Well,

that looks like one candidate gawn.

Does this make it more likely that a younger player (under the 24yo rule) will get the job?

Or is it now a race between Big Red and Stevo?

I would actually love Walker or Simpson to take the captaincy.....I doubt it would happen though.....

I just think Lance won’t get better, so we need to bite the bullet and get a 10 year captain, who will be a perfect leader in a few years when we are a force again.....

Murphy will be the captain as soon as he is ready .... he is the best talent in the blues to take the reigns on post the Blues darkest days ... most likely post Pagan ... and with the new blue Generation to emerge from the gloom

Whoever is Captain now will only be an interim option i believe

It's a one horse race, Lance will be captain.

Agree with both Wolfe and The Game.

Whitnall is a lay down mizarre for Captain, the only alternate possiblity is joint captaincy with Stevens.

Noe of the younger kids are ready yet...Walker, Simpson etc are still in the process of trying to establish themselves as top footballers.

Whitnall will do it for a 2 or 3 years, then one of the kids will take over as a long term option (Murphy looks the most likely at this stage).

I'd like to see Simpson get it, but at the same time would feel for Whitnall, which is why i think Whits will get it. It would be a courageous and i think positive move if they were to give it to simpson tho

I can really see walker taking the next step with the captaincy , he will already lift again next year - but i think he would boom with the captaincy

I'd like us to be rebels and not have a Captain until we make our next Grand Final

Couldnt agree more, you can see on his face how passionate he is about Carlton and he hates losing, he seems to possess the determination required to drag us out of this mess.

However unfortunatly they will give it to Lance and maybe Simmo and Stevo as vice captains

Kernahan was made Captain when he was 23!

Although it would be great to be bold and stake our claim for the future by building a team around the Captain, I don't think that we will. I think it is a race in two. The kids are too young.

Murphy is 19, Walker is 20 and Simpson is 22.

Lance has had a great year, and has batteled his demons, including his weight and speed. Stevens is a great player who has battled on with little support, but tends to dissapear when we need leadership. Lance is 26, Stevens 25.

Bloody hard choice.

But he was already firmly established as a top level player by then. Had about 4 seasons with Glenelg, and would have won the Magarey had he not been suspended (polled most votes). In his first season at Carlton, kicked 62 goals from CHF, at age 22. And yet even though he had this pedegree when he was appointed the nest season, it was still seen as being a very bold move by Walls.

As much as I would love to see a Simpson, Walker or Murphy as captain next year, I just don't think their games are anywhere near ready yet.

I agree, I was just noting Kernahan's youth when he was made Captain.

Hope it isn't Whitnall, but apart from him and Stevens I don't see anybody else really being a candidate... I'm just not sure whether giving either the captaincy would improve, or be to the detriment of their game...?

I'd give Kade Simpson a big thumbs up for vice captain though, a lot of maturity in that kid - and it would also help when it comes to retaining him when his contracts up...

3 years though, we'll see Simmo, Walker and Murph share the captaincy... :P

we haven't been know lately to have the balls to take a risk.......judging by this we will do the safe thing and give it to Lance......i dont mind that much and i do like lance.....but while our slogan on the membership is (young, exciting, passionate) thats the type of player that should lead us.

Lance might be the "safe" option option but in my opinion, he is the only option.

I think one day someone like Murphy might be captain but it's far too early at this stage. I'd rather Walker just be allowed to concentrate on his own game at this stage, remember he has only played just over 50 games. Not dismissing his captaincy credentials I just don't think he needs the added responsibility at this stage. Simpson I don't think should be captain either, again, he's still only a kid who only really established himself for good in 2006. Personally I'd rather the younger blokes concentrate on their own games at this stage.

Then you have someone like Fev who the kids love and is the best marketer of the club we have but despite all the good things he does both on and off the field he still lets himself down badly at times and this means that he should not be captain at this stage. As for Nick Stevens, I rate him as a very good player and think people are too harsh in their criticism of him but to me he's not captaincy material.

As we all know we are not brimming with viable options at this stage. Lance is certainly not perfect but he does deserve it more than anyone else at the club at the moment and so should be made captain.

Nick Stevens' name should not even be mentioned in the same breath as Red as far as the captaincy is concerned. I don't care that he gets the best tagger each week. I have never seen someone become so ineffective, worthless and inept when pressure is put on him. I would have gladly traded him to Essendon*, Kangas, Lions, Pies etc for their first round pick. Am I being too hard on him? I certainly don't think so
