Once again, can't help myself getting philosophical again...

Firstly, I should say that I haven't read the whole dialogue that precedes this...I'm here to discuss football and my footy club, I'm not interested in reading people having a go at each other off, whoever they are, and for whatever the reasons. So I tend to just skip over it the instance I see something that resembles such a dialogue.

Having said that...let me say this...

We may believe that a particular term or phrase, be it 'paddy', 'wog', 'dirty Abo', 'jewing money', or whatever, is not offensive. That doesn't mean that it is not considered to be offensive to the person to whom it is directed. Now of course, we can't know all the terms and labels that different people take offence to, but once we are alerted to the fact that something is offensive to someone, then we must accept that and respect that, and cease to use that term.

It is the same argument that Sam Newman used in the issue with Nicky Winmar on the Footy Show. He kept saying that he only meant it as a joke, that he was having a bit of fun, that he didn't mean it to be offensive. Yet he completely missed the point that through out Winmar's life, he had been subjected to racial discrimination, and that regardless of the intention of the deliverer, it still hurt.

Some people may feel that all this political correctness is over the top, but political correctness has been embraced by our society because it serves to protect individuals and groups from discrimination and the painful memories of discrimination. And we only have to compare our own country with other countries on this planet, to see the value of such practices.

Once again, the formula is simple...if we exercise political correctness, the world is a better place.

i disagree. you are just buying into it all, those terms are worlds apart, and society forms pockets when you keep it all in the shade. like people are still saying the same stuff regardless, all political correctness's is doing is hiding it., no matter how politically correct you are people will always be the same, and protecting people may just be hurting them more.

How so Dane? The AFL decided it would stamp out racism in football, that they wouldn't tolerate it (ie become politically correct) and not only is the game better off for it, but it has become a leader in changing the attitudes of people in this country. Of course it doesn't rid of all racist beliefs, but it goes along way to improving the situation. Aside from anything else, it has made racism in football at AFL level 'uncool', just as smoking cigarettes in this country is in many circles not the 'cool' thing that it used to be. And that helps.

can i just a question. Do we all remember a couple of months ago when Sam Newman punched that the guy in the face at the world cup function and yet it was done and dusted after a day and not a big deal was made out of it, but yet all Fev does is get this pussy in a headlock and there making it out to be like he killed the poof. I reckon its the name, FEVOLA, thats one this is such a big issue. And i got say im disappointed in Demetriou, he has left Fev out to dry. Demetriou is just taking care of himself and the AFL name by saying that teh players didn't get bagged. He is just worried about the irish reputation instead of taking care of one of his own. flower sake all these guys should get over themselves. i saw the footage today and this is NOT a big deal.

I saw the footage....mountain out of a mole hill!!

Headlock...so what?

What an absolute joke the media are in all this, and as for Demetriou, he should take them time to collate all the facts and then say something...he can't say that there were no racial remarks made towards the Aussies, after all he isn't their eyes and ears....he was out gambling.

Stick up for your team Demetriou.

Help put out the fire, and don't throw more fuel to it.

Let it settle you fool.

Why give the barman the fame he so desires. He should be made to look like a flower...it takes 2 to tangle.....and just say what it was...just a headlock on a big mouth.

Thats it mate, it's in the name... Sammy Newman doing anything doesn't rate a mention 'cos the guy (as funny as he is), is a spanka... Fevola doing anything, especially since he is known as a marquee player - means news, and news that will sell papers and get people watching the 5 o'clock TEN drivel. I take it all with a grain of salt, and only care to see if the CFC react to this... would be good mind you, if Fev (although not due back for 2 weeks), makes an appearance at training on Monday, just to show he's getting on with things... for now I can picture him sitting on his own in a bar in some obscure 'lil country getting smashed and watching foreign TV with English subtitles... :)

And just quickly, does the Spew have info/has he interviewed the Aboriginal players in the IR team? If not, then how the f&#$ does he know they weren't racially vilified?? Any excuse for me to think that he's just having a free craic *lol sry* at Fev/Carlton so I can berate him for the spanka he is... :P

Peace out, and as far as I'm concerned *'cos I'm a nice fella*, come back Brendan - all is forgiven...!

Yobbos are yobbos no matter where they come from.

I can't see how anything that's happened over there is a reflection on Irish people any more than the crap that went on at the cricket last summer or whatever.

Beano - I am sorry you have felt the need to defend your kith and kin over this. Most of us know the Irish are good folk.

I just hope that we (as in Carlton) haven't lost (m)any potential Irish fans over the whole thing.

I think Fevolution has forgotten his age and thinks it helps his argument to talk like that. :?

I'm sorry Beano, I see that some of these comments have upset you, but please take it to PM's or talk to the moderators about it.

Don't prolong the issue and give it more than it deserves by retaliating in the forum. Then the molehill will just escalate to a volcano.

Political correctness has gone way over the top recently. Racial groups use the slightest excuse to pipe up. Nicki Winmar was satire, how else to you portray him, as a white man? There was nothing racist in it whatsoever. He needs to get over himself. In other words he wasn't discriminated against, which is basically the more line to racism. Muslims......we have to follow their rules and laws if we go there and it still seems, at times, we have to follow them when we're here too. Large Council gatherings, where they ban pork in sandwiches, because there's one Jew there. If they come to our country they follow our rules and culture as we should if we go there. Pauline Hanson was villified as being racist when all she wanted was equality, not reverse racism. That was basically programmed by the press causing all sorts of hysteria. We bend over backyards for these groups because of the fear of treading on toes. If a white person get villified, nothing happens, why? I'm not convinced it's been embraced by our society, it's just something we are programmed to do by the media, like refugee detention centres. For all the publicity they receive, polls show that 80-90% of people agree with them. That's rarely mentioned because it lacks controvesy and doesn't sell papers.

While I believe in some sort of political correctness, it has to be equal for all ...black, white, yellow, pink, Jews, muslims etc...with no discriminarion, or favourtism, either way. At the present it's way over the top.

Anyway, back to the fottball. Sack Pagan, Sack Smorgon, go Blues!!!!!!

fevolution a touch far mate, but the barman should be ready for some personal attacks as it appears he has blatently lied about the proceedings. i think the guy is just trying to cash on his brush with greatness, i mean he works in a pub... making a big deal out of something you started for cash would seem like a good idea.

the main problem is the media though... but its the off season so this is a big story. fev acted on being provoked. and didnt take it far enough even to be sent home for the IR series.

i have no problem with fev captaining carlton.
really its the AFLs fault they handled the situation extremely poorly, and their CEO proved once again that he hates Carlton.

and didn't he then add that it caused bruising?

The video would seem to support Fevs explanation and disprove his 'brush'

"Fevola-gate"

What a joke. Why do the media insist on slapping "gate" on the end of everything?
