Quote:
The former North Melbourne wingman played in the infamous Carlton-North game of 1987, an event dubbed the new Battle of Britain after a rolling brawl erupted.

The game degenerated into constant sniping and fighting after then North player Alastair Clarkson broke Ian Aitken's jaw behind play.

"(Carlton's) Jimmy Buckley belted me in that game," Demetriou said, still indignant at the thought.

"He smacked me in the mouth after the big fight started. I said, 'What are you doing?' and I got the 'If one of our blokes goes down, one of yours goes down, too' response.

For those that have not read it, this is a great first hand account of the game in 1987: http://www.fullpointsfooty.net/nirvana_ ... ined_2.htm

I always loved Jimmy B, but he has gone up another notch in my estimation :)

By the way is this

Quote:
at this point Alastair Clarkson, seeing red, sprinted across and felled Aitken with an enormous king hit from behind.

Hawthorn's current coach?

Who cowardly ended Ian Aitken's career - was never the same player after that, having won the VFL Best First Year Player Award in 1987 (equivalent to the Rising Star Award today).

There is only one Carlton player who has the honour of being suspended for striking Demitrispew.

Gold star to the first person to name the player.

After Clarkson the weasel had hit Aitken, Rhys and Johno chased this bloke all over the park belting crap out of him.

David Parkin apparently at one stage threw his phone at North coach John Kennedy in anger at the violence that North were keen on.

And doesn't that comment just sum Jabba up. He simply doesn't seem to understand the "all for one" ethics of a football club and typically sooks "but i didn't do anything".

He must have been a top club men!

Jars, not sure I agree with the write up. I was sure Aitken was king hit as he tackled a North player in play rather than in a punch on.

That would have been Robert Walls. He also told Rhys and Johnno that Clarkson wasn't to walk off the field.

That's not my write-up. Done by someone else for fullpointsfooty. My memory of the vision of the incident is the same as yours, Aitken had laid a tackle and Clarkson ran in with the gutless king hit from behind.

I knew there was a reason he was my fav player for a couple of years back in the 80's.

I thought everyone knew this and that's why Luke didn't get the Rising Star nomination this year?

If memory serves me wright Clarkson was deliberatley left on the field by his coach to teach him a lesson.

And at one stage Rhys was chasing him behind the goal posts like a game of chasey.

God love you Jimmy for getting to hit the prick..
