the senior coach and that was a disaster.

if the st Kilda Model was so successful, why have they got rid of every coach appointed in the last 4 years

I think Braddles will be working a a development role with the young'uns particulary but not limited to the midfielders. He will be part time but involved on matchdays, the main training sessions and the match committee (I think that is basically everything)

Another media report, from the AGE this time:

http://www.realfooty.theage.com.au/real ... 21014.html

Interesting point that the club still have one full-time AC to appoint soon. 8)

St. Kilda are bunnies but at least they're willing to acknowledge that outsiders can provide fresh ideas.

Their model is not what I would want to see and I haven't heard anyone else calling for fluffy psych tests either.

What I have heard people calling for and what I agree with is to look at half a dozen people who fall into the category of "well respected people who are a known quantity or are well recommended by trusted sources" and giving them a serious interview process.

Bradley and Ratten may turn out to be inspired choices and the greatest assistant coaches of all time and if that's the case then they would most likely have got the gig with a decent process in place anyway. Unfortunately at the moment the appointments look more like a board propping itself up in readiness for a challenge at the next AGM.

Pagan was allowed one choice and he went for an old ally. The board are making the other appointments and they've gone for two "favourite sons". Strange coincidence?

All three appointments are political and whilst I'll be very pleased if Bradley and Ratten do well back at Carlton I fear it will be in spite of the way they were hired rather than because of it.

I htink some on here are underestimating the depth of knowledge and professionalism Bradley and Ratts can deliver..
As well as a 'winners' mentality, and the fact that they played a combined 600 games for this club, I dont think we can go wrong.

Political or non political, Im worried about our fortunes in 07,08 and beyond, and I think the assistans nominated can certainly smooth the path over those seasons.

im really stoked about some of the moves we have made recently. Staying strong over the Thornton and Russell trades, getting Ratts, and now Bradles, im really excited that they can not only bring a great understanding for the game, but a real good team bond and relationship amongst the playing group. CARLTON CULTURE!

The Blue Baggers style will be there and have a lot more passion within the players .. these are some of the greatest players that ever played ... I believe Ratten will become a full time coach one way or another because he has the brains ... Ratten is a smart bloke

It should be noted in the Age article that Pagan sounded out Bradley for the position....

I'm still laughing....interesting appointment, not sure of the politics involved or Bradley's abilities so I'll keep an open mind...but I still think Denis is warming the seat for Brett Ratten...

The important thing here is a living breathing Carlton Culture.

Having icons of the club around the young players is probably one of the best psychological methods that might inspire improved on field performances.

Why was Bradley appointed? - yes, politics and membership may have played a role, but maybe Denis is doing a bit of re inventing here.

It would be harder for players to hate Denis, as I am told that they do, if Denis's coaching staff is one that is weighted heavily with Carlton legends.

After back to back wooden spoons, theres not a lot more Denis would have in reserve to convince the board that he should stay.

Despite the denials, the AFL was his saviour.

But the slack cut to him in that deal wouldnt last much more than say the first half of season 2007 - and thats being very generous.

Theres lots of possible scenarios here, but the good news though is that short of a board challenge this year, if Denis is say, sacked mid season in 2007 because we are 7 and 1 (and I hope we arent) - we probably have a very good caretaker coaching staff to guide us through the remainder of next season.

Who cares what Braddles contract negotiation were. Will it impact on out kids? I doubt it . The bloke may have been seen to hold the club at ransom but the fact remains he kept himself in tip top condition training by himself until negotitations were settled. The other fact is at the end of the day he did have better offers, those in particular to return to S.A. yet he remained a one club player to the end of his career. He stikes me as a man of his word. I dont want him as a fitness coach becuase I believe just because you can get yourself in tip top condition does'nt mean you can get a whole side that way.

The things he can impart is the knowlegdge of how a professional athlete should prepare himself. How to consistantly run rings around youropposition, even at 37 plus years old! Even more importantly he can offer advice on how to get into your opponents mind. We all have seen Nicky Winmars brain explosion when Frenchy got the better of him and also accept the fact that it was Braddles that let him in on how to do it. Shit when was the last time we exploited anyones weekness? Also appologies to Nicky becuase he is probably my favourite non Carlton player of all time and I was upset at what went on - but hey @#$%&! it hes a better person for it(I hope :-D ). However back to reality the last few year have shown me no one shed tears for Carlton other then Carlton supporters so the rest can go @#$%&! "em selves!"

Sure he didn't stick it out at other appointments, but were any of them at Carlton?

I wonder if Libba will resort to his old tricks in the box and try to stop Bradley getting to Pagan first to suggest a change in the midfield. At least the dynamics in the box willl be interesting next year and I'd love to be a fly on the wall.

One more assistant to come on board?

Mitchell good as gone, will the new assistant also coach the Bullants?

Hope Fev is getting into Voss over in Ireland about joining the Blues.

I reckon Mitchell is gone. Think about it, they are waiting until he returns from holiday before making an announcement. If he was staying, they'd just announce it. If he was going, they'd want to tell him before it was made public, for the sake of good form. The only other option is that they haven't decided and want to talk to him before making the decision, but i reckon it's odds on he's gone.

I've been pretty negative lately, but my heart just swelled about an inch all round with this announcement. The membership renewal's going in the post on Monday!!

This is exactly what our new young midfield need to move them forward. It has always puzzled me why none of our ex champions ever went on to be assistant coaches as so many of the good coaches come from successful teams and we've had plenty of them. maybe this is politicing, maybe the wounds are closing over, who knows!!

In the meantime I'll just be happy that we will have one of the best ever midfield players mentoring our young draftees. Craig Bradley as your mentor, what's not to love for a young Bryce Gibbs!!!

You want to talk about a winning culture, Bradley and Ratten are 2 of the best preparers ever to pull on a Blue Guernesy. Neither accepted 2nd best from themselves or their team-mates.

Also great to see Braddles highlighting about how we are his club. Somebody, just for a sh1t stir, slip on over to the Port Adelaide board on BF and post a highlighted caption of how their Team of the Century hero has come back to his rightful home.

Second effort you hit the nail right on the head.In the teaching caper it would be worth the selection panel to invite all the staff of the school the applicant is at down the local for a few. Just ask the obvious question" Well what are they like" You will get the answer in 2 seconds and not have to worry about written applications, job interviews and referees.

Some people who interview well end up being shit at the job because they are good with the bullshit in the interview.

Ratten has a good reputation with tactics. Bradley was the ultimate professional footballer. There were a few issues when he left the club. He has waited for the dust to settle. I reckon this is a better coaching panel and DP wont have the same clout as before.

Despite the hair loss I reckon Braddles could still pull the booties on Looks fit.
