It's obvious isn't it ??

Wayne Blackwell should be the next Carlton president and Jimmy Buckley the Chairman of Selectors.

I was there for this game. I missed the entire season - the only other game I saw was a practice match in mid Feb. So, being in London, I made sure I went along and dragged in a couple of friends as well. One of them now live out here and follows us still.

I remember the Clarkson incident quite clearly: I doubt I will ever forgive him for ruining Ian Aitken's career. Aitken was tackling a North bloke and Clarkson king hit him from behind. Aitken went down like a rock and didn't get back up. Our guys were not overly focused as it was, but most spent the rest of the day trying to thump Clarkson (who barely got a kick - like most of his career).
I heard afterwards that Robert Walls asked the players to make sure Clarkson didn't walk off: he ran off, fearing retribution and deserving it.
In many ways we failed. For all the brawls we did not KO Clarkson and barely made enough contact to get reports, for all the efforts of Jimmy Buckley and co. We didn't win the game (the worst thing of the lot). We didn't get much idea as to young future stars, although a number of youngsters and recruits played. Ian Aitken never recovered his confidence.
It was a disaster.

Absolutely he stole Aitken's career - who was as I mentioned voted Recruit of the Year in 1987.

Its ironic in a way that Aitken's career at Carlton was determined by post season exhibition games.

After the disasterous 1986 Grand Final where we were thumped by Hawthorn, we actually played a post season Exhibition Game against Hawrthorn in Canada (I think it was in the Toronto Superdome - which is essentially a baseball stadium) so on this elongated weird shaped ground - which as an interesting piece of trivia should be noted was the first time a game of AFL Footbal was played indoors - good bet winner if people say it was Docklands.

Anyway I digress - Aitken was a reserve player and was picked to play in this game and was put on Jason Dunstall and the Match Committee were very impressed with his efforts - which resulted in his debuting the following season in 1987 where he became regular fixture at Centre Half Back and part of the Premiership Side in his first season.

So in fact his career was kick started by a post-season exhibition game and essentially finished in a post-season exhibition game by that low life slug Alistair Clarkson.

But there was a game that was played in the Toronto Superdome in Canada - but it wasn't Carlton -v- Hawthorn, could have been Geelong and Hawthorn, does anybody know. :?

The only Toronto games have been:

1988 Toronto Canada Collingwood 18.11 (119) d. Hawthorn 15.15 (105)
1989 Toronto Canada Melbourne 14.19 (103) d. Geelong 13.12 (90)

I still remember it clearly.

Aitken was one of my favourite players and I cannot remember seeing a more disgraceful or cowardly act on a sporting field.

I have detested that prick Clarkson ever since....

Jimmy B obviously had a great sense of a man's character.

He obviously knew Two-metres-o-poo was a prick back then.

Clarkson = My Avatar ...........F@#%^! Dog.

I too was at the game and the function to launch it.It was very clear that the Blues were still in "holiday " mode following the GF.

North on the other hand seemed to have a terrible chip on their shoulder and clearly resented Carltons success both on and off the field.

At the dinner on the Friday prior to the game, the overwhelming impression was of a surly group of individuals who had, as a club, a massive inferiority complex.

It was no surprise that they stacked on a "blue" two days later..

As for Clarkson,he never received the negative publicity due him for his infamous piece of thuggery that put paid to an extremely promosing career!

*bump* a disgraceful, cowardly act by the little mongrel.

...just on the Spew a while back on Fox Footy they played an old game - can't remember what vintage - and it was a joy to see him running around ineptly with Rhys absolutely slaughtering him.

If memory serves me, as soon as he hit Aitken, Johnno was straight in giving him a right royal whack.
