At the end of 1972, as a reward for being premiers the Blues were given a world tour which consisted of exhibition matches against an Australian 'All Stars' team in three locations, London, Singapore and Athens.

I've only done a little bit of research on the net and have found very little (next step is to search the newspapers and my books).

But I was wondering if anyone from TC happened to be in Athens in 1972 and knows anything about the game, maybe a relative went to see it? Maybe you have some info about the game in a book?

Any information would be much appreciated.

The trip was initially an Orlando all-stars trip put together by the chop-stick entrepeneur George Harris.

The trip was to go to Moscow but due to a cock-up was rescheduled to Athens. All this following London.

The game was described as hilarious by Big John in the book of the same name.

On arrival(several hours before)it was discovered that there were o goal posts. The pitch was a soccer field 60 yards by 90 yards and reportedly goals were kicked from CHB.

"The umpire was Don Jolley who reportedly entered into the spirit of the thing to such an extent that at times it was difficult to tell if he was laughing or whistling".

I remember reading about it in "The Herald" - (a long time ago) - the crowd was quite small and it was compared (by a local reporter) that it was not much bigger than they would have got for a mid-week match.

I reckon if they played it now - they would get a much bigger crowd, mainly of ex-pats, most whom travel over to Greece in the summer time to help out in their relative's restaurants in the Plaka. :P

I wonder if Andreas Demitriou saw the game, if he made the journey from Nicosia to Athens that is.

Preferably on foot without the aid of a breathing apparatus.

Ah yes..........

i remember it like it was yesterday............!

the streets were lined with children......their screams filled
the air with colourful sounds.....whilst the sky was a haze from the
souvlaki bee bee quu's precariously positioned on the
sidewalks........!

only 50 drachma each they were..........an extra 10 for "put sauce".....!

driving through Athens in the specially hired taxi......they were
greeted with........."yia sas palikaria.........YIA SAS"........("hello
there big guys..........HELLO THERE"...).........!

things went very well for a few days......but then.........a shadow was cast
over the whole trip........something terrible had happened.......!

Turkey decided they wanted a bit of Cyprus........maybe
even all of it..............!

surely this couldn't be happening...........tanks began to
roll down the streets..........kids on bikes rode around screaming....
"polemos...........PO-LE-MOOOOS".......("war........WAR-AR-ARR").......
grandmothers cried whilst sitting by the radio in the dark.......
Mothers waited to hear from their sons..........the jets
were getting lower and lower in the sky...............!

surely this couldn't be happening.............!

"what do we do" they thought............should they catch the first
plane out of there.........?

should they head north.............?

NORTH....to Bulgaria.........?

as it turns out..........they stayed..........and the three months
passed with less pain.........!

but for a short period there.........my family and i were wondering
if we would ever get back home.............!

kindest regards tommi

hey Jarr.....sorry mate.......i know nothing of this 72 trip by the boys.......
but i'm familiar with some of the happenings in 74.........!
