Sticks is the newer version of Wes Lofts
A poor mans Wes Lofts..
Wes Lofts in the early eighties was nothing like Sticks...
Wes Lofts as a footballer was in the Jack Dyer vernacular "only a good ordinary player" and was regularly pantsed by the full forwards of the day, in 1969 Grand Final Billy Barrott ran amok on Wes after half-time and essentially won the game for Richmond when shifted to Full Forward.
Wes's on-field tough guy reputation is not borne out - when you talk to the people that know.
I think its fair to say the comparisons between Lofts and Kernahan need to be made in two categories:
1. On field - Sticks clearly superior
2. Off Field - I think the jury was ready to read out their verdict a long time ago.
But off-field is a different story and his time as Chairman of Selectors and match day tactician are second to none:
- who was sitting in the coaches box during the 1979 Grand Final whilst Jezza was on the field - Wes Lofts
- who was sitting next to David Parkin in the Coaches Box during the 81 and 82 Grand Final - Wes Lofts
- who was sitting next to Robert Walls in the Coaches Box during the 1987 Grand Final - Wes Lofts.
Off field very astute was Wes Lofts.
