I think you're thinking the ARU, not NRL, chyna. But I hope the whisper is from a rock-solid source, as it would be a huge get for us, especially with an eye towards sponsors.

Wikipedia: John O'Neill

Why do you say that, kk?

Being a very average 'politician'/architect is no grounding to run a football club.

So he can organise a billion dollar event as big as the Commonwealth games but not run a $20M footy club?

Yep, he organised the Commonwealth Games all on his own, had nobody holding his hand like the very experienced Ron Walker or a whole committee that knew what they were doing. Roll your eyes all you want but don't give him too much credit.

He doesn't have the business nous or background to be the person we want.

 Never heard of a CEO who does all the work?? Name a few for me.

The buck stopped with him, if the event failed he would get the blame.

True, he would have copped it and probably has been lucky that he seems to have got away with this crap about coming under budget and now spending the excess.

However the fact that he would have copped it doesn't mean that he is the reason for the sucess of it. Surely you would agree that Ron Walker and the Commonwealth Games committe were the key in any success?

Ron Walker and commitee, sub commitee and volunteers did most of the games work. Otherwise how could it have proceeded if there was a change in goverment in the timebetween the granting and staging.

The figurehead in our case needs to be a gun at many levels.

There is a big difference in running somenthing with public money as opposed to a finite buget.

Really people - Justin Madden - as nice a bloke as he is...couldn't run a bath. Believe me - I know...Sports Ministers get briefed on what is happening...they memorize this in order to speak to the press and (sometimes) answer questions (most of them are requested by Ministers Cheifs of Staff before they are asked them - although not SEN)...

...they also open things like skateparks - give speeches (not written by them - Justin rehearsas these in the car on the way to the event...sometimes) and sign off on many things. And that's about it.

So that's an emphatic 'NO' to Justin Madden. Hell of a nice guy...not CEO material.

So CEO's never get 'briefed' either.

 This is hilarious, just because he is a politician he is being discounted.

Talk about myopic.

So he sat there flogging himself off while everyone else organised a very successful games. I bet he had a big hand in it. Part of business nous is being able to delegate and well as doing your own job. I'm not sure you'd really know if he had the business nous or not. I know which job would be easier.

Geez - I can't believe that some people would even contemplate Justin Madden could do a CEO's job!

Ok - here's the breakdown of how the Comm.Games were organised...Justin Madden is the Minister of Sport and Recreation - the public Servants who work under him work for Sport and Recreation Victoria (DVC) and did NOT work for M2006 - the body that ran and coordinated the Commonwealth Games. M2006 CEO was a guy called John Harnden. He reported to M2006 Chairman, Ron Walker - and sometimes - they reported to the Minister.

Naive to think that Primary School Teacher turned footballer turned State MP could all of a sudden turn his hand to becoming a CEO. Malouf's replacement will come from within the CEO / Managing Director ranks of business.

Maybe we should target the finance minister then or some other senior pollie elected by nameless backroomparty factions for a seat. His profile got him his place on the ticket not some long standing history of business acumen
